100% support what was written. I don't mind a good picture now and then but I let my fingers do the search. I believe MAACA should remain neutral since we have a wide array of taste and expectations. Don't worry my friend you are not alone and I am glad you spoke up.

I work in a classroom, and often have to scroll quickly over various members posts (i.e. bouncing boobs, naked girls playing pinball) and I would be pretty upset if MAACA gets blocked at my work because of it
Most of the time MAACA is open at work, I will feel very bad with some avatar, that people can see. I hope also that my little daughter at home don't ask to much quetion about it.

As ken pointed out, it's a user option, just select it if you don't want to see them...avatars and signatures. It was the signatures that did it for me, a 1/4 screen signature is a bit much in my mind.

I don't agree with censorship, there are plenty of options to censor things yourself. It's not like the avatars are X rated, if you don't like it, there are numerous means to do something about it yourself.

I guess you take this too much at heart. Sorry if we insult you by reading MAACA during lunch time! The at work thing is only used as an example. I stand by what I said whether at home or at work. Nobody has to do anything if they don't want to, the question was asked and I answered it. I don't want to remove the avatars since I like seeing them. Some are funny etc.
And you are absolutely right that if I don't like it I can always not read it at work but it is for me to decide.
#1 - At work: I made a point to mention DURING BREAKS . Why is it viewed wrong to access Maaca during my lunch break? FYI, I am paid 7.5 hours and I'm at work for 8. I am not paid for my lunch time, thus why I don't feel any guilt here.
#2 - Adjusting avatar option. This is a very valid response; my answer? Didn't even know the option was there! In saying that, I don't believe my question is necessarily wrong, Avatar's are cool and add personality to the site and it's a pity I would have to remove all due to a couple.
#3 - adblock: Unfortunately, many of us have work pc's hooked to a closed network system with IE as our browser. We can't install any add-ons, so this isn't a solution for us. Good suggestion though.
My intent is not to pick on anyone for their choices; its primary purpose was to respond to a PM I received stating "you are the only one who complained" and therefore assuming since no one else is, then it's not a problem. I'm sure the sender is telling the truth, no one else has voiced their concerns. But I attest this does no mean "no one cares" and this thread is put forth to question the membership and see how they feel. That's it in a nutshell.
P.S. your "adult" avatars don't make you cool/interesting/edgy, despite what you may think

Free speech: let's get something straight; there is no such thing as free speech. I can't go out in the middle of the street and start spouting hate retoric without some kind of "payment", either by a punch in the mouth or depending on the words, a trip in court. The only thing that's free is "thinking". Although I used to be an admin of a website a long time ago that was geered towards a PG rating, I also fought long and hard to respect other people's opinions and am a believer that the less censorship takes place, the happier generally speaking members are. This is not about making this an anticeptic site, it's about discussion and bringing forth comments.
I do not know where this is heading but I do know there are some that think "no one cares about Avatars being risque". I ask all of you, after these quick responses, can anyone reading this thread still think the same?

Guys, this topic is going to get nowhere in a hurry. Everyone will have differing opinions on the subject, that's just a fact of life.
If anyone has issues with peoples personal avatars, they have the tools at their disposal to fix the problem. I think it's pretty selfish to ask someone to change their avatar just because I find it offensive, especially when I have the means to disable it in my profile.
So this topic is moot. If you don't like certain members avatars, disable them in your profile. Or, if you only want to block certain members avatars, install FireFox and learn how to use adblock.

I find this to be a 1 ended kind of discussion. If one has an opinion like mine, they're wrong and that's that. Isn't going to keep me from voicing mine though, I've always been one to not care if someone else doesn't like my opinion.
I turned off the avatar display years ago (...I even forget what mine looks like ... ).
I think people should be able to use whatever avatar they want providing it's not illegal or grotesque (...although even that is subjective ).
The most "disturbing" avatar I've ever seen on this site was that kid with the face full of snot (...can't remember who use that, but it really made my stomach turn...)
As for browsing at work, I say all bets are off... Sure, you can be on your break, but you are using company resources.
Besides, in this day of Firewalls and Internet spying, your employer can easily find out what pictures you're looking at, even if it's only a small avatar, it could trigger pRon filters, ...and that's not good...

Break time eheh: Subpacket: Un bon point, mais la demande est de ce censurer soi-même, aucune fois que j'ai demandé aux admins de Maaca de censurer qui de soit. Je n'ai fait uncune plainte à aucuns admins d'aucun avatar. Ceci n'est que 1) demander de considérer que dans certains cas, c'est peu être pas approprier et 2) on m'a dit que ceci n'était pas un problème puisque personne n'avait fait une pleinte.
Sur le #1, j'ai appris qu'il y a une solution vis-a-vis les options du board. Sur le #2, projet accomplis, on voit que ce n'est pas juste un ou deux qui préfère ne pas les voirs.
J'ai aussi demandé si possible de considérer d'ajouter NSFW sur des threads qui ne sont pas approprié; ce n'est pas une censure mais plutôt un mode d'identification. Aucune censure.

I didn't get a chance to read the last 5 pages cause I didn't want to . Could someone summarize where we are at and what the problem is. Personally I think it's Sparky's forum, and the minute he asks me to change my avatar I will. Since I am a member of probably 40-50 different online forums, covering everything from electronics to automotive repair to FTA receivers to kite flying, and I use the same login and the same type of avatar, I have learned that you can turn off being able to see avatars and you can even sometimes 'block' posts by certain users (sometimes). The general concencus is that as long as there is no nudity most administrators will allow it. Not all, mind you, but most. Those that don't usually send a polite pm and ask you to remove and/or change it. I have always found that 'colourful' avatars enhance some of the enjoyment of reading the forums. Have you seen the 'ads' that show up on your web page if you use rogers (yahoo) webmail. They had a picture up there on Monday (of I think Beyonce) wearing an outfit that was way more inappropriate to be seen at an office than seeing a few 'bouncing boobies'. I guess I should dispatch an email to Rogers to stop allowing their 'In the Spotlight' section to have such pics. Oh wait, I can turn that off. Guess I don't have to send an email after all. So you blocked it after finding it offensive, but in looking at it to decide it was offensive, it ended up in your temp files which someone may have an interest in looking at.
I agree with the original post. I would rather see something creative related to the hobby than something that is there for shock factor. IMHO it's not shocking and simply inappropriate for the nature of the forum.

I find this answer so frustrating. I imagine I have no right to search the net during my UNPAID lunch time? It's on my time, the resources to the network are negligeable and I put in about 5 hours minimum of my own time every friggin week and don't charge OT. I don't have a problem with the answer that's come up such as "disable Avatars", it's not ideal (see thread for example) but it works so that's fine.
But since you yahoo's are so gung up on work, let's say I access this site from my sisters because there's a pin that interests her and her 10 year old daughter is sitting next to her. Does that make a damn difference to your answer? I guess not, because it is still my problem...

I figure I have to throw my 0.02 in as the minority (female that is ) I lived thru the centrallica avatars of 5 years ago and never found them offensive. In fact I countered with my own of the male version. However I agree wholeheartedly with Loafer. I think remembering that alot of us surf on laptops now with young kids in visual range should at least be thought of before choosing avatars. I will admit to shutting the lid quickly on the laptop when my young son is sitting beside me but to be honest as both a mom and female collector, I don't really mind bouncing boobies, no matter whose wife they are . But I do find naked females on pinballs in poor taste. Go to a Porno site if you want to see that. Put them into bikinis at least. My original thinking was to see if it's an issue with some because silence was deemed acceptance, and the reality is this isn't always the case.

Personally I think it's Sparky's forum, and the minute he asks me to change my avatar I will. Since I am a member of probably 40-50 different online forums, covering everything from electronics to automotive repair to FTA receivers to kite flying, and I use the same login and the same type of avatar, I have learned that you can turn off being able to see avatars and you can even sometimes 'block' posts by certain users (sometimes). The general concencus is that as long as there is no nudity most administrators will allow it. Not all, mind you, but most. Those that don't usually send a polite pm and ask you to remove and/or change it. I have always found that 'colourful' avatars enhance some of the enjoyment of reading the forums. Have you seen the 'ads' that show up on your web page if you use rogers (yahoo) webmail. They had a picture up there on Monday (of I think Beyonce) wearing an outfit that was way more inappropriate to be seen at an office than seeing a few 'bouncing boobies'. I guess I should dispatch an email to Rogers to stop allowing their 'In the Spotlight' section to have such pics. Oh wait, I can turn that off. Guess I don't have to send an email after all. Forget all that I said. Go back to regular forum browsing.

My intent is not to pick on anyone for their choices; its primary purpose was to respond to a PM I received stating "you are the only one who complained" and therefore assuming since no one else is, then it's not a problem. I'm with Loafer, I've almost said the exact same thing a couple times but was too polite.
Too many responses to read through them all tonight, but I have to agree that the adult-oriented "boobies" avatars are distracting, usually offensive to some (I cringe), possibly juvenile and not really appropriate. I have nothing against those using them, they are great people, but I suggest some self censorship should be exercised here by mature adults to support the majority.
Afterall, I doubt anyone here would feel comfortable if I started using a bouncing penis for my avatar.

Wow...I have never scene a pornographic avatar and quite frankly I like the creativity shown in many of the avatars. The reality is that every avatar that is being complained about can be on the front of a magazine in the local store like Maxim and Cosmo. To top it off many tv channels have far worse things and messages. (Family Guy for one.) I do not think anyone would object to a picture of Peter as an avatar. The reality is that people should have freedom to have any image as there avatar as long as it is not illegal.
If you get in trouble at work then don't do it or find a way to turn the screen or tap a piece of paper to your monitor on the left hand side. In other words think about a simple solution to your problem. People deserve the right to be themselves. This is a pinball and arcade website and let's be realistic sexuality, alcohol, violence and gambling are all themes promoted by the hobby.
If you are worried about your kids...don't they are going to see this images and quite frankly it is an opportunity to talk to your kids about sexuality, the other topics, and the reality in the world. They will be better protected understanding what is being shown if explained by there parent than being sheltered and then learning from a classmate or the TV.
I can not stand censoreship. I for one like some avatars and not others, just like I like some threads and not others. If I don't like it I don't look at it or I do not read it.

This is a true statement, however I have worked in an office and I hated the politics so I made the decision to find a career that worked for me. I also have a baby and he will grow up. He will see my las vegas macine and other pinball images. Many children see these images at very early ages out in public, on tv, or on the internet. If you don't beleive this you should really re evaluate this. As such you should take any and all opportunities to speak with your children about your personal belief system. The beauty is that you can phrase the conversation to the age of the child.
A colleague of mine was showering and his 4 year old daughter came in the bathroom and started playing twenty questions. She asked what's this and he said my knee, and so on and so on. The little girl did not stap the game and blush or giggle when he said penis, she just kept going up the body. My point is that children have no predisposition to these concepts and teaching them the language and your take on why it is in public is a great opportunity.
I hope you all understand I am not suggesting you start talking about intercourse with you three year old, just let them know a little bit about your beliefs. I would likely tell a young child that sexuality is an adult activity and some adults but not all like pictures of the opposite sex; moms like pictures of men and men like pictures of women. Your child will likely get bored and ask whats for lunch...come on Hanna Montanna is probably ok and let's be real...Miley Cirus is turing into a bite of a hollywood party girl. Your kids are going to mimic this behaviourunless you have conversations about it. Cartoons have sexual context all the time and at some point kids will figure it out. Not to mention gambling and drinking that are entrenched in our society. Any opportunity to communicate with children is a great opportunity to give your side and to educate. It is the responsibility of a parent to raise thier children, this includes preparing them for the real world and not sheltering them from the bad. I know parents that won't take thier kids to grandma and grandpa's because the house is not kid proofed...the same house they grew up in???? Sure put a helmet on your kid when they ride a bike but don't stop them from riding it because they might break a leg or see teenagers making out in the park.
I will state once again that these images are everywhere. Take the avatar of karmatose, a kid would probably laugh. They will think it was something stinky, they have no idea that it sexual in any way. It is the adult brain that sees the bad, the kids brain does not go there.
At any rate in the end it is up to you where, what and when you look on the computer and it is up to you where and when and what you discuss with your children. I would encourage you all to step back though and realize that nothing on this site should is really bad. Take that Fred kid that children go to all the time, that is bad. I think you are missing my point, this kind of image gives you the opportunity to explain to the kids how wrong it is to objectify women. I by no means trying to suggest what you say just that you can say what you feel falls within your moral fibre.

I haven't replied seriously to this thread until this point. I've always had trouble with the word "objectification" being used too strongly. Woman are beautiful and have been adored through the ages. I grew up Italian...you wouldn't know it to look at me... and in our house were marble statues of topless woman -- I'm talking the classic stuff here Anyhow, I grew up seeing this and it didn't bother me in the least. We also had art books full of pictures of Italian art work -- most nude. Again, no issue, it was around the house since I was little.
I really don't have an issue with tasteful display of the female form. Same could be said of the male form -- no bouncing penis please That said, do I feel bouncing boobs are tasteful? Not really. The last time I had them I was remembering them from a 5 star restaurant in Vancouver and thought to make some myself. Even de-skinned and soaking for hours, they left such a bad swamp water taste in my mouth that I get nautious even thinking about it (like drinking sour milk). Stick to chicken.

I hear ya. The supermarket stuff out here is definitely not the best grade you can get. They save the good stuff for the restaurants. Lobster however, has no grades, just sizes!

A bit of a repeat message but with all the irrelevant posts, it's hard for a new reader of this most excellent thread to get what is being asked. Still, read the first post in the thread, you will see no one is asking to sensor Avatars, it's self-sensor and there is a difference. For example, if someone were to create a new thread that said "check out this naked chick on a pin", whether or not one agrees this is ok, at least you get fair warning, so you can decide to not click on it if it's your cup of tea. With Avatars, you do not get that choice. Someone could have posted a for sale ad for selling Cabbage Patch Dolls and if someone posted in that thread that has a risque avatar, a G rated thread becomes an instant push.
Thankfully, as I learned, we can turn off Avatars. This is too bad though, as 99% of the users don't have risque Avatars and many have funny Avatars that adds personality to the particular member, and so I lose out. But at least someone who is concerned with this can turn it off so that's cool.

the starting point on this was the viewing of this site during breack at their work, some of their collegues think its a porn site, so those guys do not want to have problem with their boss. They did not know that thay could turn off all the avatar, now that we all know there is no need for censoreship, we can censor wathever we want in our setting.

It's about choice, and the people who are around you may not appreciate what is displayed when viewing a "for sale" pin. It was PRIMARILY a request to a member asking "can you tone down the fully naked chick on the pin" avatar because if ever my network PC is audited, people will think I'm surfing a porn site. Finally, as this member implied I was the only one with the problem since no one else had complained, I asked, pure and simple, I asked if I was the only one. From the comments in the thread, it appears I am not. Now that people know I am not the only one, everyone can make their own decisions as to what to use; mission accomplished in the area of communication.
Killing all Avatars is overkill since 99% are ok, and in fact aside from being funny also add personality to the membership, but at least there is a choice. The ultimate solution would be to be able to disable only certain members avatars (you know, similar to the "ignore" function, but only for avatars. BUt I don't believe such an option can be implemented. Still, even that option isn't perfect, since that option is only used once you've seen something risque, which means its after the fact.
Unfortunately, a lot of great pros' and cons' pov's have been expressed but the danger of the thread turning into a pizza sillyness forum has meant those new to the thread such as yourself won't be going through 16 pages of them to read them and get different POV's. If I was prone to conspiracies, one could say "job accomplished" .
Self-censorship: We all do it everyday when we hold back from saying something that our brain felt was best to "pause", whether it's using foul language in a work environment, reading a porn mag on the bus, etc. There is a huge difference.

I think it's more about accommodating other member's requests and whether you're willing to do that or not. If someone had said to me,"My kid reads MAACA over my shoulder sometimes and your Santa's dead avatar could upset him." I would immediately change it. Hell, it's an avatar. In the scheme of things it is unimportant what my avatar is. It's a form of personal expression, and given some objection I would exercise some good will and limit that expression in a public forum.
There's no question that the avatars in question are meant to provoke a sexual response. The people behind the avatars are not their avatars. Whether people allow pinballs which have large breasted women in their homes is irrelevant (in fact you don't have much choice). And at least Elvira's image is relevant to pinballs/vid. But I think it's more about getting with the times and exercising some political and social restraint than anything else. If you choose not to, so be it, it's not my board and I can take steps to eliminate avatars locally.
I think it's the animation and the potential for objectification of the female form that I find most irksome. Believe me, I laugh out loud when Clay parades "Candy" and company in the TOPs videos. But I could do without it.
However The Loafer's question had to do with getting an idea of how many users are pro and how many are con to the bouncing boobies avatars.
