Hi all,

Since I shattered my Barracora backglass I have been considering making a new one. The scarcity of a replacement makes it pretty necessary.

Wondering if anyone else has done this or has heard of this done successfully. Figured I'd take a high pixel photo with slow exposure and no flash (eliminate glare) and touch up digitally. Then get a shop that does transparencies (advertising POP etc) to print. Then on the non-transparent parts I can affix black paper to block light passage. Then mount all this on the correct glass.

Will this work?

There's a good one out there too about printing on paper so as to have a ready, built in white light mask and then he registers a blackout mask over that (And cuts out the score display areas), which the author then attacheds to and sandwiches between two thinner pieces of backglass (the solution was for EMs I think).  I just remember thinking that it was a little less complicated way to go.  Your mileage may vary.  It's recreating the translucent layer mask that seems to cause people attempting this the most pain (or mirrored finish).  But maybe that's not such an issue now with the plethora of large format inkjet printers and media available out there???

dont wast your time with pictures!!! youll get distortion, your score glass will end up cockeyed!

heres the way i've done it before:

-get a scanner and scan all pieces, then with photoshop (or -whatever )stitch everything up.
-get a print shop to print on white translucent vynil
-stick on clear plexiglass
-cover with 1/8 thick glass

does a GREAT job!!

GOOD LUCK!

I'm not sure if Microsoft ICE is the best "stitch" program, but it was relatively easy to use:

Mind, you the panorama of the kids playing in the backyard made them look like cancer ridden dwarfs with odd appendages....

I was thinking of taking some relatively low light images on my wife's high megapixel digital SLR, trying several different light levels and exposure times until I get an image with no glare. Not sure sure about playing with restitching scanned images, photoshop etc. I was hoping I could just use my regular photo editor.
Then take another photo of the reverse side of the glass for the mask. Perhaps if I can get a clear film and literally print the colour of the mask on it. Then stick the vinyl/film sandwiched to the mask, cut out the score windows, etc with an exacto, and tape the layers to a clear piece of glass. I will make sure the channels on the edge hold everything together.

The resolution, DPI etc on the post from Mr Hide will be helpful for sure.

Also, Kirsten (Kia) emailed me regarding a contact in Germany who is quietly doing as described and has already done Barracora. It is not widely offered due to copyright implications. I suppose it could be shipped in a roll like a regular translight. Sadly, with the Euro everything seems to be double what it is in North America but hopefully that will save me some time.

Thanks for so much useful input. I will definitely post the eventual results.

The description sound quit good. Maybe the translation from a German portal is an additional help. By chance it was for a Barracora  . The friend confirmed that it is OK to port and translate the material to this platform.
