I am assuming you are not only gluing the stairs in place?  Wood glue or carpenter glue will do the job to help secure it with the screws etc.

Hope this helps

Gorilla glue expands as it dries (filling in all the crevices...) however too much and you have an awful mess when it oozes out.

I would go with a good quality wood glue myself.

Either PL Premium or there is a special type of urethane that you use along with screws. It remains somewhat flexible and eliminates any stair squeaks.

Retiring soon...

That's probably worth considering.   Don't take my advice, the only glue I own is the stuff my dad brings over 'cause he knows the kindergarden-glue I have won't work...

I would also ask carpenters what they would use.  There are good glue out there but have you ever seen anyone on a TV show wood working use anything else than carpenter glue?  Ask yourself why?

My second 2 cents
