This monetary policy makes no sense to me...

Our economy is strong (...all things considered...) and the US is so far in the toilet
that even flushing out all that bad debt won't fix anything.

The US debt is 11 TRILLION dollars (...that's 11,000 BILLIONS folks ...),
how can their dollar be worth anything....?

If this were any other country, they would have been bankrupt long ago.

As for the argument that Canada is rich in commodities (oil, lumber, electricity)
and that the demand will drop with a US recession ... so what ...

China and India are STARVING for resources and will hungrily buy whatever the US won't.

This 20 cent loss on our dollar makes no sense to me whatsoever.
(...although exporters are tickled-pink about it ..)

I can only expect (...and hope) that our loonie will climb back up soon.

$teph

Agree - funny how we all should have bought $USD or pins in the summer - but we can't all be Buffet's...

I have a Pinball Resource order coming soon - I ordered at the beginning of October, but you don't pay until the parcel arrives...  ...being naive I would thought Harper staying elected would have been good for the dollar..

The fact our $$ is receding is a good thing.  I don't like the fact it's fluctuating so quickly, but I think a 10-20% exchange is reasonable and healthy for all sectors of the Canadian economy.

Except for the sector of the economy that demands that I pay 20% on pinball part orders.  Pass the KY, please?

Oh don't get me wrong, I would prefer buying my parts (and pins!) at par as much as the next guy.   That's why I went crazy buying all those parts while we were @ Expo.  Did we all luck out or what?  Just think how bad it would have been if Expo was just one week later?

Same mess again. Tourism and manufacturing hale the low Canadian dollar, but pretty well all other sectors eat the pain.

I stopped looking south for now. Unless they are damn near giving the stuff away it's not worth bringing stuff in. Conversly I don't see as much out there that I would have expected in that regard.

Anyone that doesn't think China is having a hangover too with the U.S. debacle is wrong. Our currency almost mirrors the commodity market. Supply and demand, demand is down and so are we.

WUSS!

don't you have memories how expensive the hobby was in 2002 with the exchange at 1.50?

The reason the dollar is descending is simple.. oil is falling. never in their wildest dreams did OPEC think that people would cut back on driving. over 90 billion kilometers not driven from october 2007 to may 2008 in north american alone.

and now they are predicting 4 million less new cars on the road, so demand will fall a little more.

economists always said the loonie should be at 85% of the greenback. oil soared to unrealistic heights, now the market is correcting itself.

although like the other poster said, american economy is in the toilet, it's currency should be even more demolished.

besides, there's no rhyme or reason to the markets

I'm taking a trip down to South Bend, IN to catch a Notre Dame football game next month. I'm saying the exact same thing. However, from what I gather it's only $10 each way to get to downtown Chitown via train.

There's a time to buy and a time to sell.

Now's the time to sell.

There's a good side to everything, you can concentrate on the bad side, but that's too bad for you if you do so.

Claude.

Yes!! it is, but money might be rare for some people south of the border. Remember the American economy is hurthing....which might (I hope not!!) lower the value of our pins
