I remember reading the details of your "almost" purchase a year ago and the fallout the occured afterwards here on the group. Out of Curiousity why are you not interested in getting one anymore?

Congrats! Looks great too! How long were you trying to acquire a Joust?
I've always had a "soft spot" for Joust, but it didn't develop into a "must have" itch until about 2 years ago.
A buddy of mine here in Ottawa picked one up (project) for $700 about 3 years ago. (got it from Helge of all people...). It's been sitting in a storage locker ever since and I tried everything to buy it from him...but he won't sell.
I also remember another one for sale not too far from me about 3 years ago for $2000. At that time I thought that was just "stooopid" money.
Then, from about Oct 2006 to Apr 2007, I saw no less than 5 sell on ebay, all for well over $4K. (...one of them being the "infamous" machine that I was "supposed" to get, but that the seller screwed me and sold it to someone else for more money. I think Pat paid $1500 for it, and flipped it for $4500 ! )
[ That's when I realized supply and demand had kicked-in and this pin was now in the "big price" league. ]
Around that time, another MAACA member (PinballWizard) had a partially assembled/restored one for $2500, (the rusted out one Sparky saw at Alouette for $1500) but the machine didn't "feel" right...
(..very obvious touch-ups on the PF, the cabinet had laminate panelling fixes that didn't match the original, the machine was completly apart with pieces all over the place. I would never have been sure that I got all the pieces .... it just didn't seem to be worth $2500 )
After that I was resigned to accept the fact that if I really wanted a nice one, I'd have to bite the bullet and pay the asking price.
So when one turned-up for sale on this forum late last year, I didn't hesitate... I rented a trailer and drove 10-hr round-trip to Quebec city to pick it up. (...which was nothing compared to the round-trip to CALIFORNIA that the seller had done to pick it up in the first place ! )
So overall, it took about 18 months from the time I wanted one until the time I got one. But truth be told, most of that time was spent accepting the price hike I'd have to pay. If I had been willing to pay $4K earlier, I likely wouldn't have had to wait 18 months.
Interestingly though, after the "flurry" of Jousts I saw for sale in 2007, this current auction is the only I've seen so far this year, and there are no listings on PinballClassifieds.com.
Maybe people are waiting for the "next" price hike before selling off !
(..but not me, I'm keeping this one ... eventhough my wife can't understand why !)
Good story, glad that it is with someone who really appreciates the game! Now the million dollar question... do you play it or is it a collectors piece?
Current Pins: White Water, No Good Gophers, Fish Tales, Whirlwind, Rollergames, World Cup Soccer 94 Gone but not Forgotten: The Shadow, Who Dunnit, Demolition man, Special Force, Mr. & Mrs. Pacman, Dirty Harry, Space Shuttle, Comet, Queen of Hearts Gone and COMPLETELY Forgotten : High Speed 2: The Getaway Vids: Super Sprint, Neo Geo, Bar top dart game. Arcade: Bubble hockey, Foosball, QB Pass Attack, Electronic basketball
Now the million dollar question... do you play it or is it a collectors piece?
A bit of both....
It's no surprise that the game is really quite bad as a single-player game.
I tried it solo a few times, but when you've got LOTR, TZ and TSPP in 'da house, ... well let's just say that the level of "depth" isn't quite the same.
It's great at parties and gets played non-stop, but when it's just me, ...no, it doesn't get played much.
.... but that's OK !
I'm perfectly fine in admitting I bought it for the "collector factor", and only play it at parties...
Truth be told, I'm probably more of "collector" than a "player" anyways...
My wife on the other hand, doesn't understand why I've got this "boat anchor" I never play when I could use that valuable space for another machine SHE would rather play !
I asked her the same question about her fine China, ...and that usually ends that debate !
That said, I should host a MAACA meeting this summer so I can fire it up !
Then again, Paypal will continue to screw us all by providing a crappy exchange rate of $1 US = 98c CDN
Steph
Actually i think everyone are taking a fee to convert devises, not only Paypal. Your own bank will charge you as well and maybe even more in some case..
Anyone knows where devises can be traded equally ?

Best bet, to save money, would be to have it shipped to a location closest to you at the border. You will save a shitload by not having your transport cross over the border. Pick it up yourself in the US then.
Most shippers have terminals close to the border... they might agree to hold it there.
now I've got to go pick it up in Washington state (43 hour drive). This time it should be keeps.
Whao...think about this for a second...
Quebec City to Spokane Washington = 4500 KM ! (each way ! )
Return trip = 90hr of pure driving, 6 full days including rest-stops and hotels.
Gas ( assuming a very good 15L/100 for a large vehicle ) = 1350 L @ $1.00L (US Gas price) = $1350
When you add food and lodging, you're looking at WAY over $1500 for the trip. (...not to mention driving for a Hellish 6 days straight ! )
Even if shipping is $600, that's still a way better deal...
Besides, like others have said... if you have it shipped to a US city near the Canadian Border, you can probably find shipping for $300-400 .
...then again, I know you drove to California to pick-up the earlier Joust, so I guess you know what you're getting yourself into . I guess you like driving !
Gee... , I "almost" feel guilty about buying that one from you six months ago...
thanks for your concern Steph, I appreciate it. This is what I planned: We are 2 drivers, we take turns driving (night and day) one drives while the other sleeps, so, no hotels, it should take about 50 hours to go and about 50 hours to come back (trafic jams allways happen on these trips). I bring a giant lunch for the trip heading Washington, so, no restaurants to go, we take a well deserved shower when we get at the guy's place, load the game and back we are, coming back though, we eat at restaurants. AND THIS TIME "NO CHILDREN"!!!! It'll be waaayyyy easier. My teenage girl can take care of my 2 younger kids. I've calculated about 700$ of gas maybe 100$ of restaurants (fast food, of course), hoping nothing goes wrong along the way.
North American Van Lines ? Although not the cheapest, they do door to door delivery...
Or, if the machine can be safely palleted, Forward Air (with insurance).

I've emailed the guy who bought my JP. It's getting shipped to California to get an idea of cost. I think he is using NAVL. I'm sure the cost is less than $800 and you don't have to take off a week from work.
I'll PM you the details once I get word back from him.

That's gotta end up being the pricest JP in history. Was it going to the Spielburg residence?
They are a Canadian company but transport to-and-from the US as well.
I've used them to ship some video games within Canada, and they were VERY reasonably priced. ( Especially if you pick-up at their terminals rather than home delivery . I've had games shipped for about $100 ... )
After my last session with LOTR during the TOPL playoffs; I have only one rule with regards to Stern..... "Avoid".
Life is like Pinball!! You never know where you will bounce or where your going but sometimes you have that one amazing shot But on the other hand you have those darn gutter ball where you just get frustrated.
I've asked for a quote, 875$ wrapped up and shipped to the customs. Have you heard from the guy yet? Must be pretty similar.
I emailed him yesterday and haven't heard back from him yet. He could be busy. Once I get an email, I'll let you know.
Wow!!! I had no idea it was that much. I'm really surprised. I thought it would be in the $500 range.
I guess they are including wrapping the game? The seller won't do that for you? In the case of my sale, I'm wrapping it and strapping it to a pallet. I only asked for $50 to cover materials and time. I'm going to put cardboard between the head and body, cover body with plastic wrap, double layer of cardboard with plastic wrap inbetween, secure head, strap to pallet, and then wrap with plastic wrap again.
For my move, I packed all my pinballs in essentially the same manner -- less one extra layer of plastic wrap. I got the cardboard from The Brick superstore on Hunt Club. They have TONS of cardboard and are very happy to get it the heck out of there. Any furniture store is a good choice for getting cardboard. See all those sofas, fridges, etc. all set up? They are shipped wrapped with cardboard
For those interested, the shipping cost from Ottawa to California is $650 USD. Wow! And that's with me wrapping it and making it completely ready for the company. All they have to do is come to my door and get it. Shipping has gone up quite a bit.
Which is a good reason to buy and sell locally. With the price of gas and shipping, it better be a steal or you really want a road trip if a pin is far away.... says the man who recently drove 11 hrs round trip for two pins.
No No No, $135! form Toronto, then it goes up by $100 from Quebec last time I shipped one. Things are going up though, I am gled I am almost done!

It's a unique wrapping job! I incorporated half a dozen industrial sized garbage bags into the shrink wrap and as an added bonus banded it all around with 3" wide duct tape on the outside of everything just to make sure the wrapping didn't loosen up. Hope you own a good pair of scissors.
Any idea where the magical mystery tour is at? I know Vengeance is trying to T up a meeting in the city to swap BR for SS, but sitting at a coffee shop for two days straight wasn't part of the plan.
Can an Accent actually pull any trailer (even if total loaded weight is 1000 lbs), and also brake safely ?
I think that's what qualifies as: "a question you should never ask"...

Got an update in Claudes Cross Country Adventure, I've now got a meeting time, unfortunatly didn't get to speak to Claude directly missed his call but 8:30 am tommorow is the meeting time to do the switch.
I'll tell you, Claude brought my Mystery Castle & Dino Eggs in that same Magic Trailer, and it made it from Quebec to Waterloo Ontario, in the winter none the less, a bit of water did get through the shrink wrap and onto the mystery castle and dino eggs, fortunatly it seemed to only go on the outside cabinet and playfield glass, so a quick cleanup and they were good to go.
That trailer is scary, but it works,

my honda element warns you that 750 pounds is the maximum allowable weight for passengers and trunk!
Luxury. The manual for my 1989 Pontiac Firefly (3 cylinder) said "Maximum passenger and load capacity: 600 pounds." Think about that. It had four seats. I was riding the rims with four passengers. Trying to get that thing over 110 kms/hr with more than two people in it was a trick in itself.

Reminds me of the Suzuki 4X4 I once had. Throttle had two positions to get around; off and matted. 100Kms/hr was only witnessed downhill with a tailwind. Mind you I completely submerged it once. Pulled it out, let it dry, changed the oil and fired it up. Other than it smelling like a swamp for a month all was fine.
We had 3 Pinball from Toronto to Quebec city a few month ago !
Here's a little pic of the 3 pinballs towed by Joce's civic. They were under the rain half the ride and I can certify that nothing went inside. Everything was well pack and the bottom of the three pins were a supported by wood so they would not touch the bottom of the trailer. As MachineSlave and Ballyboy seen, guys from LA BEAUCE are doing a great job

Firefly is not a car, it's a scooter on steroids... rented a firefly once (it was the only car available) for a reunion trip out to ottawa.. There was a thunderstorm and massive downpour on the way back, it slowed the car down.. then again there were 3 of us already in there.

That's where a mechanic with an engineering background comes in! I used to rally race with an Innocenti Turbo (which is smaller than a Firefly!). I owned 1 which I raced and 3 for parts. I modified it constantly and by the time I was finished, the 993cc powerplant went from a meek 72hp with 6 psi of boost to 219hp at 16 psi of boost at nearly 8000 rpm on the dyno! I beat the living mess out of 5.0 mustangs on an 1/8 mile. I managed 225km/h on the 15 coming from Saint-Sauveur at 2am one night... ahhh, the years of living dangerously.
One day a buddy of mine needed to have his camping trailer moved 3 kms from where it was... I had a hitch on the Innocenti... so I said, hey, why not...
It was a site to see... a 19-foot camping trailer hooked onto a 1200lb microcar. The front wheels would leave the ground when I would hit a bump in the road! The car was fine after (clutch took a beating but made it in one piece), but my buddies talked about that for years...
...for anyone who is wondering wtf is an Innocenti, here is an image...
Mine was 1994 Corvette blue, had 15'' mags (barely fit on...) and I had 2 Nissan 300ZX hood scoops on the hood that were functional (I had 2 intercoolers) unlike the fake original one.
Just got into work, my part of this adventure is done
Met Claude at 9:30am, unloaded and loaded the games. Then realized that I had forgoten to grab my backglass, plastic set and legs from Claude and I forgot to give the SS legs to Claude. thankfully Claude noticed this as well and called me about 5 mins away from our original meeting point, went and met him and everything worked out just fine. He is now on the last leg of his trip to Phil's place with SS in tow.

Suprisngly he seemed pretty alert since he hasn't slept in like 5 days. Him and his buddy and driving in shifts.
I asked him if he has stopped and he said he stopped for like 2 hours last night. But one thing I thought of when I got back to the office is he has been going for basically 5 days straight, that's 5 days without a shower in a small Hyundai accent, must be getting pretty ripe in that car

This is the trip of "Legends".
- 100+ hours of driving in less than 5 days. - arguably less than 4 hours of sleep per day - cramped in a small space for almost 1 week - exceeding every precautionary measure on the car, ...and not having it explode on you...!
...sounds like fun when you're 20, ... not so much so when you're 40 ... !
I vote we call this epic story "Claude's Excellent Pinball Adventure "
Yea you couldn't pay me enough to do the trip Claude is still doing, but he is in home stretech, just needs to make it to Montreal and he is home free.

End of the day I gotta say, it is absolutley amazing that this all came togethor and cudos to Claude for all the driving he has done. There were 8 people involved in the effort and while things may be a little confusing it is all getting done and that is the main thing.
The other amazing thing is that without this group the transport wouldn't have happened, we've had pins go from:
Ontario to Calgary Calgary to Toronto Toronto to Montreal Calgary to Montreal Seatle to Montreal
quite an amazing feat! So thanks also to everyone involved, Greg, Dave, Glen, Phil, Claude, and his driving buddy and any one else I missed.

I've left the office early to be here for him around 3h30, went to play soccer at 17h30, put the kids to bed, finished the slipknot song on hard to only leave Knights of cydonia to move on to the next and final stage... and still nothing
at this point, a phone call would be nice ...
oh and lightnings are starting outside it's raining
Sorry to hear the Joust doesn't live up to your expectations especially after that long drive. You might be able to take the paint off the playfield. Perhaps try Wood Alcohol as suggested by Sparky in another thread. Might be worth a shot.
I've also been able to remove paint by simply using Novus 2 and elbow grease.
ps: I've now finished Knights of Cydonia on hard...

At least Granny and the Gators from "pinsonly" and a Soccer Ball (head to head) game I bought from another guy in Minneapolis where in very nice condition.
Is "Soccer Ball" the European version of the Alvig G. USA Football pin you sold me?
