Anyone know of a good flat scanner with which I could scan a cab or playfield easily, and know where to get it? I have been to many stores and all the scanners I have seen have lids that don't come off completely.
I'll check tonight and if the lid comes off mine you can have it free. I now use a multi-whatever-thingy with the built-in scanner.
The scanner is 8.5" X 11". USB. I think it's a AFGA Scantouch. It's a good scanner I just have no use for it now.

Would that be a SnapScan Touch? If so I have one and it works great. The lid does come off by the way. but if you gonna use it just for that then cut the lid off whichever one you get!!
It's yours. Lid comes off as Macphreak mentioned. Just find a way for it to get to you!

I can see only one problem and that is getting all the images straight when doing multiple scans of a larger surface. Unless you have some sort of guide that the scanner can lean on to ensure it's always on the same angle, each image will be off. It is possible, just takes time and patience.

I use an HP Scanjet 4670. They are no longer made but you can get them on eBay occasionally. They work very well, I was thinking of getting a spare. The Panorama Software that comes with it won't handle the kind of file sizes you need to do a whole cabinet size so you pretty much have to work in Photoshop. In order to assist alignment, other than using a drafting square, I tape a small scale to the scanning surface so that it is always scanned with the image. You still have to play with the alignment if not using a ruler, but having the reference helps.

I will stick to inserts for now, but cabs are easy... I clamp on a straight-edge on the bottom and lean the scanner against it.

Thanks Mike! I might come up this Sunday for the meeting, but my son had 101 fever last night, so if he still feels crappy, I will go another time.
Besides... I am trying to save up to take your 6MDM. Once I get some jobs done and income comes in, I might take it off your hands and finish that project off.

I have tried many times to get a 4670, but everytime one pops up on Ebay, it goes for over 100$... crazy for an old scanner...
