So I played Spiderman tonight at Union Station in Toronto.
Only played 3 games on it so its not a comprehensive review by any means, more like a first impression.

The Good:
-Overall art package is nice.  Really like the Back Glass.  Side art is safe and does not make me like or dislike it.
-I like the quality of the villain toys.  If any of you collect McFarlane Spawn figures its around the same level of detail.
-The multi tone display really shines here vs. POTC and you can really see the increased level of detail with this new shading system.  That said I still prefer when an artist works on the dots verses someone dumping clips from the movie and converting them.  Which from what I saw was a large part of the animation.
-The sound has a nice heavy guitar theme ... but I had trouble hearing everything clearly since there was a guitar star/hero being played next to me and it was hard to distinguish between the two.
-Ramps and flow are typical Steve Ritchie Style its got a nice feel to it.

The Bad:
-We knew even before it would be released that some graphics would be pixilated so nothing else to say here.
-Already there is some defect on the game at that location.  On the right entrance to the loop (to the right of DOC OC) there is a gate that has become mal-adjusted and caused the ball to hang every time.  The only way I could free it was to tap the flippers multiple times until the ball dropped.  Was a real pain playing the game this way but what can you do?
-There is a lot of STDM because of the Sandman shot.  If you dont like AFM for this then chances are you will dislike SM as well.

Overall Game play:
Well having played only three games in a noisy arcade with a defect on the PF is not the best environment to judge game play.  But I will say after ignoring the ball hang, I was having a lot of fun nudging the game to try and save it from a Sandman STDM (Think the saucer shot on AFM).  Graphics are nice and bright, the ramps are fun; I would look forward to playing more games on it.

Where does it rank overall?  Its too soon to say   however I think its one of Sterns better examples. That said I have some WMS pins that are ahead on the purchasing queue.

MP,

too bad I didn't know you were going to be there I work across the street. I found the gate sticking to be a problem as well but it did help during the multiball as it left you the option of leaving one ball hanging there to be used later. Unfortunately Union Station is probably the best single arcade left in Toronto for pinball (the other choice would be Funland) but as they mostly have Sterns there can be a large problem with functionality shortly after the machines arrive.
