I'm having trouble with my recently-acquired Playmatic Fairy and hope that someone can lend a hand. Sylvain!!

When I got the machine, the score motor would turn constantly the moment power was applied. I solved that problem by re-attaching a broken wire on one of the score reels. I was about to yell "eureka", but....

Now, whenever power is applied to the game, the score reels reset, but the reset control relay and the hold relay remain locked on. If a ball is inserted, the score motor will spin continuously.

Any thoughts on this one?

First look at all the connectors on the game, including the ones
from the playfield to the cabinet. There were broken wires at
the soldered connections/plugs initially on my New World.

Next, validate that all bonus and stepper units properly go
to their zero position at game reset and check that the contacts
are made properly on each unit, in that zero position.

Finally, check the player unit and the Outhole relay.

...At least, you have the schematics, it should be not too bad!

Good luck,
- Sylvain.

Do a visual check of the reset bank to see that the blades are in the correct positions in their plastic grid.  They can easily get knocked out of position if someone did some cleaning or gapping.

If the ball trough switch is NC when a ball is in, then you can trace that circuit back to the score motor to see what other switch is closed that should be open at the time of reset.

I trace back with a continuity meter with alligator leads so I have really long test probes, that way I can touch here and there all the way along the circuit, matching the state on the schematic.  This way you can check solder points too.

My 2 cents.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, guys.

I thought I'd post my results here, since I managed to get the game working.

Let me begin by saying that I'm an idiot.

Okay, now that that's out of the way.....

When I received this machine, I found it odd that I couldn't find any bells or chimes anywhere inside it. My fresh (to EM's) eyes didn't realize that the bell/chime unit had actually been removed from the machine. What does this have to do with the machine not working, you ask? Well, the bell unit has a 5-pin female connector on it. The male 5-pin connector harness sitting in the bottom of the cabinet, therefore, didn't have a home.

What did I do? I plugged the male connector into the only place it could possibly go: the replay adjustment connector (this connector is female and has jumpers for # of plays per coin, but the jumpers were not installed). It's also 5-pins (actually two 5-pin connectors in parallel) and sits well within reach of the bell unit harness. It was also empty and therefore it made logical sense that I should plug that male connector into the female connector. Makes sense, right? This caused all kinds of interesting things to happen. The reset relay would lock on and once a ball was placed in the trough, the score motor would continue to run.

As soon as I realized that I had possibly put that connector in the wrong place, I disconnected it and began playing. The machine still needs the bonus/advance units cleaned up and rebuilt. I'll get to that soon and shop it out as well. But for now, it's actually starting a game and doing what it's supposed to do, for the most part.

So.........does anyone out there have a two bell and knocker assembly for a Playmatic that they'd care to sell? ! I'd settle for any two bell assembly from any machine at this point. I'm sure I could make it work somehow. I believe the Playmatic unit I'm looking for looks like this.

I've had a lot of fun working on this machine so far and appreciate the help from the group.
