From what I read he took a break from filming his latest documentary because of poor weather.  He then went snorkling in the shallows to film some kid stuff for his daughter's upcoming tv show.  That's when he got hit..  Sucks....

It seems strange. After watching him do all kinds of crazy stuff I would never do (catching king cobras by the tail, laying down next to wild kommoto dragons etc.). He finnaly gets it doing something I would love to do.

Your about as likely to die from a singray hit as you are from a dog bite.

as somebody said on fark, "it's like Bill Nye  (the science guy) dying from an baking soda volcano accident"...

the last stingray death on record for Oz was 1945.

From another message board...

Almost impossible to get killed by a stingray
September 4th, 2006

First, I liked Steve Irwin a lot, and this is very sad... But I'm a
scuba diver, and at the risk of pissing off everyone, I have to say
this: Irwin must've done something foolish to get killed this way.
Put simply, it's damn near impossible to get killed by a stingray.
They have to feel threatened, and all they can do with their
(poisonous) tail spines is to flick them upward (and they're not THAT
long.) For Irwin to have actually been killed by a stingray barb to the
CHEST, he would've had to have been on TOP of the thing, or else
holding it and clutching it to his body. (Maybe lifting it out of the
water for a camera shot.) If he were swimming too close to the
stingray, and actually tried to lay on top of a large one, sitting on
the bottom, then I could see it - but this is the first time I've
EVER heard of a diver being killed by a stingray. I'm very sorry
Steve's dead, but odds are, he would still be alive if he'd been
practicing safe diving techniques.

Yea I'm in the same boat as Mark.

I liked Steve and it's a huge loss and I feel sorry for his family.

But as the old saying goes, if you play with fire you are going to get burned.  Seeing the crazy and iresponsible things he has done in the past, it really was only a matter of time before something like this happened.  It's very unforunate, and as a reptile lover myself a huge loss for the community.  Steve was a great advocate for wildlife conservation and did amazing things for allot of animals.  But had he been more careful in the things he did he would most likely still be here today.
