Well I picked up Jim Popeye.
This machine is really nice playfield but has many issues.

1)The MPU has acid damage that stops the lights on playfield like lock ect from lighting up but general lights work??? There a project for Bruno.

2)The other problem is that the jet switch is not working so balls are not registering properly so you can end up playing with 2 balls.

3)Naturally the opto board needs a little work.

4)The display board needs 2 new caps because it takes about hours for the DMD to work perfectly.

5)The board needs all new fuses the op that had this machine should be shot because all the fuses have wires solder on them because all the fuses are blown!!!!!!!!!

6)The free game knocker is disconnected and cant seem to find where it connects to.

7)There are 2 other connectors at the opto board that are not connected and dont belong there so not sure what there for.

2 broken plastics and one sticker needs replacing.

9)new mouldings for translite needed because it all broken

10)new translite needed because there actually wear in some spots but that is me being anal

11)fix the DMD mounting clamp on the left hand side.

12)change the power cord because I don’t like the black tape splice on it me being anal again.

13)Fix the back of the machine so I can use the head holding clamp.

14)Glue the front of the cab. It is not noticable on the pictures because one of the legs cover it but it is actually seperated at the corner. So a bit of glue and astraps should fix that.

Lets say this machine is a very big project but some things are easy fixes some will require allot of research.
Also allot of patience but worth it.

Hi All.
I have a few questions on what to do.
My playfield is pretty nice a few flaws and scratches on Popeye and there and Mylar patches here are the pics.

I am trying to figure out what to do.
I was offered a Nearly new Playfield for a good price half populated.
Wondering what to do because the Mylar patches are starting to lift and want to remove it but take the chance of removing paint.
I am no artist and worried I could damage it.
There is a few good scratches on popeyed face that are not really deep but you notice them.
But the playfield that is there Is still very nice considering.
Wondering what would do

Just use the freeze spray method for remiving the mylar.  I've done it tons of times (in front of Mark's eyes even) without issue.  Just make sure you use enough spray, the mylar should pretty much fall off when you pull it up.  If it gives you any resistance stop pulling and apply more freeze spray.

The only way paint will lift is if it's already lifted off the PF and stuck to the mylar, or of you don't freeze it enough and you pull to hard.

Ethous,

I took a good look at the Popeye and, if I recall correctly, the scratches are noticeable in the centre around Olive Oyl (think that' show they spell her name). I think the mylar was added afterwards. If you remove the mylar, those scratches may get worse -- over a long, long time. You might want to remove the mylar and touch up the scratches as there aren't many and then apply another mylar or do a clear touch up (PM Medvet on how to do that, she did a great job on her ST:TNG).

In terms of buying the other playfield, only you can decide that. If you do go that route, do it because you love the game and want to keep it. Not to be a downer, but Popeye isn't super collectible so I don't think it will change the value of the game one way or another.  Also, keep in mind a playfield swap isn't easy. If it was me, I would just touch up the area and re-apply mylar then enjoy the game

Good luck,
Duane

This project gets better and better every time
I only found 6 fuse that where not patched and blown on the board and 3 connectors that started to melt.
Also there are 2 connectors that where cut and spliced and bypassed now have to figure out what they where
I have to figure out the connectors before I place boards back after Bruno is done with them

4)The display board needs 2 new caps because it takes about hours for the DMD to work perfectly.

Not sure about that , usually when this happen , it's the DMD reaching end of life !!!!

I then replaced it and same thing blows again????
But decided to let it go every 10 to 15 seconds the flipper would flip cant figure out where the problem is.
Any ideas.

first look here: http://marvin3m.com/wpc/index1.htm

maybe your br5 is bad or check all motors and optos for ground problems

F116: 3 amp slo-blo. Before bridge BR5. +12 volt unregulated power for opto light, motors, power to some dot matrix displays (brand dependant), etc.

Looks like you are doing a good job fixing up the Popeye.

Is odd though as the majority of people rip the machines apart for parts for other machines. I saw one in Montreal which was in mint shape (cab, playfield, all plastics, etc) but the guy still ripped it apart as it wasn't worth much and no one wanted it. I never played it but I am told the vast majority of people say it is a really bad game. I guess it is all about personal taste.

Good luck on the project

Well It is not one of my favorites but it is ok.
My wife likes it thats what counts.
I find that even tho the machine is complete crap they all need the love.
Plus gave me experience of a complete tear down of 2 playfields and rebuild one.
Very messy job mind you and allot of patients.
I would of loved to do a pinbot or something like that.
But that was what available.

Troubles Trouble and More Trouble.
Well I changed my BR5 bridge turned on the machine wow it alive.
But all my lights are off but the GI running lights.
Ok that's the old problem that I thought Bruno fixed.
I said what ever.
Decided to start a game wont eject ball or flippers don't work.
I went o yeah I close the door.
Well here we go all my dam coils activate and keep working and my flippers fuse up.
Great I said.
checked all my wiring it correct.
I even made sure with Anthony machine who was really nice to send me some pics.
then tested all fusses one blew in fliptronics replaced it.
tried again same problem.
So I am all frustrated figured when I rewired my pf I fucked up all the wiring.
Took Jims Fish Tales MPU and Fliptronics board to test mine.
Place it in the machine close my eyes and flip the switch turns on no coils go off
So wiring is fine whoohoo all the Lights work 100%%%
Bonus I said start a game all works but one target that's fine can fix it.
Then while I was testing that My DMD died
I am like ok figured that could happened.
Tried the one from street fighter and it works so DMD is really Dead.
Then decide ok lets make sure place the mpu and fliptronics back in flippers and all coils go off.
So something is fucked..............
Thanks god I have patients and I know allot of people said place a match in it but after all the work I refuse this machine to win.
So I sent Bruno email hope he has any ideas.
Really pisses me off to have a nice playfield new balls all waxed and I cant play it after all the work well unless I place jims boards back but can only use them till Friday.
Then they need to go back.

Glad to hear you're making progress, but this is why you should have the game working 100% before swapping PF's.  This way you know exactly where to look and what to check when things don't work after a swap.

That and when the new PF goes in you should be able to start playing it right away.
