It was the name of the Album and song...

The brown dirt cowboy is lyricist Bernie Taupin. To my knowledge he's straight. I don't think in 1975 people thought about these issues in such a literal sense to read into it that far.

I am sure there was some reason to call him that but I don't think it's the one you may be referring to. Probably portraying himself not being from the big city in the song.



I don't read anything out of the lyrics either that would make me feel there was hidden meaning.
