Transport is fine, the question is fine.

The fact he is buying a puppy from a breeder bugs me, more then enough puppys in shelters here in the GTA that could use a good home let alone have to get one from Ottawa, but that's just me

It always depends on what breed he's getting. I got my samoyed from a breeder since you will never find one in a shelter. Normally, the breeder will take it back before you ever sell it to someone.

There is 100% no reason that anyone should ever need to buy a dog from a breeder, there are more then enough dogs located across Canada and the US that you can get whatever you want if you put a little effort in.

2 seconds of web searching and I found 100 Samoyeds avaliable for adoption:

http://www.petfinder.com/searc.....mp;zip=Toronto%2C+ON

All in the US, but just think, if I actually wanted to put a little effort in what I could find.  Again 100% no excuse to ever buy a dog from a breeder, EVER!

I have to agree on both sides of this one from my vet perspective. Every day I see disaster bred purebreds from backyard breeders that people buy thinking a purebred is better than a mutt (health wise usually not). However, I also see families who rescue dogs from pounds who were dumped there by previous owners for a reason that never is revealed on the adoption papers - whether fear biters, separation anxiety or non-obvious health issues and now the new owner who tried to do the right thing has a major unexpected problem on their hands and if kids are involved in the family, it adds even more problems to the pile.

The best way to get a dog or cat these days is either from a reputable breeder where you meet both the parents for temperment and see the kennel or a rescue group that deals either with fostering the pets first and/or breed specific foster foundations.( At least these pets come from a home situation already and behavior problems, medical etc have either been discovered and revealed or health problems dealt with.

My more than 0.02 worth. And everybody will have positive stories from the worst situations but after 21 years (Man, I'm old! ) of practicing I've seen "most" of it all. Still get surprised once in a while.

I agree that Medvet's $0.02 is worth a million.

What I don't understand is how people can adopt from an acknowledged breeder sight unseen?  As a legit breeder I would want to know my customers and have them sign papers of conduct before releasing my pups, and as a prospective dog owner, I would want to visit with my soon to be  furry-child life mate to try to assure compatibility (we've always let the pets pick us).  Or is this all done by web-cam these days? (My own 2 cents, worth only about half a cent after exchange and taxes.)

Just ask Adam if he breeds reptiles

I know that this is in jest but I feel the need to respond.

Yes I breed Reptiles, but Reptiles and not the throw away animals that dogs have become.  There is a serious over population problem with dogs, on Pet Finder alone, and this is just one site, there are currently 143,906 dogs avaliable for adoption across Canada and the US.

Now compare that number to the current 311 Reptiles up for adoption on Pet Finder and you will begin to understand the staggering diffrence.  I also don't breed the reptiles that are usually in need of adoption like Red Eared Sliders, Iguanas, Burmese Pythons, Reticulated Pythons and Anacondas.  Those animals have a much higher risk of abandoment and I will never work with those breeds for that reason.

Also as a responsible breeder I put in my paper work my phone number and email address and request that at any time if the person I'm selling my animals to is going to decide to abandon or place one of my animals in a shelter that they must contact me first and give the animal back to me, no matter how long it has been.  How many dog breeders do you know that would be willing to take in a dog 10 years later after it had been born?  I will take any animal back that I have ever bred as if I can't take care of the animals I help create then I shouldn't be breeding.

So that being said I see no problem at all with my reptile breeding, but I am completely and utterly disgusted by anyone who thinks they need to breed dogs.  With the staggering amount of dogs available for adoption there is no reason for anyone to be breeding dogs until the problem that currently exists is controlled.  As for people who say that they can't get the right dog from a shelter, then use a rescue, and you can find the right dog in a shelter it just takes time and a little effort, obviously much more effort then the instant gratification of going to the closest breeder and getting a dog, but people should be willing to show some restarint and patience and get a dog from a shelter.

My passion for animals I'd say runs almost as deep, if not deeper then my passion for pinball, to put this subject in persective a bit for people.

I got mine from a reputable breeder. met both parents and saw all the other samoyeds. Also was able to get one in Drummondville, which was on my way back from the Xmas vacation. I did search for one locally but could not find one at the time (and going as far as the US to get it, no thank you. Also, in that link, half of them were not even samoyeds).

On the other hand, I do have to agree with Vengeance on certain points, I'm sure some here in Quebec saw the show Enquete, where they showed what goes on in a Puppy Factory. Getting a puppy from these breeders is the worst thing to do since it's exactly what will keep them in business. It's just too bad a dog is still considered an object by the law in Quebec.

Yeah - sorry Adam, I was just lightening the mood.   Heck, we poured gasoline under our deck 'cause my mom saw a snake when I was a kid under the deck.   I guess humanness to animals and the environment weren't on everyone's minds back then.   Crap to this day decades later grass and weeds don't grow under there...     I don't think we were alone with the gas-under-the-deck thing either....

I hope this isn't inappropriate.  A neighbour of mine in Brampton is making arrangements to buy a puppy from a breeder in Ottawa. I have posted on U-ship for them, but was also wondering if anyone was planning a trip in the next week to come from Ottawa to the Toronto area and would be interested in making approx $100 for transporting a puppy ( in a small carrier ) as well.

Is this weird ?  It just feels wrong.   Anyway, please let me know if you are interested.

holy crap.  that's a lot of threads.

I live in Ottawa, but will be traveling to brampton to visit my father (HWY10 & 407) on easter weekend if you're interested in transportation send me a message.

I have 3 dogs myself ... so they'll all be in the car as well - not sure how that'll go over ...
