I'd avoid carpet in basement personally.   I just tends to pickup moisture...

I hear that.  The house we bought closes in about 2 weeks and our first priority is ripping out the carpet the previous owners had goin' on in the basement. The moisture gives off a light musty smell the inspector said would go away if we pulled it out.    

(We're also smashing down a wall which I'm looking forward to very much.)
