First off welcome to the group! This is a great place for advice and moral support as the hobby gets addictive
You haven't really indicated a budget. You mention $1,000 is too much, but you didn't mention what you are looking to spend. As Mike said, at $1,000 you won't be getting a DMD pin -- that is working anyways. If you are sub-$1000 then Sys. 11s are a good choice. If you are sub $500, then you are probably going to be looking for an early 80s game and you will have to learn very quickly how to maintain pins. You could also consider an EM. There was a posting for a $250 EM that was local. Good price, but I cann't comment on the game play.
Yeah I'm a sub $1000 right now for sure! I've just missed a few wicked deals too! Oh well, this does certanily look like the place to find a pin and some good people to help me out. As for the VW's, yup, that was one of my addictions too. I have both a 68 camper and a 75 super beetle. The Beetle is for sale right now. Or Id trade it for $5000 worth of pinball machines....come one fella's I know someone out there would love a bug.....My previous addiction to VW's was mopeds.....I had 6 in my garage before I quit that one. I think I may get into trouble once I buy my first pin, eh?
Didn't realize anyone else here was into VW, between the wife and I we have a touareg, new beetle and a new beetle convertible. I'm looking for a 75+ super beetle.

Life is like Pinball!! You never know where you will bounce or where your going but sometimes you have that one amazing shot But on the other hand you have those darn gutter ball where you just get frustrated.
Theres that guy from N.S. on Ebay selling a bunch...how much do you think it would cost to ship a pinball machine from there to Ottawa? I asked him but he didnt reply.....

Those sound like pretty good rules to live by.......Its gonna be hard not buying the first one I see. I remember T2, Haunted House, Cue Ball Wizzard, Lost World, Pinbot, and Taxi the best.....ramps, ramp, and more ramps. Plus...there was this one game that had a crazy multiball, Id know it if I see it....Wow, that was a fun machine!
One of my first machines was a Data East WWF Royal Rumble. NOT collectable by any means but it's a DMD game, widebody, 2 playfields, 4 flippers, shaker motor, 6-ball multiball, etc. The kids loved it AND it only cost me 1000$ (at the time).. Fact is that non-Williams games are cheaper and may constitute a good starting point. Williams gameplay/quality is typically much better though which explains the higher prices.
The trick is to keep an open mind. If you want a pinball to play then buy what you enjoy. If you want a "collectable" or something easy to resell, then buy a Williams/Bally.
My 0.02$

Oh and by the way, none of these typically go for less than 1000$ (assuming they work and are complete!).. As a matter of fact most of them go around 1300-1500$...
