Anyone got a suggestion to safely remove spray paint from plastic?

I have a Rush San Fran edition. The seat has been spray painted with black in a section. I cleaned up the seat last night with magic eraser and it actually started to remove some of the paint. This is a good thing as the paint looked like hell except now it really needs to go. Magic eraser has done all it can do.

I imagine paint stripper would be too hard on the plastic? I don't want to mess up the seat. Except for the black section, it has really cleaned up nicely.

I should mention I already tried Mean Green and it did nothing.

Goof Off should take care of it.

Goof off or take the seat appart remove speakers and use a pressure washer.
With a good degreaser.

You could try a pressure washer.  You should test for which type of paint it is, if you are lucky it is latex and you may be able to judiciously use Goof Off 2 (the plastic safe kind), but as with all solvents, you should test in an inconspicous area first.

You can also judiciously try isopropanol alcohol, naptha or Mineral Spirits (paint remover)with a plastic scrubber, but use carefully. Usually solvents sold in plastic jugs are plastic safe (but not for all plastics), those in cans are not. I have heard of using ammonia and citrus based paint removers to peel paint too, but they normally work on latex paint.

Acetone or nail polish remover if done quickly may work but if left on some types of plastic too long it will begin to dissolve the plastic.

Sometimes laquer sprays will embed themselves in the plastic (because of the solvents they contain) and you will never get it out.  Solvents like acetone, lacquer thinner, vandal remover, etc. may have some effect if the paint is sitting on the surface but may also damage the plastic and make more of a mess.

If you use a harsher solvent then you just want it to touch the paint and then wipe it off so it doesn't sit on the plastic long enough to dissolve it.

Barring those or other methods some may suggest, you may have to sand down and re-paint with Krylon plastic paint to get a "wholesome" look.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll start with Goof Off and see where we go from there.

Websherpa, there is a Goof Off 2? I only know of Goof Off. I have two types: one in a spray bottle and one in a squirt bottle.

Ehtous, change your sig

It says "Gone but not Forgotten", but then you wrote "A few others I forget" So which is it

Duane,

Goof Off 2 may only be available in the States, but it's referanced on the Goof Off Containers.  Try a professional paint store or Home Hardware, they often can order quite a range of chemicals.  http://www.valsparglobal.com/  The regular Goof Off is just a bit harsher on plastics.  But I am guessing Tremclad isn't a latex product, so it's not likely the Goof Off will work very well.
