I'm sure some of you have done your research on this!

Where's a decent-priced trailer rental place in Ottawa? I need a 4x8 or bigger, open cab. I don't really trust U-haul's equipment but if that's the only alternative... It also has to be pullable by a 4 cyl Tucson.

Cheers

Alex

I've rented from uHaul and the only time I had a problem, I hadn't checked the hook up. The guy hadn't tightened it enough and it came off. Other than that, no problems. Price is certainly right.

Geezus! Did it damage/kill anything/anyone? There's a reason W5 did a show on the Uhaul's shabby equipment! I rented a cube once to move from one house to another and some a** pulled a fishtail in front of me with my full load. I wanted to use the horn to warn him about coming into my lane, but guess what? No horn, so I had to brake suddenly and everything went flying in the back... I told myself never again with that company, but it seems like it's the only option!

Was it in good shape? How was the topper? Did he say how much he wanted for it?

Nope nothing was damaged. It came off while I was on the highway. I felt the pull of the trailer going back and heard the bang. Fortunately it was chained to the van and I slowly pulled over. Reattached and continued on. Pinball wasn't damaged as I had it strapped down.

I agree their vans are crap and I have a story about that as well. I wouldn't touch their vans. But how bad can a trailer be? You have the opportunity to inspect it. I have found the trailers to be solid. Just double check the tires. Make sure they look good. I've rented Uhaul trailers many times with no real problems other than the one time I didn't double check to make sure it was well attached to the hitch.

The vans are expensive with the mileage as well.  I rented a 5 x 8 enclosed (better bet in this weather) from U-Haul with wieght properly distributed and everything folded and tied down, which was necessary for the number of machines and it worked very well.  The only problem was that some previous joker had obviously braked hard with untied stuff and it had unknowlingly punctured the front of the enclosure, so in the wet weather, my van tires sprayed water up into a small crack and wetted the interiour.  I reported it and got comp'd and the trailer went out for service (saw him write out the service order).  People return these knowing there is damage but won't report it,a nd all sorts of idiots rent them not knowing how to take care of or drive a trailer and go with unsecured, unbalanced loads.

Still, I will do it again.  Gotta make that trailer hitch pay for itself.

I hate stupid Uhaul

Every time I try and rent a trailer and I've done 4 seperate reservations, they tell me the closest pickup location for a trailer is an hour in the wrong direction that I'm traveling.

PITA every friggen time, I've stopped bothering even trying to rent from them.

I've rented U-Haul trailers several times  ( 5 or 6 ?).

No problems with the trailer, but their pick-up and drop-off service is TERRIBLE.
(huge line-ups, screwed-up reservations, etc.... )

I would never rent a truck from them, but for trailers, they're pretty much the only game in town,,,

Stittsville Trailers rents them.  More expensive ($35 for a 4x8 if I recall correctly) but if you really don't want to do U-Haul give them a call.

I've used u-haul trailers numerous times with no issues. The 5x9 with the ramp are very nice for hauling machines, and those are all newer trailers since it's a size they just started to carry. As for their trucks, I wouldn't rent one even with a gun put to my head. There are other options when it comes to trucks that are better. But you still need to do a walkaround yourself on any truck or trailer you rent. It takes all of 5 minutes to turn on all the lights and signals and walk around to make sure they are all working and check the wipers/washers and horn and make sure the doors and windows are working properly.

Just my two cents.

Just an observation...

When renting a trailer, consider the extra gas a larger trailer will require.

I use to rent 5 x 8 or 5 x 9   but these are higher than the back of my SUV
and add a significant wind-drag.

On my last trip, I rented a 4x8 which had a much lower height-profile
and the gas consumption was noticeably less.

For instance, when I drove to Quebec and back (1000km)
using a 5x8, I used up about 160L of gas.

On my last trip to T.O. ( about 1000Km) using a 4x8,
I only used about 110L.

A closed 4 x8 will fit two pins easily.

I have rented the U-haul 5x10 a few times and pulled it with santa fea no issues really shitty weather.
U-haul trailers are normally ok the vans and trucks are the ones fucked.
Now most trailers have the breaks on them so if it ditaches it will stops.
