I have a couple of pins with insert decal damage. What do you use to replace these? Let me know... I intend to clearcoat them so I need to know what works and what doesn't.
All of a sudden decals are everywhere! I found and bought some for STTNG and Scared Stiff, and have seen them for TOM, IJ, TAF, CP, TOTAN, etc...it looks like the guy with the rights in AUS is getting busy.
The decals are made by Jeff from Classic Arcades and resold thru various suppliers and private collectors. You have to watch it tho as some of his are just printed on top of thin mylar and some are mylared on top of the printing. If you apply the decals you have to scrape and sand off all the art that was silk screened onto the insert (ALOT of work believe me!) and then prep and then apply the decal. It is always strongly suggested to clearcoat over the decals as the non protected ones will be destroyed with cleaning and wax. The protected ones may also get damaged from dirt/wax getting under (think sticker, mylar lifting etc).
I also have a few sets for various games but have opted so far to repair the insert lettering with paint and spot clearcoat over my touchups as I'm usually doing other art areas on the playfield also (the joys of sys 11 ).
Sparky can I ask a question, not intending to hijack here, but I am very curious...
When you say insert wear, are you talking about the actual insert wearing out, or is it clearcoat (diamond plate in my case) that is worn out, or wouldn't i know the difference just by looking?
What I hvae happening on the T-2 is some wear (which looks like a sticker wore off to me) on the edges of some of the inserts. I wouldn't think this is actual insert wear, but I'm also not sure how these things are assembled. Does it go Insert, decal, diamond plate, or is the insert/decal all one thing?
I apprecaite the knowledge. I'm asking purely for my own insanity. Good luck with your project.

"Time to assume the position, if you know what I mean."
Well, I want to do a quick repair on Space Invaders (just 2 inserts a bit worn), and Heavy Metal Meltdown. No DiamondPlates.
The ones on HMM are decals that have worn with time, and I am positive that no one ever made a set for this particular pin. I saw the auctions by Kaweaver with all of Jeff's old stuff, but looks like I am on my own.
This being said, if any of you ever saw the last TOP tape (#8, for bowlers), at the end they say that the next video will show how to do your own decals...
My playfield is super nice, but just has some decal wear on the inserts, and I plan on clearcoating it next week...
FWIW, here's a photo-blog of a BK2K restoration that addresses decaling inserts. Very interesting and may be of some help to you. It's by some guy named Hutchins
...I know I have to sand the old finish off of the inserts. My question is what to use to make the decals, i.e. specific paper, printer, scanning methos and recreation, and such.
Clearing over inserts for me is not a problem... In fact, for the insert thickness due to the decal, take a few minutes to lower the inserts in the playfield once the decals are applied in order to get back the original flatness.
If you have a good digicam with a macro mode just snap pics and then vectorize them.
