Pardon my ignorance; can someone let me know if you have a clearcoated playfield with new balls do you still need to wax the playfield. If yes how often.
Current Lineup: Black Knight, Riverboat Gambler, Ripley's Believe it or Not, Flintstones, Orbitor 1, Wipe Out, Breakshot, The Simpsons Pinball Party, Fish Tales, Eight Ball and a 60 in 1 Cocktail.
Being new, it's not going to be that obvious. Trust me, you want to clean and wax on a scheduled basis (if you want to keep your game like new).
I receommend every 3-4 months (depending on play). If you have black rubbers it may need to be done more often. I would surely do it if you have a newer STERN, since the playfields are now stickers rather then silk screened.
Also, if you see debris/dirt on the playfield (usually infront of the flippers), time to clean & wax. Finally, try not to overwax (i.e. be sloppy). Make sure you wipe/buff out all wax off the playfield, otherwise you'll get nasty built-up.
Brand spanking new? If so, I don't bother right away. I'm speaking from HUO experience not NIB experience
What I do is first look for the areas that will receive the most wear and put down the removable mylar one of the pinball parts companies sells -- Medvet can tell you which one, I forget
Then I wax the main area to provide some protection. Once I see the playfield starting to get dirty, I then do a complete tear down.
That said, I only own 2 HUO: TSPP and LOTR. I've had LOTR for at least 4 years and have never done a full tear down. I owned TSPP for one month and did a complete tear down -- in spite of the fact it had already been cleaned once. TSPP seemed to get dirty faster. LOTR not so much.
I do try to wax the easy to reach area every couple of months, though.

Are you talking complete tear down or easy to reach areas? I imagine you are talking common, easy to reach area.
If you do a complete tear down and use white rubber, you really shouldn't need to do a full shop job (in a home environment) for years. I last did my TZ about 11 years ago and it's now ready for a complete tear down again.
That said, as I mention above, I do clean and wax the easy to get areas every couple of months or if I see dirt build up.
Is it an atom? No, it's multiball! Complete MAACA-Wacko!

Just a little comment:
There's nothing more annoying to me than seeing all kinds of wax residue on the posts. Try not to be too sloppy when applying the wax and use a toothbrush (an old one) to remove waxy buildup on bumper posts.

When's the last time you visited the Stern factory?? They still silkscreen their playfields unless they changed in the last 18 months.. Not sure where you got your info from...
