Looks like a fun event, I hope I can make it out.

Canadian Pinball Championship but only in Toronto?? Hmm - I'd be tempted to fly out just to represent the West but the cost of flight, etc not really worth it. I'm pretty sure I'd kick everyone's a** but oh well.
I guess I'll let it be but they should change the name to Toronto Pinball Championship IMHO

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
AWWW dude that is some A material, wow I got tears running down my cheeks that's so funny!
But on a serious note, a number of people from Vancouver are heading to Pittsburg right now to represent Western Canada, I'm sure those same people will make the trip to Toronto, so I don't think the west will need your repersentation, !!
What can we expect to be auctioned? Older Williams games from the 90s, or the newer Stern games?

I would expect it to be video games primarily. There will be pins but the Starburst auctions usually have a couple of old system 11's and a bunch of Star Wars Episode 1's. This is a Starburst auction with extra games from the Funland arcade that just closed in downtown TO.
I expect pins to be auctioned at a pinball championship! And good ones too!

Nah... I will just cut the sleeves off and then cut the sides open all the way down from the sleeves, and use it as my t-shirt when I enter the ring. The wrestling fans will love it. It will go great with my finishing move... the piledriver from the third rope, right on my opponent's head to scramble his brains. I call it the Incomplete Code.
i am for sure, so is one of my tattooist and then one of our customers as well. i think i will hit it up most evenings after i leave the shop really early. book things for early mornings only and take the sunday off for sure as well. but really hope to meet up with most of you guys for this. aution will be ok but i don't really need more vids... i am about to sell off a couple more as it is.
i do have a few pins to pratice on. but really can't wait for the next three to be over with. then the shop will be over filled almost. if your in the area and want to pratice on something different then your own games.... come on in for all the free games you can handle.
also some other good news for all you guys. the Church St FETISH FAIR is on the same weekend (all day sunday). forget the auction sparky. i can see you in a pair of leather assless chaps.

OK... so who is goign, and how are you arranging your stay? Hotel? Member's place?
Necro has gratiously offered to have me over (thanks Glen!) but I hate to impose. Plus, I remembered he had dogs but any cats? I am deadly allergic... Did I also say I hate to impose?
But I would not feel as bad if you let me buy pizza for you and members that would come along as well (impromptu meeting? ).
So... any of you... how are you planning it? I wouldn't mind visiting other TO members at the same time...
My house is also open to anyone who needs a place to stay. TwilightZone already has booked the spare bedroom and Eden Stamm of the VRPA has first dibs on one of the couches. So that leaves one more couch and a whole lot of floor space that people are more then welcome to.
I have 2 dogs so if you are alergic, bring some medication.

2 Non shedding dogs. No cats. I am allergic to both cats and dogs but cats worst of all. Red eyes, irritated... you know similar to the reaction when I am forced to play a Stern.
I kind have gotten de-sensitized to my dogs, they get bathed frequently and are always shaved.
I'm able to offer my couch and floor if anyone needs a place to lay their head. I'm about 20 minutes from the tournament location.
The only pet we have is a goldfish, and he's a heavy sleeper. Don't worry about imposing. Please feel welcome to accept my offer.
Secondly, if the tournament does end at 6pm on Saturday I'm planning to have a mini-meeting at my house where we can enjoy some food and drinks and play more pinball!
Say 'yes' to classic Sterns. Complete MAACA-Wacko!

Anyone heading to Toronto from Ottawa for the tournament that wants to earn some $ delivering an old machine to the GTA? If so, please let me know. With gas prices the way they are, this might be a win-win situation.
we will be going back and forth from peterborough every day for this. we have me and our tattooist for sure. also one of my friends chris is coming. don't know if erin and eve are coming. it would be nice. eve, my 19month old. loves tales from the crypt and plays now with both flippers. was thinking of entering her just for the fun of it and a t-shirt for her (to grow into).

hope to see loads of ya's there.
Damn... if your tattooist is there, he can't ink me... next time.
I could probably put somebody up here in the Hamilton area as well. I live about 35 minutes from the location of the event.... as long as you don't mind a deaf, dumb, dog who doesn't go by the name of Tommy.
Actually he's not that dumb... just drives me crazy sometimes.
Wow, that's awsome to hear, I really hope this turns out much better then I expect. If we get 100 people to show up to this event that would be absolutley frikin amazing!!

I am coming from Vancouver for the tournament. I can hardly wait! I am a tourny first-timer.
This is great... Hey... anyone interested in a meet-and-greet at any local bar or restaurant in the vicinity of the tournament? Friday night or Saturday night? That would be frickin awesome. Any good bars close by?
Due to... unfortunate circumstances, I will probably not be attending the pinball championship, even though I paid for an entry. I simply no longer can afford it, unless playfield jobs come in, which they are not.
If any of you were planning to bring me a playfield, please PM me. I will see what I can do. If I get 5 or more pf jobs, then I will attend.

Well, looks like I stand corrected. Due to an overwhelming response to the clearcoating service, looks like I will be attending the Pinball Championship. So if anyone wants a clearcoat job done, I will even come down with my van (with a newer engine...). So THAT means that if anyone wants a game brought down to TO from my place, I can do so. I can fit 1 pin no prob, 2 if standard pins with the heads removed. I will do it for 50$. It will help pay the gas, and the clearcoat jobs should pay a fleabag motel room for 2 nights.
Anyone ever been to the Days Inn in Mississauga near the airport? 79$ a night... not bad. There is also a Comfort Inn at 66$, but the reviews are less than stellar (old, cases of bed bugs, no hot water, etc...). Looks to be a 5 minute drive from the tournament.
I am also considering the offers to stay over at a member's place, but if I decide to go out late with other members, it will be a bit awkward if I come in late and everyone is sleeping...
Also... anything organized for a MAACA-members party or something?
Anything near the airport will be pricey for sure, but if you organize enough people going you could probably get a group rate. Other than that, there are a bunch of motels down at Park Lawn & Lakeshore that aren't too bad, and would probably be cheaper. They're about 15 mins away from the Playdium Store (and right across from where I work! )

Ok... it looks like I've been given the green light (...by my wife...) to attend the show.
However my stay is limited as I have to be home (Ottawa) by Saturday night.
My plan is to drive to T.O. on Friday, drop by the Playdium on Friday afternoon/supper, attend the auction on Saturday, and head back home around 1-2pm Saturday afternoon.
[ NB. For all those waiting on me for game delivery to from Ott-Peterborough-Hamtilton-Kingston-Ottawa, see my soon-to-be-posted thread coming up shortly.. ]
But for now, my questions are :
1- Will I be able to play some pinball at the Playdium on Friday night, even if I don't plan on participating in the tournament Sat and Sunday ?
2- If so, do I still need to register and pay $25 ? (...or is there a "cheaper" option for Friday playing only ? [practice maybe ? ] ) I just want to try out the new Sterns...
3- Is anyone else going on Friday, or is everyone only going on Sat-Sun ?
3A- Is there any plans to have MAACA gathering on Friday night ? (either before of after playing some pin on at the Playdium )
1) I can't really comment, one thing I do know for sure is that you will not be able to play on the qualifying bank of games unless your are qualifying. I think I remeber saying that they would have machines around for people to just play, but don't quote me on it.
2) If you don't want to participate in the Tournament then you don't need to pay the $25, but you can still spectate.
3) What do you mean by anything else? First day of qualifying is the Friday, I'll be there Friday to qualify, I like to get an early start on these things.
3A) I can't help organize anything for a Friday night as I have to pickup Eden of the VRPA from the airport at 1am but I'm up for hosting a MAACA event on the Saturday after qualifying if anyone is interestead. I figure I've already got 1 MAACA member and a VRPA member at my house might as well host the event there.

I was thinking a few MAACA members could come by my place for a small get together that Friday night if they'd like. I live about 35 minutes away via the HWY.
If we went up to Adam & Denise's on Saturday, it be just like a pinball triple header! I'd also be in for a Keswick visit on Saturday night.
Just a thought. PM me if you'd be in for that idea ( Friday night ) so I can get a estimate on numbers.... man, this is going to be alot of pinball!
was thinking of entering eve. she is now 20months and useing both flippers on her own. what are the rules for the kids like? will i be able to hold her up and let her play? if so i might register her as well. know there isn't any kids t's but she can get a extra one for her pa....

The kids tournament is free, there is no pre-registration required. Don't quote me but I believe the kids tournament is for kids up to 15 years of age. I can't imagine anyone would have a problem with you holding her and letting her play for fun.

I'm registered. Spousal permission and transport depending, I may be up to Friday night at Bally Boy's and possibly Saturday at Vengeance'.
I'll likely try to qualify on Friday (and again on Saturday if I don't make the cut or for the auction, maybe). Sunday's the Tourney. Should be interesting to see both the MAACA and TOPL faces, and some Vancouver people. Anyone else in?
I discovered at Jim's (Jvegas) that I really like WPT, so if anyone wants to take bribes to throw the competition, I have oodles and oodles of Pachislo tokens....
Is there enough time to qualify on Friday after work if your there for a couple of hours up until the 8pm cut off? I am assuming other than the practice time given everything can be completed for qualifying on Saturday.
Yea you should be good with just the Saturday, it will just depend on how busy it is.
I plan to be there the Friday and Saturday. I'm sure the Friday during the day will be dead which is perfect cause then I can bang out quite a few entries till I find one I'm happy with.

I don't get the qualifying (no package rec'd yet), wouldn't you have to wait until you get bumped to requalify? Otherwise that gives an unfair advantage to those with bigger wallets. Or maybe I don't understand it.

Yeah I thought you had to submit your score from 1 play, no matter how bad? Or was it best of 3 plays? Regardless, I don't think you can keep playing 'till you get a score you're happy with submitting.

You can qualify as much as you want, as long as you pay the $5
Quoted from the Starburst page:
"Players who are unsatisfied with their initial qualifying performance may purchase additional qualification rounds at the cost of $5. Each player's best entry will determine their seeding. Each entry is seperate (no mixing of scores between entries). "
That is the way every tournament is run that you'll ever attend.
Typical, ?? Having lots of money to spend doesn't mean that you are going to automatically make it into the finals. The really good players are able to make it into qualifying on a single entry. But stuff happens you can have a bad ball or a bad game, and do you honestly think someone would travel for 5 - 10 hours away so they can play one qualifying attempt and if they don't get in they go home??
If you want to play a game where randomness rules and the level of skill you posses means nothing, go play the lottery. If you don't like that the better players are able to play more and qualify, then get better.
I think I've already asked this question, but I want to be sure I understood the answer...
For those of us who won't be signing-up for the tournament (...because I'm only there Friday night and Saturday morning ...), will there be some machines to play ? ( or pay $5 to "practice" or something ... )
I'm taking the glass of for my qualifying attempts. Um, it helps me see the spin on the ball better. I also like to put my beer between the flippers - don't worry, I'll drink cans, not bottles - I'm not an idiot you know.
Have: Twilight Zone Looking for: Reactor Superman Pong NineBall Drag Race Defender Attack From Mars Stargate Robotron Galaga PacMan Centipede SpaceWar Computer Space
There should be from my understanding, I can't be 100% sure as Playdium keeps changing things up on us to suit their own ideas, but my understanding is there is supposed to be machines or free play around the place that arn't going to be used in the tournament.

Sorry you hit a nerve
I understand your deisre to have a chance at winning but don't see why you would want to remove the skill involved, to me that would make the victory seem pretty hollow.
Also I'm pretty pissed off with Starburst anyway, they've changed the format of the tournament to remove some of the skill which has really gotten me pissed off about the tournament. Really as far as I can tell this tournament is going to be a joke and if it wern't for the prospect of winning the WPT I wouldn't even be going.
I am just going to see some of da boyz and play some pinball. Looking forward to Friday night at BallyBoy's and Saturday night at Adam's. The clearcoat jobs I am picking up are a nice incentive too! But for me, the tournament is somewhat trivial.
Pinball is fun and all, but like all collectors know, it is only REALLY fun when playing with some buddies. Give me a cold beer, some snacks, a couple of pins and vids and great company, for me, that is hard to beat.

Yeah, with the auction and the tournament going on there the same day, I'm not sure where everybody is going to even stand. The new location is large but I'm not sure where everyone is going to gather, park, etc... plus how are they going to display all those auction games?????
, but after talking with Peter Davis in person and have to persude him from all the stupid ideas he has come up with, I'm really not suprised he pulled this moronic idea out of his a$$.
So I guess he didn't go for the "pants-optional" part of the tournament?

"no 2 games score close enough that you could add the points togethor and get an accurate represenation of how well that player played"
I'm no physics professor, but I will play devil's advocate, it seems to me that if everyone is playing the same games, then if the scores were close, those who played both gamest best would come out on top. Sure, if you screw up on the game that doles out higher scores, tough beans.
And having two separate ladders ensures that there's an "everyman" chance at the grand prize, but the top prize ($1000) still goes to the top person in the 'A' division.
Do not fear the randomness of the silver ball... embrace it, because no man can ever be the master of all things, but everyman has the potential to score a 'Special' and win the hearts of the pinball crowd.
I'm there to see the action, say hi to some folks, to take my kid, to support the pinball cause. I hope we get to play WPT, it has a high degree of randomness as far as I could tell.
This isn't a change but has really bugged me from the start is the random selection of 2 people, 1 to qualify in A and one to Qualify in B. That to me removes all legitimacy of the tournament.
Actually Adam to make it worse it's two random people into each group (28 qualify through score 4 qualify by random act)

I have to agree with Adam here .. taking the total from two games and adding them together is crazy. In the stern world play a game of RCT (or monopoly) and one of Family Guy and add the scores together doesn't matter what you score on the RCT the family guy score will dominate your outcome. Of course this is showing the extreme scoring differences but none the less I don't see any advantage to doing it and lots of problems.

Again, to play devil's advocate, I guess it's just a fun family tournament event with a nice prize for some pinball lover. I would advise anyone who really disagrees with the rules to boycott!
What I don't quite understand is this bit: "The final round consists of one or more 5-game matches. In each match, a player’s 5 game scores are added to determine his or her total score. The player with the higher total score wins the match. The winner of division “A” will need to win one match to win the final round, while the winner of division “B” needs to win two matches. All games are played on the same machine for the entire final round. The winner of division “A” will pick both the machine and the order of play. "
Pretty much gives a clear advantage to the A Division Winner, the B Division challenger for the Grand Prize would have to work hard - win first match (to stay alive) and then 2nd (to win) assuming that a "tie" isn't possible since any win by the A Div Winner takes the Grand Prize. So the final play off round would be a maximum of two matches (10 games). Sore fingers by the end of it all here.
THe more we talk about it here, the less fun it is all starting to sound....

Oh, ok, I get it. Yes, I can see where adding scores vs wins could set people off. But I assume it's their contest, they won't change the rules now without getting even more complaints.
I let him know I disagree with the way he is running the tournament and that I have some concerns about what he is going to be doing.
But what I've come away with is that I'm willing to give it a shot, I may not agree, I may not like it but end of the day it's not my tournament. I told him I'm angry and don't like they way it was handled but I'll give it a shot and hopefully Starburst will learn something from this and take it forward and make changes.
It's the first tournament, my concern has allways been that this tournament is a well run tournament and it helps foster competitive pinball in Canada.
With that we'll see how it goes, look forward to seeing everyone there.
You should have called me... that is my official sideline after pin renos... house renos.
Life is like Pinball!! You never know where you will bounce or where your going but sometimes you have that one amazing shot But on the other hand you have those darn gutter ball where you just get frustrated.

Damn, damn, damn - my kid's given me the nasty cold/flu thing that is going around here! My spouse has been laid up for a week and I'm just coming down with it. Likely I'll have to bow out of Friday evening Dan! and play the rest of the weekend by ear! If there, I too will be donning my MAACA best.
So... since this will be my first SB auction, should I be excited, or will 99% of the stuff get shilled? I might fork out a bit of cash for the right old vid or really beat-up old pin... who knows.
...And just for the record, I will be leaving my place around 9am and take my sweet-a** time to get there for 2pm. I am bringing all the MAACA t-shirts... Championship special... 12$ per shirt, 20$ for 2. Pretty much at cost! Get em while you can!!!

The OCC game is really cool. They had it set up a couple of months ago when we were there and it's the only game my five year old wanted to play. When we were leaving she was telling me all about it. "You have to build a motorcycle and you're trying to get to Vegas...I didn't get there but almost" Supposedly it never went to production because the boys wanted too much in royalty fees.
the new IJ and Dark Knight. They were having some major problems with the coin mechs on all of them (didn't have them set for tokens properly I guess). They were also very understaffed as they weren't expecting so many people today. Very friendly though..
Oh and the "free pinball gift" for pre-registers is a pin keychain (like you get when you buy a machine). I got a TSPP one and a saw with the word "bone" on it. ?

The OCC game is really cool. They had it set up a couple of months ago when we were there and it's the only game my five year old wanted to play. When we were leaving she was telling me all about it. "You have to build a motorcycle and you're trying to get to Vegas...I didn't get there but almost" Supposedly it never went to production because the boys wanted too much in royalty fees.

having big problems with my computer. gorydeath here. had to reregister. its my computer not the site. even this way i am having problems. glad a have a couple new computers on the way for the house. that and i hope to pick up something when i get my butt up there. didn't make it today due to biz coming into the shop. tattooist wasn't booked for today (he is coming with me) and then a full day piece walks in. so we were going to go later. hit the road and just traffic. really thought about still going up. but it would have been a long drive and maybe only around a hour to play even. so we are hoping to leave early morning. shoot, maybe as early as bish and mcmean....
MIND OVER MATTER BODY ADORNMENT mom for short. i can't even do pm's with this account due to i can't validated my account. due to my computer problems with email account. this computer was given to me quite awhile ago. just sat for years due to my other computer had everything. well that one died. so now i have this till new ones come in. this one has no real protection or anything like that. things get worse every day with it as well. so hope to post alittle here and there. but can't send out any messages, emails or pm's. yikes.....

I'm so jealous, watching this from the sidelines (via MAACA), coughing my guts out between sleeping and chills/fever. Good luck to you all, great to see lots of MAACA and TOPL names on the list! Just wish I could get my T-Shirt for the $25 I plunked down for the entry.

You might want to call them and get your entry fee back. They were easy to deal with. Mind you I called them before the tournament started, I think Wednesday.
gorydeath here. i really had a blast today. batman kicked my butt when it counted. i did ok on it on one round. but when i had a great Indiana Jones score i didn't get a very good batman score. still puts me in A division to get my butt kicked around. i am so frigging tied. but not feeling as sick. hope i didn't make anyone else alittle ill. ended up buying things at the auction. yep. no room in the shop. but i am taking out some of the tattoo cabnets. have a couple cool kids rides going in for eve. i got a new touch screen and the coin sorter from funland arcade. i did really try for the old neon sign. but i knew i had other things i wanted.
also congrats to others who played excellent today. sparkys on the board and i know others are as well. i forget all who i ran into. i am going off to bed after i find out what time i should be there and such. hope i didn't miss out on too much at the end of the day. did last till 5:30.
Had a fantastic time, good to meet some new people. My DarkKNight score seems to have vanished (they gave me an even million in lieu of my real score) but a few more million certainly wouldn't have put me even 1/2 way to a berth. Got what I came for... my new shirt! Good luck tomorrow to all! Daniel
I'm in Toronto on an unrelated note, looks like I'm at a hotel just 2 km away so a good opportunity to pop by and wish our members luck tomorrow. Good luck all!
Whole thing ended about an hour ago. It was really starting to run into overtime in the end. Results should be posted at some point as well as some pics. Eden Stamm took it in the end but there were some interesting moments where it could have gone otherwise.
Well, considering I rarely play, I think I didn't do so bad. I got into the second round and got beat by Necro by a hair. But man was I tired. I had to stop halfway home for a 15min catnap.
First off, my list of thanks:
Adam and Denise, for being the awesome hosts that they were!!!!
Pinball Addict (Mike)... thanks for the help on the pins!!!
Squid Vicious (Dan), for bailing me out BIG TIME!!!!! Man, do I owe you HUGE!!!
Dan and LeeAnn for also being awesome hosts!!!! Had a great time Friday!!!
I had a lot of high points on this weekend...
Meeting Gary Stern... way cool.
Meeting FINALLY the TO gang. It was really awesome to hang out with you guys!
Meeting Eden Stamm... probably the nicest guy I ever met in pinball, and the best player I have ever seen...
Friday night at Dan's ... playing Silverball, Playboy, CF and EK was awesome!!!!
And I could go on and on... but time for bed. I am toast...
yep. it was great. i never done anything like that before in my life.
made it to the finals with a great score on IJ yestarday. it had my hands shaking by the end of it. couldn't do anything with batman... wild card paul took me out....
auction was busy busy busy... silly people paying way to much for some items. while other things didn't even get a opening bid. yes opening bid. most things had one. it did kind of help and speed things up. something like 200 items. i did end up with something from FUN LAND arcade. it was their old coin sorter. i did try for the arcade neon sign, cashier sign, drop safe and weight scale but didn't win. did also come back with a new touch screen and two new kids rides. will post pics later. big big. new location is great for loading. loading docks are great and the guys move everthing for you. loaded it all right on the truck.
did lots of driving back and forth. missed having the shop really open for a day and missed my little lady going potty for her first time. by herself even (20months). she wouldn't do it for me later. but its a start. erin and eve were still too sick to make it out. i got healthy fast being out. hope i didn't pass anything off (except to paul).
did great on some of the other machines that were kicking around. watch another player play WOF and he put up a killer score of 178 000 000 (something something) and got his name up as grand champ. he was a pro in my books. i was playing WPT and put up a great score on that(3rd place). the pro went to another machine and i jumped on WPT. i put up a 310 000 000 (something something) to get my name on grand champion. then ask the pro to take a pic of me with the score. wasn't to be rude. just so many machines i never played or seen. was so happy to play well in front of others.
good news is my wife said i should get proper i.d. and maybe do one of the others. and yes she wants me to come back even.
Edem Stamm ended up playing off Michael Higginson the B Division champ for the WPT.
I know the finals were Eden vs Zeus for A and Micheal vs me for B Div. Paul (pinstocker) was 4th in B and I don't know who the rest were off the top of my head.
The playoff for the WPT was best of 5 and on the first round there was almost an upset. When I was chatting with Len Keywood and Gary Stern they were discussing negotiating with Edem and Micheal so it would not have to go another 5 rounder at around 8pm.
It was quickly going from pinball tournament to pinball marathon.
Popped in on Sunday, was in town due to my daughters modeling course graduation/gala. What a bonus, me and the daughters boyfriend got to play pins and vids for free while she was doing her course thing.
Playdium: Cool place! Gary Stern: Cool guy and approachable, didn't chat with him but was nice to shake his hand. Whether or not one likes Stern pins, the fact is he's the only dude making them, so here's hoping he doesn't get sick of the hobby. Tournament: Obviously Sunday being the playoffs, it wasn't as busy as I assumed Saturday was. Still, very cool, really got into one of Sparky's match (was it the Necro match? if so Necro, that was me standing behind the two of you, GREAT FRIGGIN MATCH!!!).

I sense a little defensiveness in the crowd. Dropped into Playdium Store to pick up my Championship Stern T-shirt and participants package today - little consolation for having to miss it all!
Yeah, typical media. I've listened to the first 5 seconds of that clip twenty times, any each time I hear her say 'plays a bean pinball' for the lyrics to Pinball Wizard. Anyone else hear that or am I on drugs?
What a putz... I hate judgmental pricks like that. He thinks he is just hot mess because he is a second-rate reporter on Vancouver'S 5th network. Weird Al Yankovic does a better job on UHF...
On a more serious side, why does this guy bash Eden for owning pinballs? You know what? My wife HATES pinball, but she loves the fact that it keeps me home instead of getting hammered at a local bar, or just leaving with buddies every evening. It is a hobby, just like playing consoles, or painting, or collecting stamps, or playing a musical instrument.
And instead of laughing at Eden for the ''pinball is a sport'' comment, he should reflect on what Eden said... if there is poker and darts on TV, why not pinball? True reflection.
And on a personal note, they seem to paint Eden as a pinball-version of the comic-book guy on the Simpsons. I met Eden, and had a chance to chat with him. A truly nice and very intelligent man. So what if he delivers pizza. If he makes a good living, and he loves his job, compared to a guy who is successful but miserable, I rather be like Eden.
