I like Mcafee which isn't free but really nothing can really protect your machine from viruses and spyware.

The programs are able to protect you to a degree but you still have to be smart about your web surfing habits or you are just asking for trouble.  I have never had a problem with Spyware or Viruses because I keep to specific web pages I know, never ever click on a link you get in email from someone you don't know, never open unknown attachments, and stay off the Porn sites.

I've had my home machine running 6 years now and have not had a single virus/spyware problem.

None of the free antiviruses are good . I use avast in the past and it let all come in , shure it detect viruses but it canot remove any because when you reboot they all come back to life . You must purchase a liscense antivirus to be effective . there is a good store in quebec on the boulevard Masson at the bouleverd Hamel junction called misys I got bitdefender it is complete with internet security you can get it oem 40 $ and then you can add spybot it is a software to clean your cookies and some spyware and it is free for downlad you must use both , finaly if you realy want top security since you have two computer it would be a good thing to add router I prefer a normal one no wifi ( because I am not good with config ) this will act as a hardware firewall for your computer and is worth about 30-40 $ this is what I have done and it solve my computer problem another good advice is to be carefull with the peer to peer download and especialy avoid porn xxx download these are the two mainsource of all the bad thing you can get to your computer

This site has a good list of free programs:

I've been using it for years with no problems.

I personally have used ESET's lean, mean NOD32 for the past 2 years after becoming disillusioned with Norton's Bloated Product.  Works extremely well (not a single problem since installing it), and it doesn't take up resources - reasonable cost.

I used to use AVG and found it quite good, until version 8.  Now they have all this extra bloat and they now chew up excessive bandwidth with their HTML link checker.  (for an explanation: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/13/avg_scanner_skews_web_traffic_numbers/).  They are trying to do too much for everyone now and in the end, I had to remove it.  It became useless to me.

I have switched to AntiVir (Avira) which is ok.  The only issue is that it loads a pop up, every time it updates.  This is a pain since it happens everyday.  Of course, with a bit of know-how, you can kill it.     You can google the answer... here is one such tutorial: http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-the-Popup-Ads-in-Avira-Antivir

And there is Spybot, which also has something resident in memory to scan for spyware. (But the most important thing to me, is to not use Internet Explorer.  Anything is better, like Firefox or Safari, to help reduce spyware).

Oh.... and stop surfing porn.

Avira's what I use, too.   A bit of a pain, but free is good.

I agree. A horrible application that does not work, slows your system to a snails pace, takes over and doesn't uninstall thoroughly without a lot of issues.

I use Prevx CSI. It ain't cheap but it works great, finds stuff Norton and McAfee miss and is super fast at scanning. Norton couldn't find Ebola on an infected cadaver.

If your just trying to eliminate Adware and Spyware, use Spybot Search and Destroy. It's free.

Windows Vista comes with "Defender" which I was hoping was the game but is a spyware program that doesn't seem to be very effective from my experience with it.
