I'm contemplating trading my World Cup Soccer 94 for a Bram Stoker's Dracula. What do you guys think? Fair trade? I think soccer is the better game, but I haven't gotten to play Dracula a whole bunch...
=-= PINS: Swords of Fury, Fish Tales, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Skateball =-=
Ya BSD has the soccer theme beat hands down. I'm just leary of the gameplay. I really love the layout of soccer and I'm a bit worried that we won't enjoy Dracula as much.
=-= PINS: Swords of Fury, Fish Tales, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Skateball =-=
BSD is harder. More of a challenge. Darker theme (if you have small kids). Its a real players game. I find it plays more like an 80's game, than a DMD. Art is ugly though.
WCS94 is great for the casual player. Light theme, fun toys and not too deep.
I think both are good. Just depends what you are looking for.
I could see BSD having more longevity if you are a serious player.
Such a hard choice, I consider myself a very good pinball player, so a challenging game is a good thing as I'm the one who will be playing it the most. Soccer is one of our fave games that I've had, so it's a damn hard decision....thanks for the advice guys, any other advice good or bad is welcome

Own Magic, Star Gazer, Batman Forever, STTNG, Mystery Castle (project)
Gone Fairy, Secret Service, Meteor x3, Title Fight, Eight Ball Deluxe, Bone Busters Inc., Seawitch, Starship Troopers, Strange Science, Arena, Hook, Pin*Bot x2, Time Warp, Motordome, Robocop, Black hole, Jurassic Park , Wipe-Out, Pinball Pro: Challenger I, Swords of Fury, Stargate, Party Zone
BSD lasted maybe 3weeks. WCS is still here (had it for about 5mos.)
To quote Duane "BSD is a one trick pony"
I'm quoting Hippo who is quoting me
WCS any day of the week. I've had two BSD. Both gone and forgotten. I had one WCS, sold it, regretted, and I now have another.
BSD is damn hard to sell as well except to collectors. I know some would say that shouldn't factor into it, but it is worth considering.
WCS is easier to sell to families and newbies should you ever tire of it. It has a family friendly theme, bright artwork, and fun game play -- yes fun, not dark. A game you will find yourself coming back to again and again.
Ok I was hoping someone would change my mind, but it looks like I will keep soccer haha. Majority rules, everyone says keep it so I probably should. Have patience and get a better trade...

Ya gotta have one game with lightening flippers in a decent collection. They are definitely harder to use, even if they are just 1/8" shorter. That little bit makes you adjust your gameplay. I have Dr Who as well and eventually want to get a Fish Tales.
I am not a soccer fan, but do like horror films. Mind you Bram Stoker's Dracula was more of a scary love story. The game is unusual in that it doesnt have a bunch of modes to complete like many other games of the similar era. The key to high scoring is stacking more than one (three different) multiball modes in order to build the jackpot.
My fishtales has the lightning flippers on it, I don't mind them at all. PLus they have freaking lightning on them, they look way cooler than normal flippers haha
=-= PINS: Swords of Fury, Fish Tales, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Skateball =-=
I currently own both. I think I could see WCS94 leaving first though. Just because its more of a challenge, year after year.
These two games are going to have the greatest divide among collectors. Both are love/hate games. Some cann't stand the theme of WCS. If you have kids, I cann't understand how the theme could be an issue, but I've read that time and time again. BSD, you either love the one trick pony (stack multiball) or you don't. You either love the theme or you don't.
This is one time I would say you really need to play the game and decide for yourself. And I mean really play it. BSD seems cool the first time you play it, but, for some like me, it gets old.
You said it : it's a player's game... obviously if you suck, you'll hate it !
I play pinball because it's fun. BSD just isn't for me. Those that love it, point out it's a player's game and love to attack those that don't love it. I like ST:TNG and Shadow -- both players games. I hate BSD because it gets old fast. I enjoy it at someone's house, but don't need it in mine.
WCS is an exercise in tedium to play. The game play is lackluster and just becomes the same old, same old at the end of the day. The game is way to easy to play in most instances and really doesn't provide much in the way of challenge. Start multiball, scroe goals, rinse repeat. That's it, how people can say BSD is a one trick pony and WCS isn't is beyond me. I'd honestly say there is MORE to do on BSD then there is WCS.
While yes BSD can be summed up in the simple thing of just the 3 multiballs, it's the complexity involved in getting everything lined up to stack all 3 in one shot that adds that level of excitement to keep you playing. Plus a sound package that is almost unmatched in it's eeriness. Also personally what I think to be one of the coolest starts to a multiball, the mist multiball where a pinball is dragged slowly across the the PF.
WCS is for the casual player, a game to play because they want to feel good about their ability to play well, no real challenge, no real strategy, just bang away on the flippers like a chimp.
BSD is a players game with real challenge and real strategy and I liken the feeling you get when you have Dracula yelling out "TTTHHHHHHHIIIIRRRRTTYYY MIIIILLION!!" to the same feeling of satisfaction as "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!!"
BSD if you like being challenged. It is a bitcharoony for a while and then all of a sudden you get a crazy game where you make it go crazy. Keeps you coming for more.
It is a player's pin. WCS is more cutesy and relaxed to play.
I would love to play in some tourneys, but I'm on the west coast, the guys in the VRPA hold tournaments so I'll probably play in a couple of theirs eventually Great group of guys over here and some amazing players, some of the best in Canada, Eden Stamm is part of the group for example..

If I bought a BSD again....and I mean IF.....I would switch those lightning flippers or regular ones.
Lightning flippers are an abomination on pinball machines. They were just added to make a quick buck off the player...just like "buy in".....poop on these features!
As for WCS vs. BSD....the mist-multiball is an awesome trick, and Dracula voice is spooky, but really...that is all this game offers. Otherwise it's the same old, same old, empty PF...The game was designed by a sub-par designer, and wasn't even supposed to be a Dracula game in the first place...Those games that just stick a theme on a preexisting PF bug me! Barry Oursler...meh. Your best games were designed by Python Anghelo.
WCS is a blast! two different ways to win (i.e. beat all the countries, or beat all the cities"which is pretty tough"), do all the little things like "find striker", shoot around the goalie, etc... The roll overs, the kick back, the magna-save, the soccer ball screwing up your shots, the moving target goalie, and you get to "plunge it yourself" 5ball multiball, which is a serious panic!
Show some high score pics (achieved with the glass on) at default settings and default/greater incline.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, High Scores on individual machines are meaningless. The reason being there is no Standard of Quality. Every pinball is so different even when they are the same title, it's impossible to get a reasonable baseline to determine a decent score. Outlanes, settings, kickouts, flipper strength, sling shot sensitivity, pop bumper sensitivity, all of these things and more come into play on a machine.
the only true test of skill is at a tournament, where everyone is playing on the same game at the same time on the same settings in the same place. That is where the men are separated from the boys.
And Tom, they have these fancy new things called PLANES, they take you from one place to another so distance isn't an excuse
One of your local VRPA members Robert Gagno is making the trip to the show and as another example I'll be making the 16 hour drive to Minneapolis, Minnesota to participate in the IFPA World Pinball Championship. So nut up or shutup

That right there seals you're fate a n00b. The only time I've found WCS tough to play was at PAPA when they removed the outlane posts, turned off the kickback/magna save and put lightning flippers in. That makes the game tough. Otherwise it's a bore!
Play the multiball or work you way through the countries and do what at the end of those, oh right the exact same thing, shoot the goal. What are you doing during the game, oh yea shooting the goal again, the striker awards are just a distraction and what do most of them involve again, SHOOTING THE GOAL.
At least with BSD there is some variety in the strategy, trying to work towards one big payoff and even then, even if you achieve the big payoff you still have to do well to get a decent score, you still need to keep your balls in play. Each of the multiballs is uniquely different. Castle has the risk reward of trying to lock balls to multiplay your overall jackpot, coffin has you trying to make shots under the ramp in all the chaos to spell out Dracula and mist is just a free for all where everything is lit. Yes you can argue that two of BSD's 3 modes are exactly the same, rats and bats, but again there is strategy involved around both of them. Do you start rats and bats right away on the first ball and try and get that to carry over from ball to ball, or do you try and stack a couple of multiballs and then start them so you can multiply the scores achived by the number of multiballs running. Lets also not forget one of the coolest video modes in pinball as well, and again another nice level of strategy involved in the video mode where letting the wolves get closer to you allows you to score greater points. BSD has allot more going on for it int he casual player will ever understand because they can't be bothered to figure it out. But it's a great players game with great strategy and if that is what you are looking for then BSD has it in spades.
But what I take issue with is that people are saying that WCS is a great game and BSD is a one trick pony. When that couldn't be further from the truth, WCS is way more of a limited game then BSD. The only real option you have on WCS is light multiball, start multiball, play multiball, that's it. Then the multiballs are all the same, shoot the goal. Throw in some modes where all you do is shoot to goal some more and you end up with a samey and boring game that doesn't even hold a candle to BSD.

, then you must hate a lot of machines as throughout history about 90% of machines are designed this way. First a playfield design is made and then art and toys are put in.
And to make it crappy for the designer, in many cases he had no say on the theme, and possibly didn't even know what it would be. I think Oursler got hurt with a lot of second-rate themes that made players look away.

What was it supposed to be .. is there a story behind the change ?

That'll give you an idea I guess of some of my high scores I've never played competitively though or really played to get an ultimate high score. Just play for fun. If I lived closer to VAN I'd play in their tourneys for sure and probably get alot better playing with some better competition

Are you on crack?
I was going to drop it as I really have nothing further to add than WCS is fun, BSD is ok. And wow! What incredible strategy in BSD. Do you start Bats/Rats on the first ball or not? Big deal. It's a shallow game. End of story.
What I want to comment on his Hippos comment on Ousler. He didn't say he didn't design any good machines. He said he was a sub-par designer and he is. Compared to Lawlor and Ritchie, he is at best inconsistent and at worst produces some absolute crap. Sure he designed a few decent games and some classics, but he has produced a ton of sub-par or crap machines.
Let's look at them individually:
Phoenix - crap. This game is so bad, you will have a tough time selling it. Time Warp - decent but not classic. The one at Allentown in great shape couldn't even sell for $350 Gorgar - fun game LAser Ball - crap Scorpion - crap Jungle Lord - junk. Widely accepted as the worst of the Williams multi level Solar Fire - classic. Widely regarded as the best of the Williams multi level Barracora - great game Cosmic Gunfight - never played, but low production which generally means it didn't test well. Defender - never played, but low production which generally means it didn't test well. Rat Race - not a pinball Time Fantasy - never played, but low production which generally means it didn't test well. Joust - neat concept. Not alot to it. Star Light - never played, but low production which generally means it didn't test well. Space Shuttle - classic Comet - ok in it's time period Grand Lizard - crap in my opinion. I know some love it on MACCA, but I think it's one of the worst Sys. 11s PIN BOT - great game Fire! - so-so Space Station -- great game Cyclone -- I like Cyclone. It's just fun. It's simple, though Jokerz! - fun Police Force - crap Bad Cats - crap Harle Davidson - never played WMS, Hurricaine - crap Doctor WHo - crap in my opinion Bdam STokers Dracula - decent Popeye - actually better than most give it credit. I'd call it sub-par to others produced in same period Dirty Harry -- haven't played enough Who Dunnit - crap Jack BOT -- I really like the game, but it certainly doesn't get alot of love Junk Yard - absolute crap.
And to make it crappy for the designer, in many cases he had no say on the theme, and possibly didn't even know what it would be. I think Oursler got hurt with a lot of second-rate themes that made players look away.
Not sure if that was true or not in the early days, but by Sys. 11, at Williams, the designer selected the theme and the team he wanted to work with -- depending on their availability.

Things got switched on them based on corporate decisions.
Dracula and Popeye are examples. Also Barracora was originally going to be Las Vegas. Thats why there wasnt room on the drop targets for all the letters in the title and one target has 2 R's. I think Dracula was going to be Alien but I may be wrong.

From all the topcast interviews I've listened to, this is the case. Everything "at Williams" was about integrating theme with the PF design. Some games suffered pre-fab PF's like BSD, SWep.1...but most were a total package project.
I also admit that WCS is a "great game" because is fits my style of play. And I'm not awesome at Pinball, but I certainly don't suck #3 in OPL
My style/routine of play is "Get home from work, grab a beer, and knock the ball around for 45min". I've had "Deep" games (i.e. TZ being the deepest)....but they just bore me. I'm similar in my video gaming: ...I like EA-NHL, FIFA, Street Fighter, Tetris type games...Sit down, push some buttons quickly, go do something else.
AND Mark Sprengler is the other "designer" of BSD....he's a freekin' artist, not a pinball designer
The deal might go down this Friday! My dad just bought us 3 tickets to the Vancouver/Chicago game. So I may be able to make the trade way sooner than anticipated.

Barracora was the third name for that game .. started as you noted as Las Vegas then became Jet Orbit (wtf and then the lady of the lake Barracora. I'm going to listen to the topcast later tonight to get the info on BSD

Who would have thought that a comparison between BSD and WCS94 would get so heated? Looks like B-list games are more contentious than A-list ones.

#1 Grand Prix #2 Mario Andretti #3 Wipe Out #4 BSD #5 HSII #6 LAH #7 JM #8 Shadow #9 Shaq #10 WCS
Holy crap! That list is a joke. Any list that includes Shaq and Mario Andretti in the top 10 cannot be taken seriously. I mean, really....Mario Andretti is better value than Shadow or JM or BSD? I don't think so.
In response to Johnny_eh's comments. The most "heated" discussion was between Vengence, Mr Hide and myself. We're all friends and, I think, not taking the comments too seriously. Adam and I were PM'ing back and forth during the debate.
At the end of the day, Adam and our collections are very similar in fact. We disagree on a few key games and that always starts the sh*t flying. Mr Hide just likes to stir it up
I sense some competitiveness in your tone I like that, I'm also very competitive. I'm never played in any tourneys yet though. I ain't flying across the country to play pinball, but I may drive to Vancouver to play in a couple VRPA tourneys and we'll see how I do. I'm sure I'd choke under the pressure at first as my nerves would be shot haha

WCS is definitely that fast familiar family game that would turn most non-players on. I personally like any game that cheers you on or where timed targets result in an increase or escalation in music pace. I can see how eventually, WCS will be "beat" and might not attract one back every day. It's a good entertaining game for sure. But I'll bet it doesn't challenge the champions once they've mastered a few of the more essential shots.
BSD is in my basement, super nice playfield, unfaded cab, I am VERY happy. Gonna watch the Vancouver game then it's DRACULA time hehe...thx for the opinions everyone. I will have my own opinion very soon

bsd doesn't have a deep rule set at all. however, you may score 1 billion on one game, and 30 million the next. thats enough to keep me playing. i have customized mine with noflix LEDs from germany and have the gi all purple, with glow in the dark posts. it is by far the best theme to play around with the lighting and is a blast to play in the dark. soccer is a great game, but dracula is a spiteful drain whore who always has you coming back for more!
Currently own: Bram Stokers Dracula Doctor Who Strange science Arkanoid coctail table. Someday: STTNG, TZ, IJ, CFTBL, LOTR
Gone, but not forgotten: Shadow Gorgar Blackout Genesis
Fixed it, new coil stop and new sleeve and she hits that left ramp all day long! LOVE IT!! I also did the left flipper as well. Amazing what a difference it makes. Both coil stops were pretty hammered and of course the sleeves were dirty as hell

Here's a quick pic I took of the playfield when I got it home. Installed new balls, new flipper rubbers, changed some lights, rebuilt the flippers and it's good to good. The former owners GC score is going down! haha

Then why didn't they just spell Barracora with a single "r" instead of the double ???
Have you guys ever noticed that the repro slings are more washed out in color than normal. I got a set for my Dr wWo before and my Fshtales and the colors seem dull compared to the originals?? Or is it just me being paranoid or something??

Might be a little to soon to say, but so far I love BSD more than soccer. Glad I went with my gut and made the trade even though I think most people said to keep soccer....
