Wife says the package from Great Lakes has arrived. Results to follow.

Will need to stock beer for people who want to come over and play. The profanities definitely will make this a bar machine.

OK heres the update:

Installed the opto board send & receive units from Great Lakes and the optos now do not show any errors. The only difficulty was that the receiver end on the original had 10 wires hard wired to the board but the new unit had pins for a plug connection. Got out the soldering iron and problem solved.

NOW HERE'S THE REAL ISSUE:

Even though I have replaced the opto unit, the minute one shoots the ball into play, the machine registers GOALLLLLLL!!! and the machine then waits for the ball to return down the trough for the next kick. The game is STILL unplayable. I thought replacing the one misfiring goal sensing opto unit would fix this but apparently not. I now have about $800 in a machine that is useless.

Would this be an issue in the switch matrix? It seems that right when the solenoid fires to eject the ball for the kick it registers goal immediately. Occasionally the machine will play normal for maybe 1  ball when first switched on but will quickly revert to registering goal right at the kick.

Anybody actually know what my plan of action should be to fix this????

I am clueless and my only other option is to make this a parts mule on Ebay as parts are scarce for this machine.

Sounds like you need to start tearing in to the wiring and the switch matrix board. Do you have the manual and schematics for the machine?

I do have the schematics. Read on RPG advanced search that this is a common problem on these machines. Someone actually new a guy who had 4 of these machines  and 3/4 of them had the same issue.

Pfutz said that a usual fix is to unplug the opto in the return trough as is was just a redundancy in case the optos in the goal did not trigger and was more trouble than anything. I tried this but didnt really get to experiment much as I dont want to wake the nanny in the basement. Seemed like the flippers did not work when the ball was launched that way.

Must either be some cross interference between the trough opto and goal opto signals or perhaps the vibration caused by the kick solenoid when launching the ball. Will try some tests tomorrow.

Fixed!!!

This game is a hoot! Thanks for all the input, guys. Most of all thanks Pfutz for a 10 yr old post on RGP with inside info on the bug.

Looking forward to having some fellow pinballers in a tournament!
Next project: Barracora complete teardown/rebuild.
