I remember reading the details of your "almost" purchase a year ago and the fallout the occured afterwards here on the group. Out of Curiousity why are you not interested in getting one anymore?

I've always had a "soft spot" for Joust, but it didn't develop into a "must have" itch until about 2 years ago.
A buddy of mine here in Ottawa picked one up (project) for $700 about 3 years ago. (got it from Helge of all people...). It's been sitting in a storage locker ever since and I tried everything to buy it from him...but he won't sell.
I also remember another one for sale not too far from me about 3 years ago for $2000. At that time I thought that was just "stooopid" money.
Then, from about Oct 2006 to Apr 2007, I saw no less than 5 sell on ebay, all for well over $4K. (...one of them being the "infamous" machine that I was "supposed" to get, but that the seller screwed me and sold it to someone else for more money. I think Pat paid $1500 for it, and flipped it for $4500 ! )
[ That's when I realized supply and demand had kicked-in and this pin was now in the "big price" league. ]
Around that time, another MAACA member (PinballWizard) had a partially assembled/restored one for $2500, (the rusted out one Sparky saw at Alouette for $1500) but the machine didn't "feel" right...
(..very obvious touch-ups on the PF, the cabinet had laminate panelling fixes that didn't match the original, the machine was completly apart with pieces all over the place. I would never have been sure that I got all the pieces .... it just didn't seem to be worth $2500 )
After that I was resigned to accept the fact that if I really wanted a nice one, I'd have to bite the bullet and pay the asking price.
So when one turned-up for sale on this forum late last year, I didn't hesitate... I rented a trailer and drove 10-hr round-trip to Quebec city to pick it up. (...which was nothing compared to the round-trip to CALIFORNIA that the seller had done to pick it up in the first place ! )
So overall, it took about 18 months from the time I wanted one until the time I got one. But truth be told, most of that time was spent accepting the price hike I'd have to pay. If I had been willing to pay $4K earlier, I likely wouldn't have had to wait 18 months.
Interestingly though, after the "flurry" of Jousts I saw for sale in 2007, this current auction is the only I've seen so far this year, and there are no listings on PinballClassifieds.com.
Maybe people are waiting for the "next" price hike before selling off !
(..but not me, I'm keeping this one ... eventhough my wife can't understand why !)
Good story, glad that it is with someone who really appreciates the game! Now the million dollar question... do you play it or is it a collectors piece?

A bit of both....
It's no surprise that the game is really quite bad as a single-player game.
I tried it solo a few times, but when you've got LOTR, TZ and TSPP in 'da house, ... well let's just say that the level of "depth" isn't quite the same.
It's great at parties and gets played non-stop, but when it's just me, ...no, it doesn't get played much.
.... but that's OK !
I'm perfectly fine in admitting I bought it for the "collector factor", and only play it at parties...
Truth be told, I'm probably more of "collector" than a "player" anyways...
My wife on the other hand, doesn't understand why I've got this "boat anchor" I never play when I could use that valuable space for another machine SHE would rather play !
I asked her the same question about her fine China, ...and that usually ends that debate !
That said, I should host a MAACA meeting this summer so I can fire it up !
Then again, Paypal will continue to screw us all by providing a crappy exchange rate of $1 US = 98c CDN
Steph
Actually i think everyone are taking a fee to convert devises, not only Paypal. Your own bank will charge you as well and maybe even more in some case..
Anyone knows where devises can be traded equally ?
