... And to say that for years, people called me crazy. when I started collecting, I stuck with the classic SS pins. I did dabble in DMDs a bit but not long at all. For years I have been faithful to what I call the best period pinball EVER had. People called me crazy for collecting those old relics.
Hmm...
Along comes 2010... and we have a pseudo-battle going on right now on who can have the best classic SS collection.
Redketchup decided to ditch his DMDs, and now has Fathom, Dolly Parton, Centaur, Eight Ball Deluxe, Medusa and Black Hole.
Azatotht also ditched his DMDs including TZ and IJ, and now has Solar Fire, Medusa, Flash Gordon and elektra.
Mrhide converted a while back and has Pharaoh (frickin rocks...), Spirit, Black Knight and Devil's Dare.
YES! Tglover is a crackhead! Complete MAACA-Wacko!

I must say that I was predominantly a DMD collector as well, until I had the chance to visit the Cooke household. Between the simple charm of Lectronamo and the intensity of Lightning I was hooked, and thus began my quest for classic 80's games. Within a year I've picked up Lightning, Big Game, Orbitor 1, Star Light and 4x Star Gazers (which I now only have one of). (and I've also bought and sold a Black Knight and a pair of Sea Witch's)
Gotta agree with ya Sparky, there is something to be said about the classics. (although I would never give up my DMD's...)
D
PS. Do I blame Cooke for all of this? HELL YEAH I DO! Damn you Cooke!
I start collecting pins because It's fit with my jukes collection... so I start with EM gottlieb (big brave and surfer) and after a couple years with this two EM, I realized that I play my pins more then at tought. EM are good but little too slow and not much to do for me.
So I take the big step and bought two DMD machine (Jurassic Park and Tommy). And then realized that I didn't enjoy much because It's too complicated (i know because I'm a french canadien in quebec, probably a bingo game will be too complicated...). I don't like to watch the DMD and have a tons of thing to do when I play. I just want to relax and play, I don't want to think about what I do.
And then Phil sold me is Medusa and a found it look awesome and is a blast to play. Not too complicated, but with something to do and I really enjoy it.
And the day that change my life... I got this awesome deal for my centaur. This game has everything that I like, multiball, sound, drop traget and for me I really enjoy the art package.
After that the disease grow in me with my EBD, BH, and now my Fathom that I didn't play much because I'm too excited with the playfield swap... I'm pretty sure I will like it like my Centaur.
Have good day, time to go back to work if I want to buy more some 80" pins

I agree with the appeal of the great SS machines of the early 80's. That was a time that pinball makers really were battling for a piece of the huge cash flow going to the video games. Designs needed to be really good to draw away the video game arcade dollars to the "old fashioned" pinball machines.
I do love DMD games, the deeper the rules the better. I have TZ, HSII, TSPP all "A" listers, but also BSD, Dr Who, SWE1. A bit of everything.
However I will always have an early SS presence in my collection...currently Centaur II, Barracora, BK. I get every bit of enjoyment from those games and they are a lot less complicated for when I just wanna play pinball, not think too hard.
Now, if I could just get one primo EM wedge head...Top Card??
I've never *had* a DMD machine. I like my 80's machines thankyouverymuch. (ok, I do have one from 1978, but it's my first pin, so nyah!)
Every machine I have I remember playing in the arcades back in the day & hold fond memories. I hung out there when there were walls of pin machines. (Mmmmm...)
80's rock!
High Speed Flash Gordon Pinbot Gorgar Kick Off Roller Disco Dungeons & Dragons Black Knight (Project) Atlantis (Bally)
I sold my TZ and bought a Seawitch instead...and keep in mind I only have room for 1 pin. It was tons of fun! However, as a 1 pin house, I needed something with a little more to shoot at...So, I went back to DMD (WCS94)
However, Seawitch and a Banjo would have been a good combo

You should see what your old Seawitch looks like now. I am finishing it up tonight.
It'd be a lot cooler if you did........ MAACA-Colonel

Well I'll be heading down the DMD path soon, (after a recent system 11 spurt), but i'm still keeping the early SS collection. Hopefully even adding to it, (come on Centaur!!!).
