- cab stripped, gouges and chips fixed and repainted with 3 coats, all oil-based paint - new backbox neck built - bottom of cab repaired (bottom at rear falling out) - coindoor, coindoor railings and legs sandblasted and repainted to original color - new coindoor decals and lock - backglass replaced - siderails replaced - inside of cab sanded - power supply plate sanded - lockdown bar buffed, and locking mechanism sanded and buffed
Do you usually remove the side rails for painting and what's the easiest way of removing the nails? Thanks
I always remove them. I use a small thin prybar to slightly lift the rail and pull the nail out just a bit. Then I use curved cutters to pry the nails out. doesn't matter if wood gets damaged... I just fix it.
It also permits me to get a good paint sample of the original base color to have some paint mixed. The paint under the siderails is not affected by anything.
Well, she is done and working, except for the flippers. Right flippers have the proper voltage and fire when grounded manually, but right button doesn't activate them. I see the 44V at the flipper switch and the other side has continuity with the power supply, so I will have to figure it out.
Left flipper is a no-no as well. Voltage at coil is off, and if I hit the button, it tilts. I also had a big spark the first time out.

Other than that, all OK.
Ask McMean, he might have some tips....he had it up, and running 100%, when I bought it off him.

Yeah... I think that after my playfields in waiting are all done, I will focus on cabs only. Playfields are too much of a pain in the a**, and cabs often get overlooked.
I sometimes use spray cans, but most of the time I use high quality oil-based paint with an HVLP gun or in some cases a foam roller. I NEVER use latex paint. That's just good for walls. I like a paint that can take a beating and be washed easily without fading or rubbing off.
Thanks! I really put my heart into saving these old Sterns. I really have a soft spot for them. and I firmly believe that a nice cab gives it better chances of surviving long term.
DONE!!!! She had her share of issues on the flippers... The right side flippers didn't work due to a weak trace on the solenoid driver board. It sent 43 volt to my multimeter but when there was a current draw from the coils, it went wonky. So I replaced the SDB with a good one and they work.
The left side flippers had the EOS shorted due to solder touching between 2 blades, and the top left flipper coil was shorted out. New EOS and new coil, and she is happy!!!
Can we see pics of the machine, not only the cab!!!
