Tempered glass is weakest near the edges, because it can't be fully tempered right to the edge (hence the scallops). Corners are especially vulnerable of bumped against something hard like concrete. Any compressed point of contact (like a key or ice pick) will shatter tempered glass because a small amount of force can be translated into tremendous pressure at the point. (You should always carry a screwdriver in your car if you drive close to rivers, lakes or ponds. Don't bother kicking at the windows with your feet, bash it with a screwdriver or your keys.
I was putting it back on the farfalla , after changing a 3 A fuse and the corner touched the strikes and spares leg , et "VLAN" !!! Like websherpa said , very weak on corners ...

I've heard people describe the noise as a gunshot, or a sonic boom. Was it pretty loud ? Did it make your ears ring ?
My mother broke one of my cab glass panels when I was in Allentown. She didn't know any better and rested the sheet of glass standing up on the cement floor. She said that 3 seconds later she heard a very loud popping sound and glass particles ended up everywhere. She spent the better part of the weekend vacuuming my gameroom. Luckily she wasn't hurt.
Funny thing is that she had trouble describing the end result. when I told her "bucket of diamonds" she was stunned and said that that was exactly it.
In thirty years of collecting and working as a tech (about 15 years at each occupation & criss-crossed) with commercially operated pinball machines, I have only been witness to two shattered pinball glasses. One in a bar fight with a mike stand, (glass busted on an EM Night Rider), and much later on location when I was servicing a Williams FishTales my boss was operating in an STCUM bus driver's depot and garage on Mont-Royal near Iberville. That was the weirdest experience of the two. I was paged for service, and where as upon entering the "joint" you felt that you were in an extremely unruly college rec room of sorts. The drivers were all either sitting around playing cards, dueling & gambling on the chexx hockey, drinking coffee and/or yelling at eachother. So when I showed up to fix the pinball, they naturally gathered round and began telling me what to do. I was trying to get them to shut up as I slid the glass out, looked for a safe place to set it aside when it shattered between my hands for no good reason at all that I can reasonably recall. It felt so freakin`strange to be holding a 5 to 10 pound peice of glass between both hands and suddenly feel the weight just vanish in my grip into a shower of fragments. The loud "POUF" did finally get that rowdy bunch of loudmouths to stop talking for a bit, as I stood there with my hands almost coming together through the thin air left behind from the disintegrated glass. A very strange feeling indeed.
