It could very well be the spring if it's the incorrect spring installed.  I had a similar issue with a ToM where the trap door assembly wouldn't kick out the balls correctly because it had an incorrect spring installed. (it was too strong and kept the door assy from reaching max travel)

I'm just saying don't discount the spring yet....

Yea but this assembly acts more like a drop target where the trap door is different in where the coil is energized and the stays energized to keep the trap door up.
