Well, I finally have taken on a copntract for a complete MAME game for a friend at work. Believe it or not, this will be my first complete MAME build, from beginning to end. Here were the guy's criteria:
- future-looking (no classic arcade look) - 2 player with a trackball (big fan of fighter games) - has to be able to be used as a TV (so no inclined monitor) - full speaker system so it cab be used as a juke
Easy... I know one cab that fits all of these points... a XENOPHOBE cab!
Lucky for me, a distributor in the Montreal area had a dead Xeno-converted-to-Combatribes in their stock. So I picked it up. The guy says it hasn't worked in 6 years... 50$. SOLD!
...what a heavy bitcharoonydoony!!! I should have listened to BattlezoneMan...
Well, I bring it home, and decide, what the hell, and I plugged it in, IT WORKS!!! So for 50$, I get a working Combatribes boardset (not that it is worth all that much...), a good monitor with slight Xeno burn-in, and a sound cab. Chaching!!!
So I started to gut the cab tonight... removed the old monitor, and started to try and fit a 21" computer monitor in there. Ain't gonna happen as-is... so I chopped up the monitor casing!!! I have done this a few times so it was easy. I cut the main control panel for the monitor off the original bezel with a Dremel and screwed it inside the monitor hole.
Monitor is in!!! But it is tighter than a duck's a**... I had to move the degaussing wire a bit to make the monitor even more compact, but the overall result is great! I will have to build a custom backpanel as monitor chassis sticks out a bit, but so far so good.
On order:
IPAC 4 new custom cab sideart new marquee new bezel new CPO
I now have to build a control panel (been there done that...), and then clean up the cab for new paint, molding and graphics... should be nice!
Looks Like an awesome build underway....loved xenephobe.... should be nice and unique when done...good luck with the back panel on account with that monitor, ...imagination will be key...
Cheers...

Current Vid Roster: Carnevil, Wizard of Wor, Power Drift, Mortal Kombat, MAME(Kinda)
With that style of cab you could drill holes on the top of the bottom part, under the monitor, and make drink holders. Make a good use of wasted space
If you want to get fancy, get a Pelletier ceramic (cheap!) and turn it into a cooled drink holder!!

Looks like a real nice Big Game playfield behind it.Could use a little paint maybe.
I like the Box on top of the Big Game Playfield, it says "Dust Collection Accessory Kit" If I had known someone could Sell Accessories for Dust Collections, I would have bought Stock in that Company!!

OK...worked a few hours on it tonight. Here's what came out of it:
- Installed computer speakers + subwoofer (Altec Lansing 6-speaker kit) - Gutted and repainted coindoor - Stripped all old veneer off the cab
Doesn't seem like much, but when you see the pics of what was done, you get the picture... (no pun intended)
Pic 1 : After cutting the speakers to fit on the cab (removed the pedestal part of the plastic casings with a Dremel... pain in the a**!), I cut holes for them in the wood.
Pic 2: I cut the same holes in the steel grill to accomodate the speakers
Pic 3: Prefitting before painting the grill... looks decent.
..I then repainted the grill and the wood under it for a clean look. I like the result. All I have to do now is secure the speakers to the grill so they don't move.
I cut the hole for the subwoofer below the coindoor. I wanted to keep the door (although useless now...) in order to keep the arcade feel of the cab. Looks good as well!
Finally, I cut my 3/4" birch plywood in order to start building the control panel.
So far, so good!!!
Next step, the control panel!!! Should be easy... 2 8-way sticks, 1 4-way, 1 trackball, 6 buttons per player, and buttons on the side for pinmame. I am keeping it bare-bones-simple.
Well of course, my camera is on the fritz again... but I managed to paint the cab with a mettalic black hammer paint. I am overall satisfied with it.
I am waiting for the new buttons and joysticks to arrive so that I may wire her up. Then all I have left to do is install the art (waiting for it... but I have an old friend that may be able to print me some art... he just started a printing business, and I told him about us... there is a market for pinball and arcade art...).
BTW... I hooked up the computer last weekend, and put in Master of Puppets in ITunes (my song of choice to soundtest...).
...I think I woke up the neighbors... 4 houses down!!! Yeah baby!!! This baby's got POWER!!!
