I had someone over to look at my RFM yesterday and they noticed that at somepoints the GI lights in the back of playfield would flicker, which made the video a bit more difficult to see. Upon further inspection, this occurs during some modes, but not others.

During Mars Happy Hour, Paris in Peril, and Mars Kneads Women, the GI lights in the back turn off (like they're supposed to) when the ball is not in the pop bumper area.

During Alien Abduction, Secret Weapon, and Big-O-Beam the GIs in the back flicker once the ball leaves the pop bumpers. While the ball is in the pop bumpers, the area is fully lit like normal.

I also noticed that the 'target/missile' inserts also flicker once the game is started (not during attract).

I've gone into diagnostics and have tried lighting single lamps, rows, and columns and have been unable to reproduce the flicker. It only happens during gameplay.

Why would this happen only in certain modes? What could cause this?

My guess would be the software is causing this...

Really? If so, does anyone else with RFM v1.5 have this problem?

I just checked. V1.5 on Secret Weapon, I could see the upper right lamp flicker.

This can't be right, did I seriously just find a major bug that has gone unnoticed for 11 years?

Technically it was the dude who was looking to buy your machine that found it.

Is it possible to disable the software update and then re-enable it? It'd be interesting to try an older version of the software, but I don't want to have to reupdate using my computer and null modem cable.

I don't think so.

I have to ask... why do you care?  You never noticed it before (nor did I).  Or is this some sort of quest for the ultimate truth?  Isn't Tglover still running v1.0?  Maybe ask him to see what happens.

Now that I've seen it I can't unsee it

I obviously don't care since I'm selling it but whoever buys it might care. I don't want to sell a game with a problem that can be fixed.

Now some idiot can offer to buy it for cheap to relieve you of your quest?       Is that why the guy who spotted the flicker didnt take it? Or was it just that he thought your price needed to EXTREMELY negotiable due to the flicker.

Maybe the flicker is always on all of them and he knew this and uses it to buy machines for cheaper than actual value.

I too would ask one of the other owners to check theirs. Necro Nemesis has a really nice one too. Between him and TGlover you will find out soon.
