The funny thing is I was wondering when Stern was gouing to make one. I said hey they go for the big movies like LOTR there gonna make one of Pirates. Looks like they will. Looks interesting will only know when i try it tho.
Life is like Pinball!! You never know where you will bounce or where your going but sometimes you have that one amazing shot But on the other hand you have those darn gutter ball where you just get frustrated.
The game doesnt look quite finished. But then again, it is a test machine.

I was just reading the Pingame Journal and their interview with Steve Ritchie. He said now that WPT is done, he is working on something new and exciting and he stated how the next game is going be based on the hottest/best license ever. So I wonder what that could be? Spiderman? Indiana Jones? Miami Vice ?
Say 'yes' to classic Sterns. Complete MAACA-Wacko!

A Harry Potter pin would be a massive success, IMO. HP has a very broad-ranging audience and that pin could successfully be put on location nearly anywhere.
Playfield looks really ugly to me, but the rest of the machine looks very interesting, look forward to giving one a try.
I think you are missing the forest for the trees. This is a test machine with flat red plastics. Once they add the real plastics this thing is going to look SWEET! And I was definately in the "big deal" camp vs POTC is going to be the best thing ever camp I am very impressed with the look of the game.
In addition, it looks like there is alot to do (judging from the inserts). I was concerned (since it is a Nordman design) that it was going to be Scared Stiff II or Demoman II -- basically a very shallow game. Thankfully that doesn't look like the case.
So I wonder what that could be? Spiderman? Indiana Jones? Miami Vice ?
Ritchie is working on Spiderman. From the Journal, it sounds like he is really hyped about it which is a good thing. The last time he was really hyped, I mean really, really excited about a pin project was ST:TNG and we all know what a GREAT game that is. I am hoping for the same thing with Spiderman.
It was interesting to read his review in the Journal. He actually said he wouldn't have selected WPT as a theme (but in the end was happy with the game).
Personally, I don't understand why Stern continues to use "big name" designers when their most successful games (LOTR and SPP) were developed with in-house talent (and George Gomez on contract).
ok looking. have to see it with all the plastics. but pf is kind of dull looking in art and action. looks way to open at the bottom and mid section and clusted full on the top. would have been nice if in the middle or off to one of the sides that something was inplayable part of the machine. i do see the spinner stuck way up in the corner. great action i bet, if you can see it. you know, if they done it kind of like fireball but made the spinner to look like a cannon ball (didn't have to be that big). or a ramp right in the middle, could have been done up like a rope they swing from all the time. the compass just doesn't do it for me. i know it is a payout part of the game. but i expected more of a action looking machine. well play it and see. think i enjoyed the cabinet art the most. again once a full machine is posted and i see all the plastic done up, i can change my mind. but i don't expect it to be a LOTR experience. just played that for my first time last month.
From what I've read on RGP, the Stern lineup this year is...
Pirates of the Carribean Family guy Spiderman
Supposdly those are all confirmed, with POTC being a reality.
As for it not being finished, yea I know, all the plastics arn't in and what not, but I mean just looking at the playfield, I don't really like the look of it. Just that big compaoss in the middle without much else going on. Now everything else in the machine looks great, looks like it will be a really fun game to play, and depening on how it plays, might be the next machine I try and buy. But it will be interesting to see how things progress.
Also as a side note, for anyone who cares, read on RGP that Big Bang Bar has shipped and it has been confirmed, they got out the first machines to the UK before July 1st to beat that Lead Free law they are putting into place for electronics. So it is an interesting week in pinball that is for sure.
While I am not a big pin guy, I like the machine. Though I am with everyone else that the playfield is not very nice. And I can see a light coloured pf like that getting dirty very very fast.
I like the movies, so it looks like it will be a cool machine. Can't wait to see what the backglass looks like and some of the DMD animations.
Well until I play the thing its hard to make a call either way. Have to hear the sounds and see the lights flash for me to get the 'feel' of the game, and if I like it. As others have mentioned any new pinball is interesting. I just hope the kraken plastic is not the finished artwork piece.
Maybe our friends at alouette will have a potc party like they did for elvis complete with special NIB price. Seems on RGP the avg price going around is 3900 USD with tax.
Thankfully the average (on RGP) is about 85% think it's nice and 15% think it's ugly. And most of those are just anti-Stern no matter what.
I want to respect your opinion but I have to admit I think the complete opposite.. I think this is Stern's greatest game yet and that it looks beautiful (except for those ugly side rails).

I agree with gory. Lower playfield is a bowling alley devoid of any action. Ship looks like a rotten banana. Overall the artwork is nice. The backglass art looks too much like a promo poster for the movie. In my opinion, a man wearing makeup has limited appeal, but others like Frosken might find that a plus. Cab and pf art is very nice. I am hoping the resolution of the artwork does not have that typical 300dpi $50 inkjet printer appearance Stern quality.
Why can't Stern get these titles out to meet the height of their popularity when the movies are being released?
Someone please explain what the hell the problem is with the backglass... You have a pinball machine based on a MOVIE that has MANY IMPORTANT characters.. You want it to be recognizable in a quick glance.. So..... You need to put the faces of the actors on the BG and they need to be large..
That's the whole point of making a licensed pin.. To put a pirate ship on the BG would not easily associate the machine with the POTC movie.
I think the BG looks GREAT and hits the nail on the head as far as being quickly recognizable.

I'm not posting any love/hate comments until I play one.
I don't buy a car on just pictures and a video...I test drive it...
In my books, although looks are fairly important, it's the playability / diffculty / fun factor that counts the most...
Keeping that in mind, the playfield 'looks' interesting...can't wait to try it at PAPA next month!

Mike if that was the "whole" point you would get it out before the first movie. Not after the sequel had openned. Stern fails to capitalize on the momentum of the licence by being late to release.
I think a little more creativity would go a long way. Look familiar
You know the action figures are already in Walmart when the Spiderman movie is out deal.

I'm totally on board with Mike on this and in spite of a LOTR in the house, I am not a screaming Stern fan. In fact, if anything, I am usually pretty pessimistic about their new games. I did not have high hopes for POTC as it was being designed by Nordman -- not my fav designer by a long shot. Sure he designed White Water and Indy 500, but he also did Party Animal, Party Zone, Dr. Dude, Scared Stiff (sorry, I don't like it, too easy and shallow), and Demo man (same complaint).
Looking at the video of POTC, I am totally geeked out. That ship is incredible and when you have someone like Korn (who is normally so-so on Stern games) saying it is good, well that's something. Just looking at the layout and all the different things going on (judging by the inserts), I would say this game is going to be great.
This is the FIRST new Stern, I have ever looked forward to just by looking at the pics. Even with LOTR and SPP, I wasn't really that impressed by the pics. They both looked ok, but I had to play them first. POTC works for me. Cann't wait to see one in person
Does anyone know when they are shipping? Might have to take a road trip

Ok. I see your point, but I imagine you, like alot of us, can get excited about a car based on looks. Right? I remember the first time I saw the second generation MR2. I was in the market and we followed the car while it drove looking for a parking spot. We were blown away. What an amazing looking car. Never did get to drive one, but my point is we all agreed we loved the look of the car. Couldn't say a damn thing about the driving, but we knew it was a Toyota so we had a certain expectations.
That's what I am saying with POTC. It looks amazing (in my books) and the toy is incredible. From what others are saying, the play is awesome as well. I believe Keith is doing the programming (correct me if I am wrong) and he did LOTR and SPP, so I am hopeful.
Necro (and others I think), are complaining about the open playfield. Have you played AFM? Very open, but one of the 5 best pins ever made IHO. MB? Again open playfield, but damn fun. Johnny M. again open, but really fun. Even LOTR is pretty open and it's simply awesome. I don't think the open playfield is an issue at all. As long as the rules keep you engaged.
Anyhow, time to go and stop posting My .02 for whatever it is worth.

i have stern pinballs and i do enjoy them. also i do enjoy open playing fields and thats why i enjoy the widebodies. but on machine like this, you expect action. yes the ship is cool and such. but is that the action to the game. no... just a toy to entertain you. i want the machines skill and speed to be the entertainment. watched the video and it made want to play it. not because the game looked skillfull or anything like that. just some cool parts to it. spinning disc again up in the top corner looks good but why up so far away. make it have something more to do with the game. you just shoot it up the ramp and let it go. that what most of this machine seems like. i don't expect it to be a challenge to beat this machine.
now for the comment "I don't buy a car on just pictures and a video...I test drive it...". well there is crap loads we all buy without testing it. its called ebay for one. what none of you have bought a pin or vid without testing it first? come the car reference applies once every few years if that. pins and vids are everyday things to most of us. i would like to think we know what we like and can pick it out. been playing machines most of our lives.
but i will admit that i hope this machine rocks and everybody loves it. gets t.v. press and makes the world a happier place. then all will question where are all the other pins and what happened to arcades? but i don't expect it.
do agree that they missed the boat on date release. this all should have been done and out there in thearter right now. that way people going to watch the movie can experience it a different way. might make higher sales (easily).

Maybe it's not the case for you Mr. Moneybags , but unless the machine is DIRT CHEAP, I "test drive" it to ensure that I like it...
For me, a $300+ purchase is an important one, thus the 'test drive'...
Now...it's true that I once bought a Dirty Harry and 'test drove it'... (OK, OK I think it's not THAT bad...I know where you can buy Hot Dogs)

Agreed. What Stern should do is get some teaser art and stuff from Disney for the third movie (being filmed ATM). Then make the pin with elements of all three films.

moneybags? no way. i just didn't waste my money on buying a house or anything silly like that.
ok maybe you test all you buy. but sometimes to get a real deal you have to commit before you do anything. but i know quite a few on this site that don't test drive most.... how, well i either sold them something or went and picked it up for them. don't know really anybody who really wanted to test the machine before committing to buying it off me> except count for golden tee (hope its up and working now) and twilight zone when he bought my dr.who. but still he committed to that before playing it (but could always back out). but for most real deals there isn't a test drive. just take it away as it is. shoot even starburst doesn't really let you test drive. yes they give you play, but its hard to get inside a machine and check it all out. takes too much time. but at least there you got to play it. but i think most on this site have dealt with ebay or another auction site. shoot just read all the post on what people are willing to trade or find out where can they get POTC for cheapest. hasn't even been released here yet. how is that for a test drive.

AFIK, The third film was shot back to back with the second one. Similar to how they filmed the last two back to the future movies. I would say 80% the principal shots are completed and the bulk right now are being sent to post and CG at ILM. After the reviews of the second movie I figure this film will get a few solid months of editing to ensure the franchise does not end up in Davy Jones Locker.
So if Stern wanted access to movie 3 footage (it would be a new contract) but they would have first dibs on it.
********************************************** For the BG ... I'm kind of glad they decided to just copy the movie poster. The WTP art is fugly IMHO. Most probably it was also easier to take the existing work and just copy it. The actors had already signed off (approved) this composition so it would save all people involved a lot of work and money just to reuse it. I also think it would loose a little appeal to the mass audience had they let an artist draw the bg instead of Photoshop it (going on the previous artwork released by stern).

And.........ABOUT TIME they finally put some good looking MEN on a translite as the main focus
...Now if only Stern would use Ottawa as their 'secret test site'...
I guess my 'Mr. Moneybags' was taken the wrong way...
I should have said this:
Will I ever buy a POTC even if it's the best game since...EVER? Probably not...unless I win the lottery...
So I guess that means I'll stick with the 'poor man's full version'...AKA Black Rose...
