Just thinking about a trophy I want to build for the Toronto Game Room show tournament, what would be involved to wire up two 555 lamp sockets off a remote battery pack? Would it just be as simple as connecting the wires and turning it on or would it involve wiring resisters or something in line as well? |

Depends on the number of batteries in the pack. a 555 is rated to 6.3V, and standard batteries are 1.5V. You can get away with a 4-pak of batteries no problem wired directly to the bulbs, but how are you going to wire the bulbs up? Series or parallel as that will dictate the voltage to each bulb. Then you could work out the math and figure out how many bulbs you can use and what size batteries to use to get you x amount of hours life.

It would be two bulbs in parallel, one wired into the other and then back to the battery pack. |

You could use a 9 volt and a resistor to modify the voltage, problem is it won't light for very long before the battery would wear out. I think you would be better off building in an LED which draws minimal voltage and lower current. |

If I used 2 of the prebuilt 555 LED's would I still be able to wire the sockets directly into a 4 x AA battery holder? |

There's no difference in wiring if you use LED's. Assuming you're talking about the pinball LED's where they are rated at 6V. Still 4 AA batteries, no resistor, 2 LED's in parallel and it'll last perhaps 10 times longer. Perhaps a switch to turn it off/on.

1$ store LED keychain lights....open them up and you got the batts and resistors already...I know you can figure out the wireing form there Good luck! |

If you're going through the trouble of all this and considering LED's, why not build a small timing circuit around a 555 and have them flash or alternate etc? You could easily run the whole thing off a 9V and it would last a long time.

Why do that, you can buy multicolour LEDs with a micro timer/flasher already built into it. And a tiny little smoke machine...but I digress.... |

Cause I don't know how Also it has to hide easily. My vision at this point is a block of wood on top of a wood base. Cut an angle into the block and then mount 2 flippers, a newton ball and two pop bumpers. Flippers would be mounted with their existing shafts glued right into the wood, same with the newton ball. The pop bumpers I wouldn't bother with the metal ring only the plastic apron and cap and mount them the same way they are mounted onto any PF. I would cut off the stick that hangs threw the PF on the shirt. I would cut 1/2" right off the back of the piece of wood and drill holes for the wire leads for the pop bumpers. Then route out a channel all the way to the base of the trophy and drill hoes in the base for the wires to feed to the bottom of the trophy. Then route out the bottom of the trophy and stick in either a 9v battery pack or 4 x AA battery pack. Then glue the 1/2" piece of wood back on to hide all the wiring. I crudely drew something up in MS Paint to give you an idea of what is in my head.

http://clarkson-uk.com/555%2Dtimer/projects/t-lights.htmlThere is a simple LED timer schematic for you. All you'd need to do is combine the yellow and red outputs together like they do with the green, and you're good to go. Alternatively you could play with the outputs and have the LED's flash together or alternate back and forth etc etc with that circuit depending on how you connect the LED's. You could fit all of that on a tiny bread board and hide it in that trophy no problem. D |

Lol, how bout I build it first and then worry about building a timer circuit board just so I can make the lights flash I thought it was going to be cool enough that the lights turned on |

you know what'd be REALLY cool, is if someone wired some explosives to a knocker.. it'd be like playing Russian Roulette every time you step up to the plate |
