I was looking at Twin Galaxies after Steph had posted about his 3.5hr marathon with Robotron. It would appear there are tournament scores that would make more sense than playing for hours on end. I know I used to be able to roll Defender and it would come down to a matter of endurance to obtain the high score. Stargate I have yet to roll but the games are lengthy each time I attempt a high score and I don't really have the desire to stand there for hours on end which has precluded me from trying to get any further. When max difficulty is 99 I know what I am up against wave after wave.
In tournament the game is quite short. No free men. I just punched up the Twin Galaxies settings and my first game of Stargate in awhile would have placed me 4th. So this is something that I can work with. Short games that I have time for.
Here are the settings I used:
Variation: Points [Tournament] Platform: Arcade Rules: Extra Ship Every: 0 No Extra Ships Ships for 1 Credit Game: 5 Ships for 2 Credit Game: 7 Free Play: No Master Difficulty Control: 3 Intial Difficulty: 5 Moderate Maximum Difficulty: 30 Moderate 1st Wave of Accelerated Difficulty: 0 Last Wave of Accelerated Difficulty: 0 Difficulty Acceleration Rate: 0 Moderate Inviso Time Per Ship: 10 Men Needed To Warp: 4 Last Wave Warp Allowed: 10
Personnaly i prefer the tournament setting because it is more skill and hability than physical endurance. Games that i'm interested to ''try'' tournament setting are Robotron and Blaster. In the 80's they were no tournament or marathon setting, the world record was the highest score that it's. Today they make tournament setting because the skill of the players improve a lot over the years. PS: (I can easily beat the world record in marathon setting for Williams Blaster but it would take me 15 hours )

I should try the no free men thing on both Defender and Robotron. That's likely a good way to refine the way you play. I used to be able to roll Defender, but since getting it up and running again recently, I seem to fall apart around 500K on default settings. Getting old I think. The best I've been able to pull on Robotron is about 4M on default settings. I don't think the game's getting any harder by that point, it's more a matter of keeping focused on what you're doing.

Have any of you Robotron nuts tried Geometry Wars 1 or 2 for the 360? It's pretty damn fun! I also recommend Pac-Man CE, it's an amazing updated version of Pac-Man.

Who's up for a virtual Robotron tournament? Everyone with a Robotron can set it on tournament settings and post a screen shot of their high score table by whatever end date we determine. Winner gets bragging rights. Perhaps a new thread is in order? And I suppose a certain degree of gentleman's honesty will be required. Anyone interested? It only takes two to participate, I suppose.
If I still had my Defender, I'd suggest the same for that game, but I sold it and have no real regrets. Robotron is just better.
