The reason I ask is becuase I have become hooked on fixing pins... but what about a pin that has a crapped out backglass and playfield? It would suck to junk a working pin just because the art is shot...
So I want to start a little survey...
I will ask the same question for 2 types of pins...
1- Regardless what pin it is, if you had an EM pin, what theme would you customize it with? Preferably a theme relative to the era of the pin if it is culture-related. I wouldn't want to see a Metallica pin when it is an EM... doesn't fit well... Led Zeppelin would fit better... Can be anything... name it.
2- Same question as above but on an SS pin. What theme would you want on a pin? Can be older, can be generic (not related to a band or movie or anything dated), can even be a new twist on an old favorite, like a new Haunted House pin. Name it.
If I ever fall upon a cheap pin with dead art, I might just go ahead and do this.
Now don't get any ideas... I am by no means ToMMy... I don't do electronics... but I am pretty good with a paintbrush and carpentry... .. and busted pins can be found easy.
I know what JD3 would say here... a Scottish pin!!! Have the backglass covered with the Scot Wall of Fame... Jackie Stewart... Sean Connery... Scotty from Star Trek... Fat Bastard!! With bagpipes playing as background music!
A zombie theme would rock. I'm really surprised no one ever made a zombie themed pin before. It would even fit on an EM, considering zombie movies have been around since the 60s.

Great movie. Very dated, but still alot of fun. When I finally got rid of the VCR, I had to go out and replace my VHS copy with a DVD The poster would make a great backglass -- talking about the cartoon poster. Love that style of poster/artwork, brings me way back.

Cannonball, while a fun movie as well, isn't nearly as good as Gumball Rally. Gumball did it first and did it right. Raul Julia as the womanizing Italian race car driver is perfect -- "Whatsa behind me isn't important".... You have the classic Ferrari vs Cobra at the end. It just doesn't get better.

That was Raul Julia?!? I saw that movie at the drive-in with my dad and I agree 100%, it was way funnier than Cannonball Run. I love the guy on the bike who keeps having problems on the road trip eheh.
DMD: I liked a hockey theme (maybe Slapshot , Transformers, Arkanoid, Asterix!
Early SS: Like Hal-9000, non-commercial sci-fi or fantasy are always a winner... or a comic book character (like Gottlieb Spiderman
EM: I don't think of a theme, but I like EM with old style art (50-60) coloful and simple art... with some backglass animation

em's would be great do a kids theme. mr. dress up, friendly giant or seame st. would be grand. but you could do newer shows and get away with just the bells and lights. education as well for the kids with leaning colurs and shapes.
just use a 80's pin named rock and do rocky horror picture show. or if new pin, use maybe a tales from the crypt and then you could have some neat stuff on the dmd.
oh course i think like others on the zombie theme. again you could use the rock pin and do a tribute to return of the living dead.
i would play the crap out of a cannonball run pin. that would be great as well. or a smokey in the bandit.
The Haunted Mansion Tron II World of Warcraft Gears of War The Time Machine The Outer Limits Fortune Teller The Illusionist DEFCON 1 Wormhole (sequel to Blackhole)
Only a DMD pin with quips from the movie would give it justice.
Forget the DMD, new pinballs should have a LCD display for showing the score in colour and with proper movie or animation clips. It would be like PB2K just toned down a bit to have a tradition display like a dmd just an LCD instead.
Only 2 themes I would like to see in pinball. As Adam said Monty Python (but I perfer Holy Grail or Life Of Brian, not Flying Circus), and the ultimate THREE STOOGES - Moe Larry and Curly with a hidden Shemp Multiball much like Peking Duck mode in Shadow.
Current Line Up: Fish Tales, Whitewater, The Simpsons Pinball Party, Lord Of The Rings, Star Trek The Next Generation, Johnny Mnemonic, The Shadow and Big Guns.

It is times like these that I wish I had electronics skills... I would then build my own pin like ToMMy. So many great ideas... I do have drawn up plans for some ideas (mostly sketches), but here are a few:
Friday the 13th (I am a huge fan). I have plans for a 3-D backglass for that one.
2001 series (2001, 2010, 2061, 3001)
Death Race (with graphics from the Exidy videogame cab)
Zombies (starring none other than Tar-Man!!!)
Sinistar, the pin!!! (Yes... but I have no skills at programming, so it would be tough). It would have a magnet in the middle of the playfield... Sinistar gets you, then, down the hatch!
This is great!!! Keep the ideas coming! It might inspire others!

When I heard the rumours last year about Stern working on getting the license for a Led Zeppelin pin, I thought it was such a great idea that I would have had no choice but to make it my first NIB. That theme is so universally appealing to multiple different generations the world over, I'm surprised it hasn't been done. It's too bad it looks like the rumours were just rumours.
Anyway, LZ gets my vote for a pin with mass appeal. Pink Floyd would totally rule as well, especially with all the different mode/toy possibilities. Both of these would need to be DMD generation to be done right, although both could easily be SS or EM - each with their own distinctive artwork from their respective eras.
Currently Ownin' The Addams Family Terminator 2 The Getaway WWF Royal Rumble (Yea! Yea! Ohhh yea!) Black Knight -New/Project Gorgar -New/Project Strange World King of Kong Themed MAME Cab Chexx Bubble Hockey

Led who?
A lot of these bands are past there best before due date to be commercially viable. Sad fact is a Hanna Montana or Hillary Duff pin will probably sell more to the broader commercial market (not us cool pinheads) and that is what the big heads at Stern look at. They don't care how cool it would be.
Continue where Stern left off and do a Jeopardy pin

I second the Led Zeppelin pin, I too was hoping Stern would actually do one.
And while they should have been giving credit where it was due. Zeppelin sold millions of records based on the way they played those tunes, very few have heard or cares about the original versions of those songs. I guess other than people who search you-tube in an attempt to discredit things based on their own dislike for something.
After all music is all about taste, what one dislikes another may love.
As for the Hannah Montana comment, how many 6-12 year old girls do you see playing pinball? Zeppelin is outdated? In less than two months Page/Plant's No Quarter sold 1 million records in 2004-05. And they are collectively the 3rd highest sellers in the US with 106 million sold.

Agreed. Although, I thought that the ships in Mars Trek looked a lot like the ships in the original BSG. Plus, the ship on the spinners looked like the ship from Futurama.

Exactly. At any rate I didn't say I didn't like to listen to Led Zeppelin if you read the post. That fact was irrelevant to the point. The point was regarding the merit in investing $1 million in developing a game after an old band. With that many records still sold it may be viable.
Looks like licensing would be a b**** though. You would have to pay a long list of writers.

!???!?!
it's about Zep being arrogant pompus greedy bastards depriving the original authors the money they are due.
Guess how much Jimi Hendrix estate collects in mechanical royalties? i use Jimi as example since those were the figures i read in 2004..... It's on the average between 1 and 3 million per hit song, each and every year. let me repeat that. each and every year, big hits like "all along the watch tower" and "purple haze" bring in a couple million EACH AND EVERY YEAR. PER SONG... that's for the radio play, liscencing for films,tv, commercials and all the cover versions of the tune. the author rights is about 3-5%. So, lets use a mid figure of 2 million... the song author is entitled to 66K...
now for sake of argument and to over simplify inflation, change in royalty rates, some years better than others, etc... let's put that 66K figure from 2004 down to 7K..
7K X 36 years since 1972 == $252K
That is some serious chunk of change Zep decided to put in their own pockets and not the song writer.
Zep wasn't the first, nor the last... Even Celine Dion tries to f.oqk song writers over from their full mechanical royalties.
If you were one of those uncredited artists, would you just chuckle it off? hell, just from 2004 to 2008: it's 4 years X 66K = $264K.. it wouldn't bother you that souless, wankers pocket 8 million (because of something you created) and they throw salt on the wound by keeping the $264K that is rightful yours?

All the Along the Watchtower was written by Bob Dylan and covered by Hendrix, so that's not a great example.
I wrote Zeppelin should have given credit where it was due ie. royalties, so I'm not really disagreeing with you.
Anyway, this is getting off topic. I'd still like to see a Zeppelin pin regardless of whether they are/were pompous greedy bastards.

If we're talking about a music themed pin then my vote would be for the Headstones. I saw them a few times while they were still together. Dollar for dollar, one of the best shows I've ever seen.
you know what I'd LOVE to see... is a "giant robot in space" theme.. you could make the pinballs his eyeballs, and when you lock them into his sockets you get multi-ball! And! And the flippers could be his fingers!! Sweet action.. and you could call this magical machine "Robo*Pin" or something.
... oh, and don't forget to make it drain like a dirty whore!!

The possibilities are endless for a custom DIY rethemed pin. It just really depends on your own personal taste.
Cartoon or comic book characters are a great choice if you are looking for a friendly/family themed machine. Anime could be cool with or without the tentacles. Old favorite TV shows from your childhood. Your favorite movie. Zombies like a number of people have already mentioned. A generic halloween or haunted house theme, ghost and ghouls. Your favorite band or singer. Your favorite muscle car. Super models. Greek Mythology. Sci-fi or horror.
Here is a list of custom pins I have found while surfing the web, enjoy.
Although doing a conversion would be rewarding enough, it might be a good idea to have a buyer lined up, perhaps even doing a conversion of their own choosing ( within limits of course ). The fact that you are being paid for the 100s of hours you will spend on the machine ( albeit, probably less than minimuim wage ! ) would get you through those rough patches where you just want to torch the thing cuz it's not working out.

I dissagree. Do it for yourself... you end up more motivated then. If you do it for someone else, be ready to deal with a lot of pressure.
Although it has been mentioned in a past thread I would like to see a "The Munsters" pin, done right and in color. Addams Family was released in 1993 and I think there's room for another pin with this type of theme.

I ' m not a Michael Jackson fan , far from it , but i like the idea of a zombie theme . So , "THRILLER" in EM ...

What about a homemade "MAACA" machine. It could have artwork that included pic of a person helping another, a pic of a lowballer with horns,a couple of handshake pics, pics of guys almost busting there guts lifting stuff, pic of a guy trying to stuff 5 pins in a volkswagen rabbit( on the roof and the hood as well) a couple of broken beer bottles incorporated into the playfield, pic's of people tearing their hair out, and maybe even about to take a sledge to a machine, and why not an artists rendition of the auctioneer from starburst as well. The soundtrack could play ac/dc ' s shoot to thrill.

I think it would be great to make a old school pin with modern play. IE the graphics and sounds are all classic; the play is more modern and fast. With some old school touches such as star roll overs, and spinners which I feel do not get used enough. I think that the classic art combined with the modern elements would make for a great playing and super cool looking game. That is if someone is artistic enough to make the art representative of a new game but with the graphics with old school flavour.
As for the theme...perhaps a few "pin up" girls, with a motor bike, classic roadster, drive-in diner pop bumbers, drive-in movie multiball, big brawl super multiball, Roller Rink mini playfield, jukebox for locking a ball, a drag race ramp, captured ball hit gets you off work! There are propably many more 50's type things I am missing, but make it generic, not after a movie, or show, just the era and if all goes right it should be great fun.
Current Lineup: Black Knight, Riverboat Gambler, Ripley's Believe it or Not, Flintstones, Orbitor 1, Wipe Out, Breakshot, The Simpsons Pinball Party, Fish Tales, Eight Ball and a 60 in 1 Cocktail.
How about an "Army of Darkness" pinball machine. The movie poster could be the back glass and there is a series of graphic novels (comic books) to use as the play field graphics.
It has a number of one liners to use as triggered sounds, groovy

At one point i was cosidering redoing my "mars Trek" to a really simple "evil dead" conversion... AOD would be much better, but i figured since Mars trek has the "spell mars trek" bonus, i could just change out the letters!

Another neat idea for a pin would be "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" based off the old 70's television series. It was the inspiration for the x-files tv series and would be a cool companion pin to an x-files pin.
There is currently a graphic novel/comic book version available that could be used as material for the play field graphics.
Seeing it is an older show an EM pin would be a good choice. There was even an episode that was based in an arcade when a pinball player was killed under strange circumstances.

I would love to see the Prisoner as a pin! It was a great series from the 60's, kinda weird at times but overall very thought provoking. A remake has been made for British TV which will be aired this fall. Check out the remake "preview" from Comic -Con.
Yes, Patrick McGoohan was exceptional. I enjoyed his work in the Prisoner, Secret Agent Man and the Danger Man series. He was great as Longshanks in Braveheart - just the right amount of meanness. For those of you who don't know him, he was also supposed to be the original James Bond but turned it down because he did not like the "philosophy' behind Bond; guns and women, hmm, now what is wrong with that? OK, that is probably more trivia than most people should know.
