I've only ever used varathane, the diamond finish stuff.  I just paint it on as thick as I want, then sand it down and then Novus 2 to buff it up and make it shine.

If you don't mind me asking, was this Whizzervic's machine ?

The only real sign of age on a nice Mars Trek is fixed. You now have a new, vintage machine. Very nice!

Polyurethane is the hardest commercial spray paint... I'd use that to protect, but make sure you spray on a non-humid day.

The marine stuff yellows with time.   I believe it'll yellow more than the poly..
