I am not a tech-junkie, but this seems cool. Beats hauling a laptop. Most of what I use for work could be done on this.
But pardon my ignorance... why all the Apple-bashing? I never understood that. Is there a fundamental reason for it? I am not what you would call a tech-savvy person but I get by, and I personally never saw a problem with Apple products, other than seeing people get the shakes when they don't have access to their I-Phone, like a bunch of junkies.
.The Apple stocks dropped huge right after the grand unveiling.

You beat me to the punch:
"Shares in Apple rose $1.84, or less than 1 percent, to $207.78 in afternoon trading Wednesday. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company's shares have more than doubled over the past year, partly on anticipation of the tablet computer."
It's because your not tech savy that you don't see the problem with Apple. Apple is great for the layman, but for anyone who knows what they are doing it's terrible. It has it's place int he graphics world, but for an everyday machine it's crap IMO. The inflexibility of the platform, the prepriatorey (sp?) hardware/software and the inability to do any of your own repairs/upgrades is why I stay away from everything apple.
A buddy of mine reaffirmed why I hate apple for me the other day for me. He brought over his apple network router that couldn't connect to the internet. We figure we would try and flash the firmware and see if that would fix the issue, problem was in apple's wonderful support the only way, and I mean ONLY way to get the update was to use their own update software and have the router automatically update thought the internet, it wouldn't let you just download a file. So we had the wonderful chicken and egg paradox, the router can't get on the internet and we need new firmware, but we have to be on the internet to update the firmware, and round and round you go with no help from apple.

"oversimplification" comes to mind when I think of Apple.. they prey on the stupid, and the stupid lap it up –– that's not to say they don't make good products, though (or to call anyone here "stupid").
I'll admit.. I own an iPod Touch Funny enough though, I bought it to browse the internet and watch movies, not to listen to music

It's human nature to bash the one at the top; just how it works, probably jealousy .
Yeah, the closed architecture gets on the nerve for techies but the average Joe doesn't care. They want a device that's easy to use, is functional, provides a service and looks great and if possible, make it small with lots of features . Apple seems to have a knack for that and because of that, they now have their fans. It's not always because people are sheep, sometimes we just want something cool. Nothin' wrong with that.
This device kind of goes contrary to that (it's larger) but given it's competing with the kindle (or whatever it's called) it seems to be that, plus much more (a full multimedia sweet) at an affordable price. They deserve credit; if poker nights keep going well, might pick one up

I hate everything to do with apple.
I agree. ITunes is brutal and a POS. Apple products are trendy and pricey. Apple software makes me like I have follow only their way of thinking and handcuffs you in doing anything else. Does stuff in the background and doesn't tell you. Did I also say it was pricey?
Apple products look nice and some items did change the industry(Iphone & iPod) but like I always say if you want to be look trendy while checking your email buy an Apple.

Exactly. Steve Jobs knows their strength:

The reason we’ve been able to create products like this is because we’ve tried to be at the intersection of technology and liberal arts. We make things that are easy to use, fun to use — they really fit the users.
I'm a nerd and cannot afford their crap (and I call it crap, because I cannot afford it ), but there's lot more art-savvy people out there that love what Apple promises.

One of the interesting elements of the comparison to the Kindle is last year Jobs was running around saying 40% of Americans read one or less books a year (weird that you'd create a product for that market)
"Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year," the real figure is closer to 27 percent, based on an August 2007 survey by Ipsos Public Affairs for The Associated Press (cited in The New York Times)".

Adam, you're being ridiculous. I'm as technically savvy as they come (I'm a linux developer) and I love most Apple products. I know they have their flaws but I think they're fantastic. I seriously could not imagine living without my iphone now. Sure, I could get the new Google Nexus (it looks sweet), but they're the ones following Apple's lead and doesn't appear that much better than my 2 year old iphone.
Disclaimer: I own a few shares in Apple (among other tech companies) and I'm pleased as a share holder by their performance today (up 1%).

This is a seriously good piece of technology and I'm not an Apple fanboy by any stretch of the imagination. I thought the iPod was a stupid waste of $$$. Seemed folks that bought them, bought them for bragging rights. The screen was too small to do anything useful.
The iPad is pretty cool, though. I can see it eliminating Netbooks and eReaders. The screen is bigger than a Netbook. It's going to perform all the features I normally do on my laptop and it will be more portable. Once the price comes down, it's the first Apple product I would seriously consider getting. I like it.

Even though it was typical misdirection (as a business man, you also don't want to promote your competitors product), it's also still a lot of books. There are 300 million Americans, and if 40% read one book a year, that's a market of 120 million books read per year. You can't ignore that market, nor the newsprint market that's trying to transform itself into an electronic medium.
I really do not know if this will be successful, but I don't see it bombing. I don't see Ipod type numbers but it doesn't have to be that successful to be successful.
Another reason for hating Apple? Open Source THEFT. We're not talking "Oops we used it and didn't share", they have flagrant disregard for open source licensing. Hell OSX may now be based on the MACH Kernel, but previous Apple OS' were not, they used a pretty plain BSD Kernel and nothing was shared, even though the majority of their work...wasn't even their work. Even now they're still thieves, just not to the same degree.
People have thought for how long that Microsoft was "Evil"? No, Apple has been the evil one all along, they just disguise it with queer little locked down gadgets that the average person buys becasue they're "Cool", and sell an OS for PC's (They're PCs FFS! Not Macs! Macs died when they dropped PPC arch) that's locked to hardware they decide you are allowed to use and pay 2x as much for had you bought a PC, for the exact same hardware.

Agree, but we all quickly forget that Linux and the kernels are all pirates of the official Unix. So Apple just continued the tradition of stealing....

There's no forgetting, most are open source and 100% of their code is freely available. The ones that aren't (ie; Red Hat) often have offshoots where their source is shared (see; Fedora). It's only stealing from the Open Source community, when you take what others create, modify it and give NOTHING back. *cough* Apple *cough*
-I'm not anti apple, I just think this product sucks, and will seriously effect Apple's shares on the global market...they are only inflated to this price because of the hype around the upcomming new apple product. Anyone remember the hype that preceded The Segway???
-Just because Apple hit homeruns with the iphone, and ipod, its flawed to argue that the ipad is going to be an automatic hit.... (homerun, hit...get it....pretty witty, eh?)
-If you're waiting for the price to drop....your going to be waiting a very very long time. Watch the promo video on apple.com. The Apple guy says that they are "specifically starting with a low price to get the product in the hands of everyone"
-I agree that this is much cooler then a netbook, but I dunno...I can get one of those for less then $200(on sale), and can spend the other $300 on other fun stuff like pinball and stocks in RIM
funny when people say apple steal from others, when in fact its the other way around...
best operating system in the world hands down! best concept, looks, no doubt! no viruses, no freezing (blue screen of death) most people say bad things about apple, thats because they never own one, or had any real experience with it! you can drive a lada until you try a porche. sure the ipad is a little expensive, its a gadget.
yep a like apple, was always on apple all my life and will never change for a half working windooooow...

Yeah, but this great open source OS called Linux came from a guy whose dream was to copy everything that Unix had to offer, but make it free. If I were a company that owned a lot of patented and protected intellectual property I would be pissed. Yet, in the software world the courts did not defend Unix.
I'm by no means an expert, but I just find it funny how Linux can openly claim to want to be the free Unix and have identical syntax and operation and was not stopped in the courts.
Yet in pinball there's many examples of patents protecting Bally, Williams and Stern IPR, with some wacky Australian guy sending cease & desist threats to hobbyists making unique parts for machines that are 10+ years old. I guess many examples of plagiarism, too...
I love Linux use it everyday @ home & work - free is good, but Linux did f-up a good company.
AT&T made Unix available to universities and commercial firms, as well as the United States government under licenses. The licenses included all source code including the machine-dependent parts of the kernel, which were written in PDP-11 assembly code. Copies of the annotated Unix kernel sources circulated widely in the late 1970s in the form of a much-copied book by John Lions of the University of New South Wales, the Lions' Commentary on UNIX 6th Edition, with Source Code, which led to considerable use of Unix as an educational example.
There's more to it than that, but Unix was never a closed source private project. It was started in spare time by some BL employees, and got backing from BL and AT&T in exchange for those employees implementing some of their work into other projects. It came about from a prior project, with the use of hardware from that project that was abandoned.
None of that original work, was patented by the companies that could have actually claimed ownership of it. It wound up spread around, modified and shared again. Hmmm sound familiar? BSD was born when AT&T decided Unix was commercially viable, and switched to a commercial license. At that point, prior "Open Source" code...was still Public Domain, and well....the rest is history.
Now now...I played 4 years of football in high school on the offensive line and I hide my inner nerd for the most part. I prefer the term "Geek"! I lack the glasses, pocket protector and lack of muscle mass to qualify for "Nerd".

hey thats just my opinion!
Really I guess you drank the kool aid(chugged it by the sound of things). Some people have to justify the Apple tax they paid. I guess there is no antivirus required for Apple OS since there are no viruses? I'm typing this on a Dell 10v that can run both windows and Mac OS (Hackintosh) so why is it always more for a Apple computer. I guess you forgot the batteries in IPods’ melting and Apple didn't do anything about it. My laptop makes me money and trust me I cannot do that with a Mac.
Everyone can spend their money any way they choose and that is alright, but Apple will not get any of mine just for their business practices
So I basically need a new computer... Apple or PC? Ahhh... the famous debate...
Well, you could do what I did. After all, an Apple computer is just a regular Intel box in a pretty case with terrible cooling, substandard motherboards and a big pricetag.
I run OS X on my homebrew box. The specs are:
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P MoBo Intel C2Q Q9550 Nvidia 8800GTX 640MB Western Digital Black Edition 1TB HDD x3 (and a few other random HDDs) LG DVD-RW Some random Linksys WiFi card. Acer AL2216W display x2 MacOS X 10.5.8/10.6.2
OS X flys on this pig. And it cost a lot less than an iMac spec'ed similarly at the time.

i guess we can talk all night long about whats wrong with apple and whats wrong with pcs (window vista... on and on) or what did microsoft copied from apple. i also make money with my mac. and i also can run windooow on my mac (mac was first running the other system with virtual pc more than 10 years ago) yes it wasn't nice from apple not to do anything about the ipod problem, same thing about what bill gates did with window's upgrade years ago! practices? like i said the list can go on and on... yes i have to agree with you apple is expensive, but like any other things if you dont have money, well, don't buy it...
i guess maybe because i always had a mac, thats why i like it, but i did work with pc, well i just don't like it. overall from the system to the layout, simplicity of the environment and all, thats why i like mac.

I'm no Apple fan, I do like their OS, but their hardware is substandard mess (imho). However, you should check your facts a little.
Psst...that's the Mach Kernel they really have no choice but to "share" their adaptations of, not exactly enough to simply "Roll your own OS X". You don't really, truly believe that everything they've got rolled into their OS...is shared, when it should be if it's been based on something else, do you? Their source shares are nothing more than "Tossing the dog a bone, to shut him up". I'm not saying they haven't come up with some of their own stuff, but they certainly have been stealing bits and pieces of others work and not giving credit by sharing what they've created with it or even acknowledge it (Of course not! That would be admitting they stole it). Fire up your Google engines...you'll find plenty of proof.

Well, you wouldn't have Aqua as that part of the OS is closed source, and yeah, you couldn't run OS X software, but you certainly could build the OS X kernel and run Gnome or KDE on top of it. Kind of what the OpenDarwin project did back in the day. All the IOKit stuff and GCC is there, plus basic hardware support stuff is available. If you needed support for any other hardware, you could just take the .kext's from an OS X install.
I mean, there'd be no advantage to say installing FreeBSD, but you could roll your own "OS X".

I showed my students (15yr olds) the promo-video for the Ipad and the results were mixed. Certainly no big/excited reactions...in fact after 5min of the 8min video they got bored.
Some of their comments :
"That's just an Ipod touch, but I cant fit it in my pocket, and I'd need bag to carry it in...no thanks"
"That would be cool to use on the bus, but I would get robbed for it"
How old are the students? This seems to be marketed towards adults so I don't doubt it's not a good fit (and it certainly is a debate if it's debatable for adults too!)

My students are 15 & 16 year olds...the group in society with the biggest disposable incomes (zombies to new technology, part-time jobs, live at home, no bills to pay, free education)...If apple isn't marketing this group, their got their heads up their you-know-whats

Their stock price cannot be affected by their insanely high profits during a recession, profits that beat forecasts? Oh that's right, tech companies aren't supposed to actually produce products, products that sell.
BTW, if you don't like their products, don't buy them, buy the shitty Chinese knock-offs instead.

I'm convinced that Apple goes out of its way to see how shitty they can make their products while still increasing their market share. I'm pretty sure Apple thinks their users are idiots that will take whatever abuse Apple hands them.
Backward compatibility? Screw that! Adherence to universal standards like VGA, DVI, HDMI and USB? That would cut into our sales of adapters! Service plan? We'll make them pay for it! Warranty? 90 days is enough, isn't it? Double the price tag of our competitors? Our fanboys will pay it because we're trendy!
It's easy to poop on a product before you can use it, but it remains to be seen if it'll be succesfull. Apple doesn't always have hits (Apple TV, iPod HiFi), but when they have a hit, watch out!

I dunno, it would work for me to be honest.
I have joked that i should get one and make the font massively huge and claim it is an MP3 for seniors with bad eyesight, but for my regular computer use, it would be good! Like when i am sitting on the couch and watching tv, and want to look up IMDB for where i have seen an actor/actress... For wheni am using a recipe from the interwebz, and don't want to get flour or spices on my laptop (My ipod touch works, but is hard to read) FOr surfing Maaca/cgcc in bed (Don't kid yourselves, wheni post someting at 11:00, i am naked... NAKED!!!! LIVE WITH IT!)
its a lot of money for something kinda limited, but to be honest, the one thing i wish my ipod touch had, was a bigger screen. This pretty much covers that! My ipod touch is almost never used as a music player.... more often to look something up online, surf kijiji, or play video games while my dog is outside peeing.
AND....
To all of us who were planning on touchscreen jukes, and wished you could build something small and wall mount it? VOILA! mount a dock with speakers on the wall, and you have a touchscreen juke, that friends can look up porn and check email on.
Depending on my finances at the time, i'll probably be getting one.
Maybe i'll wait for gen II... 64 gigs can be a little tight.... escpecially if i keep my porn collection there.
DAMMIT! can you imagine? when i was a kid having a couple of skin mags was sooo hard to hide from my mom! Just hide the file on your ipad, go into the bathroom and..... umm, research homework!

That does look interesting. and it might 'feel' more like a book if you were to use it as a Kindle. I like the design direction/'look' much more than Apple as well (not that the aesthetics are more important over function) Not unlike iPods, the iPad looks like it is trying to beef up its digital novel (iBooks?) subscription/downloads ... which is a good idea.

I'm predicting luke-warm reviews on the first version, with fixes and upgrades (ie. a USB port and a camera) coming one upgrade per hardware revision, to be released at LEAST in six-month intervals, thereby rendering all previous versions obsolete and disposable (but don't worry, Apple will gladly recycle your old one for you for free).

From all the reading I did I say FAIL. Just another product to channel you to their Apple store, since this will be the only avenue to get anything on this thing. It looks like they took the OS from the IPHONE and made the screen bigger. This isn't bleed edge stuff anymore just a cash grab.

Love the "facts" presented, though it has no bearing on the device itself.
"Your PC can take 2 minutes to power on". If my PC took 2 minutes to power on, I'd be taking it out in my back yard and shooting it...not even my laptop takes that long, and it's 3 years old!

Now now.. we all know that the amount of time it takes for your PC to boot is directly related to how much porn you surf on the internet

meh, wireless support tops out at g, 4 gb built in HD is kinda small and it takes 9 seconds to boot?!?!?! My ipod touch, which is just a little ipad bots faster than that!!
i can think of some uses for the ipad, but i won't be an early adopter. Of course with them pushing the idea that since i'll sync it to my itunes account, it can use all my prepurchased ipod apps, that would be nice.
I think i'll wait for v2 to hit, or a clone that has a SD port.
