I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good place for breakfast in Ottawa? Just thinking I might like to try something different. I'm thinking center of the city to the west.

In the west end, I normally go to Chances R by Algonquin and it's great. Just done it so much, I'd like to find another spot.

Downtown, I've always liked Zak's. I'm a sucker for diner.

I don't like Corra's. Way over priced for what you get, IHO. I know alot of people love it. I'm just throwing it out there, so I don't get a bunch of people saying "Corra's"

I'm looking for a place I can sit with a client or business associate and have a decent breakfast and chat.

Any ideas appreciated.

Finally! Someone else who hates Cora's? That place is awful.

Try Kettlemen's on Carling, near Carlingwood. Not fancy, but they make great bagel sandwiches. I personally like Denny's though

My wife goes to Rockwell's in Merivale Mall every week.   Good service; some bench seats and good non-greasy breakfast (well greasy, but not tooooo greasy).

I'm not a big fan of Cora's either and I don't even live in Ottawa, and yet I always see a crowd when I go to Jim's.

I love Zaks as well.

"Donna's Express" at the corner of Churchill and Scott is pretty good.

I also like the Royal Oak (in the Glebe on Bank). But I haven't been there in a long while.

I agree with the assessment of Cora's - terrible, overpriced and bad service. I do not understand the lineup.

EggSpectations (Bank and Laurier) was good but I heard it is closed. Not sure if it is true.

Pins owned:
Bally - Twilight Zone (1993)
Williams - Star Trek The Next Generation (1993)
Bally - Scared Stiff (1996)
Stern - Lord of the Rings (2004)

I second Donna's.

I used to live at Somerset and Elgin. My wife and I always went to Dunn's on Elgin for breakfast. We only went because it was practically next to our apartment, but I never had any complaints about their food/service/prices. In fact, it was pretty good, now that I think of it.

Of course, I always got breakfast at the Parliamentary cafeteria too, but you need to work there to get in.

I can second Rockwell's, I've had lunch there many times and the food is decent.

I've been meaning to have a breakfast at Broadway's, heard good things.

Broadway's is pretty good, kid friendly place too.  I eat breakfast at the Barley Mow in Barrhaven regularly but they only serve it on the weekends.

In Barrhaven, Greenfield's make a good breakfast. Lots of food. Fair prices. Close to HGWY 416 for those coming in from T.O..As I understand, there has been a change in ownership and the place has been spruced up.

Thanks for the great suggestions, folks. Going to have to think carefully about the next place I go to.

I was really surprised by the number of people that agree with me that Corra's sucks. I always get a strange look when I tell that to most folks. Same expression I get when I say Tim Horton's sucks -- which it does. I don't know how Tim Horton's has become viewed as Canadian as a beaver playing hockey. They make a terrible brew. Cheap, but terrible.

I know that Greenfield's changed owners in 2006 and it seemed like they were going to run it into the ground.  The prices went up around 15% and they turned the pool/darts room into a stage for kid bands (you know, the ones who are not allowed to drink and all their friends are too young to be in there after 9:00pm).  I used to go there regularly but the changes they made really turned me off.

It's a lot better then the crap they serve at other fast food places.  Of course if you prefer to pay 5$ a cup you can always go to Starcrooks and get their over priced flavoured tap water.

yes! Tim Hortons DOES suck! I am depressed every day thinking of how crappy their donuts are compared to Dunkin Donuts and even donuts from indy places like Gopher Donuts.

I remember when a couple years ago someone complained to Tim Hortons that they got a smaller donut at one location and Tim Hortons responded by saying that they'll try to ensure that all their locations produce the smaller sized donut more consistently. Tim Hortons sucks!

For cheap coffee try McDonald's. Honestly, it actually quite good and consistent from location to location.

I agree Starbucks is way over priced. That's why I buy fresh roasted coffee and expresso. I only do a French press for coffee and I have an expresso machine for lattes. The best coffee is at home and, thankfully, I work at home

When I'm on the road, I'll hit McDonald's. If I want to spend a bit more Second Cup or Timothy's both do a decent coffee that isn't too expensive. When I visit client's, I'll bring Horton's. It better to be appreciated than right
