Hi all,

Picked up Capcom Flipper Football today at Starburst. Playfield and all the mechanicals are mint and aside from a few scuffs on the backbox it is in overall great condition. I am not very familiar with Capcom and am still a rookie overall but here's the issue:

When I launch the ball it immediately registers goal although I haven't put the ball in the goal. When doing a diagnostic check it shows that one of the 6 optos in the goal is stuck open (as if a ball went in the net). When the ball is launched I am figuring at that point it immediately registers a goal from that opto.

This makes the game unplayable and I am somewhat doubtful as to the availability of the send and/or receive unit for that machine as only 750 were made in 1996.

Upon inspection I see that one other led on the send unit appears to have been replaced at some point so these issues may have occurred before. I have ruled out a leak from light from the GI. Disconnecting any of the opto sensors from the switch board automatically registers an open as well so thats not an option.

I am hoping that board repair guy (mindstorm) can do something if I send him both the send/receive units.

Any useful advice would be welcome as this game will be really sweet especially with the profanity settings on when working.

Clean the optos with a q-tip with some rubbing alcohol on it. Or try and blow them clean with a little compressed air. If that doesn't work, you may have to replace the opto. I would try and clean it first though.

Removed them and wiped them off to no avail.  Repair might be only option.

Have located the opto led/receiver set for sale.

What I really need is for someone to give me a suggestion logically how to test whether it is my switch matrix or the opto that is faulty.

I was thinking to check the voltage at the input pin to the switch matrix board header when I  break the beam on the opto on a nfunctioning and then compare to the malfunctioning. If there is a difference, its the opto device. If not, I night need board work.

I played this game at one of the topl events and thought that it was pretty cool and quite different. Not exactly like a traditional pin, but as a collector I could see why it appealed.

Ricker's current lineup;

El Dorado          Flash.                   Royal Flush           Joker Poker
Volley               Pioneer                 Barracora             Black Knight
Meteor             Xenon

If you have a digital camera, you can check to see if the emitter side is working or not, with the machine on, look through your digital cam and you should be able to see the emitters lit up. I use this trick all the time to check optos and remote controls to see if they are even lighting up at all.

You could go through and re-solder all the connections on the board, but if you plan on keeping the game, I would get the Great Lakes boards that Mark posted.
