With the US prices, I'm thinking of buying some DMD's to upgrade some games and have just in case.

Pinball Life has the "standard" DMD for $130 (international shipping) - $5 off/each if 2+ ordered.

Has anyone tried out the Vishay/Dale LED model:
http://www.vishay.com/company/press/releases/2006/060712displays/

It seems credible - but for home use is longevity really a concern????.   Agree LEDs in nature should last longer - but weigh that against a standard product DMD/plasma - versus the "world's first LED DMD"?

i'm not even sure how you can buy one of Vishay's LED DMD's.

Or is it better to wait for Allentown - and hope the currency is still good - and order a bunch of parts for pick-up?

Just wondering what the pros/vets in this hobby think, and also wondering why there's no posts today - am I missing something?

Thanks,
Doug.

Just to muddy things up a bit here's another option for you. (PinLED display)
http://www.pinled.com/pinledeng/html/produkte.php

You can buy them here.

Plasma or LED? I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. PinLED display is twice the price but it's lifetime warranty looks quite attractive. IMO, if the game was a 'keeper' I'd spring for the PinLED, otherwise just buy the cheaper plasma and call it a day.
One other issue with plasma is that some particular displays will be noisy, (whine) while others will not.

BTW, I thought you said your Internet search skills were crap; and here you found that cool Vishay press release. I think you're selling yourself short.

You may want to contact Ed @ GPE about using the Vishay LED display.  Ed was one of the first people to test these, and there are some issues that need to be addressed before using them.  THEY ARE NOT A DROP IN REPLACEMENT, as these display's run strictly off the 5V of the game, and the PS is not built to handle the added load.

Best thing to do is talk to Ed if you're going to buy the LED version from Vishay.

I haven't talked to Ed personally, but here's what he had to say back in June:

From Ed @ GPE
Quoted Text
Vishay actually sent me one of these new Vishay LED displays for test and
evaluation (Vishay isn't too far from me).

They worked great and looked great. Perfect fit and drop in replacement for
the old displays.
Ran it in a TZ (Thanks to John Inc.) with a separate 5V power supply (so i
could monitor current consumption)... roughly drew one amp consistantly.
They have revised some of their online specs -- the max current is now in
the 1.5 amp range... not 3 amps as on some of their online specs.

The Vishay board uses discrete LED's rather than LED matrixes. Very evenly
spaced and even brightness.

Couple problems I saw with it.
1 -- Animations are nasty on LED displays. Regardless of manufacturer - the
rise and fade times of LED's are much faster than the old gas discharge
displays. This resulted in a lot of flicker. The animations must be
optimized for the LED displays rather than the gas discharge displays.

2 -- Green silkscreen on the board with the LED's shows up thru back glass.
They need to change the silkscreen color to black. When I last talked to
them, they said they would... but I haven't seen it yet.

3 -- the power consumption. They do eliminate the need for hv supply. But
they also add a large increase to the 5V supply. And, these poorly designed
Williams 5V supplies are already overloaded.

This would make the decision easy for me ..

Yeah - any interest in trying to get an order of 15 or more - plasma ones?   They are then only $106 @ PinballLife.

We are planning on going to Allentown...

Why would you want to go the LED route for this?
I mean, again, for a home environment, once you replace that DMD at $130 or so (or less if buying bulk or at Allentown, etc.), it will most likely last for as long as you own that machine....

Long shot, but does anyone know from experience how the LED displays perform in the Euro stern machines?  I've read that they put them in their Euro exports; and when someone mentioned above 'the animations look nasty' i wondered if they took the time to adjust the timings etc to make the LED displays look good for overseas customers?
