Interesting question. On the Topcast interview of Tim Allen, from the LasVegas Pinball Museum, there was some discussion of that. In his arcades in Michigan in the mid 70's they collected enough to pay for a decent game in just a few weeks. By the early 80's the big collections were in the classic Midway and Williams video games, way higher than pinball had done previously.
He said they always stuck with pinball because he liked it, but again he made most of his profits from video. Then around 82/83 video crashed until a few years later when the Street Fighter games came along. He then lost his taste for the business as he didn't care for the violent nature of the fighting games and the big driving games didn't excite him.
When he sold out in the late 80's the fighting and driving games continued to do well. And of course pinball had another decent run from the early 90's for a few years too.
I think a decent Bally probably took in several hundred a month in the early 80's.
