Good day all,

Well we all know that we can find some help in fixing some SS on this forum but I don't see many threads on EMs.  I picked up a Liberty Bell yesterday and I spent the day getting it ready.  However, I have someone I write too in the US for help on the EM since he has been doing EM for a very long time but more opinions are better thus this thread.

First, I have checked all the fuses and visually inspected everything.  I discovered a few home mod that needed to be reversed since some people can be quite unsafe doing home fixing .

This pin is two players and one of the problem is that the ball and player stepper unit will not advance.  It stays on player 1 and on ball one.  I can make it advance manually and it will work Ok but won't do it on its own.  The coil seems Ok but what is the best way to check it before changing it. I usually do a ohms test but is there a better method

I don't have the schematic yet, so any ideas?

tks

it s probably a wrong contact cause by dirt...it s wise to check them all one by one to start with and also clean every (pins connectors plug) before everything
one thing you have got to remember when hand testing the machine is that you have to make points in oder to have a avance ball and by the same a advance player.....that being  said, there is a relay controling the points detection that will activate at the first sign of points activity on the playfield...and for some reasons a would check the systeme starting there..
....and sorry for my english

NO MATER HOW MUCH YOU PAID FOR SOMETHING...THE ONES YOU WILL REMEMBER IS.... WHAT WAS FREE

When a ball drains and the count doesn't advance, there's likely two culprits - a 'ball advance' relay or 'ball return' relay, something named to that effect, and a score motor switch that's not making contact.  You're best to get yourself right in there and check everything in that score motor - it's actually a lot faster than trying to shoot in the dark.

Read this:
http://www.pinrepair.com/em/index.htm
Then read it again.  Then get the topcast video on EM repair.

Also, you can always post on RPG with a problem - not that MAACA not's an awesoem resource, but there are some seriously knowledgeable dudes on RPG.

Good luck,
Daniel

I 2nd that.! I have fixed many EM machines that it is 99% dirty contacts(dirty rivets on motor boards) and occasionally a misaligned/bent contact.

Often gummed-up Coin unit or Player unit, or dirty contacts on disk.

Also check the outhole switch, Outhole Relay & Ball Index relay contacts.
Make sure that the Ball Index relay is activated when any points are scored.
Finally, check the Extra Ball relay contacts (if equipped).

It is often better to tighten the contact stacks of every relay and unit,
then adjust/flexstone them, *prior* to doing any power-up & troubleshooting,
especially for an as-is unknown condition project pin.
Also verify the proper functions of stepper units mechanically...

And, as you indicated, remove all unsafe amateur hacks, plus verify
the rating of every fuse (often overfusing).

In the few 100s EMs I have fixed over the years, I'd say that about a third
or so have bad unsafe hacks or poor prior repair attempts, incl. mangled
contacts and/or bad soldering jobs...

- Sylvain.

MY money is on the player unit, based on what you've described, and they take a little tinkering to get them working EVERY time. Good luck!

Update:

I got it!  Managed to find all my problems, my stepper unit problem was due to a relay contact in the extra ball unit that was in need of some adjustment!  tks to everyone that contributed and I now have a fully functional "liberty bell". Now I am going to shop her.

keep on playing

Congrats on the fix!

That's one of the nifty things about EMs - oftentimes you can just look and see what the problem is.
