The one time of the year when my attention gets a bit diverted from buying more Pins...any predictions out there?? I'm sure there are lots of Habs fans among this group who can't wait to get things started. My beloved Flames drew the Sharks so they're in tough. BTW Pins only..if they get to round 3 I'm coming out for a couple of games..already have the ticket request in! As for the Sens...hopefully Pittsburgh will do them in quick..I say 5 games..maybe even 4.
Cup prediction???? Penguins vs. my heart (Flames)...result Flames in 7!!!!!

I'm a huge hockey fan myself. I am looking so forward to this year's playoffs. You know, I actually find the first round super exciting, with all 8 games going on...it's awesome.
The western conference will be interesting. I think Nashville fully healthy would put the wings at major risk to get eliminated, but with many key players out, I think the wings will win in 5. I think SJ will beat calgary in 5, I think Minn will beat Col in 7, and I think Ana will beat Dal in 7. Should be a great western conference matchup.

Calgary in 7 over San Jose (yes Jim...Thornton has the reputation of slacking during playoffs.)
Colorado in 7 over Minnesota
Dallas in 6 over Anaheim (yup... you read right...)
My big disappointment this year is the Sens... I honestly wished that they didn't make the playoffs. Now, they will continue with the bunch of prima-donnas that they have. It makes no sense what happened to them with the talent that they have... no excuse. If I were a season ticket holder, I would give them up.
And 2008's cinderella team will be Colorado... watch out... and I don't even like Theodore...
Cup prediction...
Habs VS Detroit... #1 vs #1... Detroit in 6... sorry... I am a Habs-fan, but for a team to do so well in the much-tougher Western conference, it's hard to vote for any Eastern team...

Hey... they have a solid team overall, and an excellent coach. Goalies are good too. Hasek is old, but seems to still deliver, and Osgood seems to have risen from the ashes.
Zetterberg and Datsyuk in front... Lidstrom (the king) and Rafalski on defence, and lets not forget their secret weapon... Aaron Downey!!
I still say GO HABS though...

PS: Rocket Richard was the greatest... Gordie Howe was nothing but an elbowing thug!!!
... and sorry... I will NEVER go to Detroit... I know people that work there and they were not so nice when talking about their hometown... I can't even type what they said...
Hey, where are the Leafs? Ohhh right, on the golf course..
Man, I am actually feeling sorry for Leafs' fans... they have at least another 2-3 years of garbage teams, if not more... the previous GM, Ferguson, traded excellent prospects for garbage, and he gave HUGE contracts to average players. Cliff Fletcher is probably scratching his head, saying to himself ''WTF do they want me to do with THIS?''. Their best player is 37 years old and free agent this summer, the rest is average and overpaid, so near impossible to trade, in the nets, Toskala is merely OK and Raycroft couldn't stop a beachball from going in the nets, they have nothing extraordinary in their farm team, and not much room on their salary cap.... looks pretty bleak.
I don't really understand all the negativity towards Ottawa. They have one idiot on the team (Emery) and all of a sudden, they're all a bunch of prima-donnas.
It seems that a team that makes it to the Stanley Cup Finals having a bad year the following year is a common occurrence. Personally, I think most of their problems lie in the fact they played about 100 games last year and thats why they arent the same team after November; there was too much wear and tear from last season into this one.
Ok, feel better having shown my hometown allegiance, now onto my own predictions.
Montreal in 6 over Boston
Ottawa over Pittsburgh in 6
Washington over Philly in 5
New York in 6 over the Devils
Detroit in 5 over Nashville
San Jose over Calgary in 5 (sorry Flames fans)
Minnesota over Colorado. Minnesota may be the surprise team of the West.
Anaheim over Dallas in 5. Burke wasnt nuts about the wear and tear thing, so two of their top players got a few months off extra to take it easy.

That would be a mistake. Emery is 25 years old, has some maturing to do but his physical ability is top notch. *IF* he can get his head on straight he has the potential to be a very good player. Goalies in general do not hit their prime until they turn 30. Giving up on him now would be a total waste of money.
Paddock broke this team, now Murry has to find a way to fix it. It won't happen this year but they'll be back on top next season. That said, the Penguins are in for a shock if they think Ottawa is going to just roll over for them.
I agree that patience with players is important, but that's a key position and the bottom line in this salary cap world is, can they afford to be patient? I just don't know. I don't think the rest of the league is impressed nor willing to take chances on him either, the word is they wouldn't take him as a freebie at the trade deadline, just to dump the salary, so there you go. Hopefully, he can at the very least get back to last years level of play. I never thought he was as good as some were saying but he certainly wasn't hurting the club.
My opinion of Emery is that he merely needs some guidance... sad to say but he acts like a spoiled teenager, but the tools are all there. The guy has got talent, no doubt... he just needs his head straightened out. But then again, can you blame him in a sense? 25-years old and he is paid more money per year than most make in a lifetime... PARTY TIME!!! I strongly believe that it takes much more than talent to make it in the NHL... you need a hell of a head on your shoulders not to get swept up in all the hype. Fame and money can corrupt character big time... that's where the guidance comes in. And unfortunately, I don't see anyone on that team that would help him there.
Heatley? ... remember what got him out of Nashville?
Spezza? ... another hothead
Redden? ... unmotivated, doesn't care
Alfredsson? ... riding his contract, looks like he doesn't want to get involved
Gerber? ... wants his job, so he won't help
My best comparison would be that the current Sens look a lot like the Habs did last year and the year before, with all the bickering and individualism, but with more talent, which got them into the series. They played as a team in the beginning of the season, and were virtually unbeatable. Then the bickering started. On the positive side, most of the veterans are signed, so chances are still good next year although Alfie is getting up there in age, but like the Habs did last year in the end and this year since the beginning, they need to introduce new blood which will push the veterans to surpass themselves... and maybe start having a good time playing in the process. THAT has been the Habs' key to success.
Keep Emery and support him well. Keep a few key veterans. Trade some out to make room for new young players that only want to impress.
...Look at Ottawa this summer. I will bet you they will try to get Hossa back.
I have a different opinion on a few of the players:
Alfie: he suffered a hip injury that is preventing him from going full steam. They were hiding it a bit with a "back injury" but you can tell at the end of games, whether they were winning or losing, he'd have trouble pushing with his legs.
Redden: the guy drives me nuts, but I don't believe it's from a lack of effort, but rather the pressures of being paid as a number 1 d-man when you're probably better suited as a number 2-3 on a team. Once you go down that path, it's very difficult to get out of it, bad habits are habits after all.
Healtey: He needed to mature and it took an unfortunate incident to grow him up that cost a life. But he didn't leave because of trouble in Atlanta, it was just too hard to pass by the same spot of the accident on his way to the arena, his hockey career was back on track when he left.
Spezza: the only hothead thing I think he's done was celebrating too much in front of the goal and even then the goalie's reaction was not called for. I just wish they'd stop showing that #$%T@$ commercial with his deke and goal against Montreal. Enough is enough!
Neil: The one guy that disappoints me this year. Last year he led the league in hits (or near the top). This year, he's invisible or gets dumb penalities. I think he's ok, but some players age rapidly in the world of Hockey and I fear that might be his problem. I remember Chris Nilan went through the same weird drop off near the end of his Montreal run.
Gerber: Whenever a player says "I've lost my confidence". Whenever a goalie says that, it's a scary thing because now you think if he allows one bad goal, does that goal take-away his confidence, again?
Seriously, I don't follow them super religiously, but aside from the Emery issue, I don't recall any bitching or in-house arguments, outside of typical family-type issues.
- the practice issue: all because of Emery - the fight at practice: it involved Emery (even then, I thought it could be a good thing, him and mcgratton seem to think it was ok eheh). - Police stopping players in their cars: that would be Emery.
I'm sure Emery is getting SOME bad raps, but until he works hard at practice and accepts he's the architect of either his good fortunes or bad, his career will tank rapidly.
It just seems like it all went downhill for the sens when this crap about emery missing practices started. I could just be committing the post hoc fallacy, but that's how a layman like myself sees it.

Emery was an a**, no doubt about it. He got the big paycheck and his already large ego tripled in size. I do put some blame on Paddock for this though, he let him get away with it time and time again. Paddock coddled him and Emery took full advantage of that.
Alfredsson? ... riding his contract, looks like he doesn't want to get involved
I gotta object to this one.
Alfie is a stand-up guy from the outset. Remember he won the "rookie of they year" and never held out for more money like our Russian friend. He was quoted then as saying I have a contract and that is what it was worth when I had no experience - if I didn't play well or got injured I would have received the same amount.
He's up there with Sundin just not physically as big - and therefore not as dominating physically. He's not going to intimidate someone with his fists or hits. "Get involved" - that's not his job. Is he first in the corner - yes - is he willing to hold onto the puck in danger zones for a better offensive chance - yes. Sure, sometimes I wish he would give some cheap shots after the whistle - seems noone on the Sens is doing the "dirty work" - that other teams are doing (for sure not Redden, Philips, Mezaros, ...)
The Bell hit was "not cool" as Fisher said - enough said. Alfie publicly takes blame for having his head down. Stand up guy again.
As much I was wanna believe the Sens roll over the Pens - I think the pens in 5...
Excuse me???? He,s captain for pete's sake!!!! If his teammates are slacking, he should be the first to denounce it.
..Nothing much on his part. And I have an ironclad inside source that confirmed it. But yes, he is a nice guy, but seems discouraged by whats going on, instead of pushing...
I was in a pool today with 9 guys...12 rounds. Last year, in the first round, 5 Sens were picked. Today, Spezza was first, but in the EIGHTH round!!!!!! Over SIXTY players went before the first Sen. And one of the guys there makes his living from the Sens! ( He runs the catering at Scotiabank place!). Not much confidence in this town! Emery will be bought out for sure after its over....no one else in the league wants him. I know for a fact that they tried to shop him, and nobody wanted any part of him. He's nothing but a cokehead. Redden is just playing it out, not that he ever was anything but a mediocre defenceman anyhow.
I drew the #2 pick, and #1 took Datsyuk....easy for me, Sidney Crosby, and by the time it came all the way back, I didn't even have to speak. Everyone knew it was JARRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMME IGIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNLLLLLA. Penguins vs. Flames in the final...Thornton chokes in round #1, then the Flames roll thru Detroit and Dallas...Penguins toy with the east, taking out the Habs in 5 in the semis, after sweeping Ott. and Wash. Flames then outlast Sid the Kid, who gets ejected in Game #7 for crying like the baby that he is!!!
..Nothing much on his [Alfie's] part. And I have an ironclad inside source that confirmed it. But yes, he is a nice guy, but seems discouraged by whats going on, instead of pushing...
Geez, 89 points in a season and he's slacking off..., can't wait to see when he plays motivated then...
Discouraged, yeah - but it's a mistake for any player to air dirty laundry to the media.
As for goalies and drugs - rumours - name one that isn't on something to stand in front of that crap (Or at least you must admit Emery wouldn't be the first - maybe just no the best drug/goalie combo )
Either way, talk about the Sens now, 'cause they'll be golfing soon.

Again you misquote me... he played phenomenally, but didn't speak up or react as a captain should. He just kept quiet or said it was his fault in front of the media. Not once have I seen him shake up anything. I could say that it seems to be a trend with European captains as they seem to be reserved, but I can give Sundin as an example. There have been many reported instances of Sundin literally shaking up his team in the locker room... too bad the team wasn't much to shake up, but that is another discussion.
I can give many other cases in point of actions team captains can take... Alfredsson prefers to lead by example, and doesn't push comments. That is usually great, but the Sens need a serious kick in the a**... and I am afraid that it will come in the form of a hasty elimination.
This being said guys, nothing would make me happier than to see them eliminate Pittsburgh and hand Crosby his a**. Sorry guys... I don't like him... he reminds me of Lemieux when he plays... Christ does he ever whine a lot, but yes, the guy is magic on ice. Malkin for me is the shiznit.
And speaking of Pittsburgh, this is probably coach Therrien's last chance... no cup = no job.
And as to the rumor that Murray is pushing, that the Penguins dropped the last game so that they could face the Sens, that is total horseshit... the Penguins had the Eastern conference championship within their grasp... do you honestly think that players would give that up just to face the Sens??? No way... players have too much pride.

I can't find the link anywhere but last year in the playoffs, can't remember which series, Buffalo I think, things weren't going so good and after the Sens won the game, several players on the team mentioned he'd shown leadership in the lockeroom between periods and to them, his leadership was the main difference for them winning the game.
I won't argue, he's not a ra-ra type of captain, but I think many teams have won series without a ra-ra captain but many have won WITH a captain that shows impeccable work ethic.
But the truth is, he's not there so if I had to bet the house, I wouldn't bet on the Sens! But a small wager? Sure! But 2 Maaca shirts is expensive, make it an even $20. But I'm not sure if I want to outright bet the sens will outlast the habs. That's like two bets for me, one the Sens have to beat Pittsburge and 2, the Bruins would have to beat the Canadiens because it's very possible in the next round, the Sens would meet the Canadiens and without knowing if Fisher/Alfie/Kelly are back, I wouldn't want to bet that far into the future. Are you willing to just make the bet? "Will the Sens beat Pittsburg?". I'm willing to bet that!

Steve Yzerman comes to mind...
Fact is, we don't know what kind of captain he is in the locker room. He does not go public with internal issues and personally, I like that. Many, many current and former Sens have said that Alfie is very vocal in the room when he needs to be. Is he Mark Messier guaranteeing playoff wins in the press? No... he's more like Yzerman keeping is mouth shut in public and dealing with team issues behind closed doors.
There are stories going around that he had a couple of 1-on-1's with Emery this season and that's why Emery's been out of the press the last month or so.
He might not be the most public guy but he's perfect for this team and this city.
Say it with me... ALFIE! ALFIE! ALFIE! ALFIE! ALFIE! ALFIE! ALFIE! ALFIE! ALFIE!

While I don't think they tanked the game on purpose it was pretty clear the instructions from the coaching staff was "don't get hurt". I watched that game and I can tell you the Penguins had very little interest in going into the corners and mixing it up with the Flyers. They did not try to lose but they did not try to win either.

Nope actually i did not forget last year. I was allong time ago when the sens arrived i was a sens fan. Well not really 10 years since i have been getting fustrated started with removal of Martin. the BS this year just made things worse. I still like the Sens but they needs a drastic change removal of a few players. Redden,Emery of the top of my head and captain should be fisher not alfie i find.

Please tell - what was the Spartan screw up was - I can't bring myself to watch these days.
I saw the youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi5nCd1ZVrw) - seems lame - but not bad - I was thinking maybe he skewed a few penguins during the speech. Are the lyrics from 300?

It takes a doofist with leather undies, a Walmart Superman cape with a plastic He-Man play-sword and a greased helmet 5 sizes too big to motivate you fans?
Hey morons... the Spartan age was 400 years before the Roman empire... that guy looked straight out of 300, as stated. Put an open helmet on him, a bronze breastplate and a glaive instead of a huge plastic sword and it would have been better...
Jesus Christ, I thought Youppi with the Habs was bad... this takes the cake!!!

Yep, me is sad. I'm one who thinks they did try, but there just was no gas left in the tank and you mix that with zero confidence and you have what we got. Doesn't matter why, all I know is the best playing team of the two certain won this series, the Pens outplayed the Sens in every facet of the game.

Oh wow, the Habs got SPANKED last night. Price was definitely off his game, but it also looked like the Habs were up to their old tricks of having 5 forwards and no defense!
And damn, I don't know what the refs were on but there were some pretty bad calls going on (for both teams).
